However, there’s no straightforward way to set any audio file as your ringtone on an iPhone like you can do the same on Android .

Thankfully, a simple workaround can help you save the WhatsApp audio and set it as the ringtone on your iPhone.

What Types of Audio Files Can Be Set as a Ringtone

From voice notes to regular audio files like songs, you can set just about any audio file that you receive on WhatsApp as a ringtone. If you have received an audio file of a lengthy song, you can even choose a particular section and set it as a ringtone.

Before setting an audio file as a ringtone, you will first have to save the audio on your iPhone. You cannot set an audio file as a ringtone directly from WhatsApp. Here’s how to save an audio file that you receive onto your iPhone’s storage.

Saving the WhatsApp Audio Onto Your iPhone

Step 1: Launch WhatsApp app and open the chat where you’ve received the WhatsApp audio.

Step 2:  Tap and hold on to the audio file till you see additional options.

Step 3:  Tap on the Forward option.

Step 4:  The audio file will now be selected. Tap on the Share icon on the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Step 5:  You will now see the iOS share sheet pop-up on the screen. Select Save to Files in the list of options.

Step 6:  The Files app will now open and you can choose where you want to save the audio. Select On My iPhone.

Step 7 : You will now see a list of folders on your iPhone. You can choose any folder from here, but we’ll be saving the audio in the Downloads folder for ease.

Step 8: Tap on the folder you want to save the audio in and select the Save option in the top-right corner.

Your WhatsApp audio has now been saved on your iPhone.

Setting the WhatsApp Audio as Ringtone

Now that you have the audio file saved on your iPhone, here’s how you can set it as your ringtone.

Step 1:  You will need the GarageBand app that comes pre-installed on the iPhone for this method. In case you’ve uninstalled it from your iPhone, you can install it back from the App Store.

Get GarageBand app

Step 2:  Open the GarageBand app on your iPhone and tap on the ‘+’ icon in the top-right corner.

Step 3:  Choose any instrument from the list like Keyboard and tap on it.

Step 4: In the instrument pane, select the third icon from the top-left corner.

Step 5:  Now, tap on the loop icon in the top-right corner next to Settings.

Step 6:  You will now see some default track options. Ignore them and select the Files tab at the top.

Step 7:  Tap on ‘Browse items from the Files app’ at the bottom of the screen.

Step 8:  You should ideally see the WhatsApp audio you saved in the Recents section. If you don’t, navigate to the Browse tab and select the audio file from the location you had saved it.

Step 9:  Tap on the WhatsApp audio file you want to set as a ringtone.

The WhatsApp audio will now show up as a track on GarageBand.

Step 10: Tap and hold on to the recording and let go when you see the GarageBand interface. This is to import the track into GarageBand.

Step 11:  Select the triangular icon next to the record button to disable the metronome.

Step 12:  You can adjust the length of the audio by tapping on it and dragging the white handlebars on either side of the audio clip. Tap on the Play button at the top to listen to the portion of the audio.

Step 13:  Once you have finalized the audio clip, tap on the arrow in the top-left corner of the screen and select My Songs.

The audio clip will now be saved as a song on your iPhone.

Step 14:  Press and hold on to the song till you see additional options. Select Share.

Step 15:  Tap on the Ringtone option in the center.

Step 16:  You can rename the clip or select Export.

Wait for the process to complete.

Step 17:  When you see the Ringtone Export Successful dialog box, select Use sound as.

Step 18:  Select Standard Ringtone.

Congrats, you’ve finally set the WhatsApp audio as your iPhone ringtone.

Use Any WhatsApp Audio Clip as a Ringtone

While the process may seem tedious, you can use it to set any audio clip or voice note that you receive on WhatsApp as a ringtone on your iPhone. We wish the process was simpler, but the closed nature of iOS means you have to go through this method.

Since iOS 10, WhatsApp uses the same ringtone for calls as your iPhone for normal calls. So you change the ringtones for WhatsApp calls the same way you change the ringtones for iPhone calls. This also means that you can no longer distinguish between a normal call and a WhatsApp call by choosing different ringtones.

Change WhatsApp ringtone for notifications

To change the ringtone for incoming WhatsApp messages, first open the WhatsApp app and tap “Settings” in the lower right corner. Then go to “Notifications” and tap “Sound” below Message Notifications .

You can now choose from a list of different tones from the classic “Xylophone” to the discreet “Note” ringtone. In this view, you can also completely disable the ringtone for messages by choosing “None”. Tap “Save” in the top right corner to save the selected tone. In the Notifications section, you can also set your own tone for group notifications. Similarly, assigning a distinct Ringtone for all your Family members in WhatsApp can help in making sure that you do not miss important or emergency calls from your family members.

As mentioned above, the Custom Ringtone feature is not available in the iOS version of WhatsApp. However, you can still set custom ringtones for WhatsApp Contacts on iPhone using the iPhone Contacts App.

Tap See All in the corner of a sub-category's associated window to explore it further.

How Do I Put Custom Ringtones on My iPhone for Free?

You can convert songs you already have in iTunes into ringtones, but if you’re using a newer version of macOS (anything from 2019’s Catalina and up), you won’t have access to iTunes at all. Instead, you can use Music .

You must use the Music app on both your Mac to follow these steps, but you do not need to have a subscription to complete this process.

Open the Music app.

If the song or sound you want to use is already in your library, you can find it in one of the categories under Library on the left side of the screen.

If you want to use a file that isn’t loaded into your library yet, click File and then Import . Or press Command O .

Navigate to the file you want to add, select it, then click Open . You can also click on the play button on the file’s icon to listen to a preview to ensure it’s the one you want.

You’ll find the newly added file under Recently Added .

Click on the Options tab in the menu, then enter the times you want the clip to start and stop in their respective boxes. Be aware the total time for the clip cannot exceed 30 seconds.

Click OK to finalize your selection.

From the clip’s info page, click on the clip to select it, then at the top of the screen, click File > Convert > Create ACC Version .

The 30 second clip will appear on the list underneath the original clip.

Once created, you’ll want to follow steps 6 through 9 to restore the original clip to its proper length. Just make sure both the Start and Stop boxes are unchecked, and it should default back to normal when you click OK .

Right-click on the 30-second clip and select Show in Finder to find the actual file on your computer. It should be using a “.m4a” file extension.

Right-click the file and select Rename .

Give the file any name you want, but make sure to change the extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r” to make sure your iPhone will recognize it .

Connect your iPhone to your Mac using the necessary Lightning or USB cable, then in Music, select your iPhone and click Sync Settings .

On the General tab, make sure Manually manage music, movies, and TV shows is on and click Apply to finish.

Go back to the folder where the new clip .m4r file is, then drag and drop it into Music , making sure your iPhone is still connected to your computer, and it’s still selected in the Music app.

The new ringtone may not appear on your iPhone’s page in Music , so go into Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone to check.

The new ringtone should appear right at the top of your list. Tap it to set it as your new ringtone, and you’re done!

How Can I Put Ringtones on My iPhone Without iTunes or Music?

Provided you already have music files you want to use or have some in mind you want to download, it’s also possible to set them up as ringtones on your phone without using iTunes or Music . First, you’ll need to download or transfer the music files to your phone with the Files app to make it work.

You’ll need to download and install both the Garageband app and the Files app from the App Store on your iPhone to follow these steps.

Open Garageband and tap Audio Recorder .

Tap View (the icon looks like a small series of horizontal lines towards the top-left of the screen).

From the new screen, tap Loop (which looks like a small loop, close to the top-right corner of the screen).

From the Files tab, tap Browse items from the Files app .

Select the file you want to use, and you’ll be taken back to the Files tab, where the selected file will now appear.

Tap and hold the song for a second or two, and it will import to Garageband .

Tap and drag along the lined bar at the top of the screen (beneath the Play and Record buttons) to set the starting point for your audio clip. Be aware the final audio clip you use for a ringtone will have to be less than 30 seconds long.

Double-tap the audio clip, tap Split and drag the scissor icon down to cut the clip at the line.

Double-tap the portion of the clip you don’t want to use and select Delete .

Tap the down arrow in the top-left corner of the screen and select My Songs .

Your clip will appear on the new screen, most likely with the title “My Song.”

Tap and hold the clip to pull up a menu, then scroll down and select Share .

Select Ringtone , then Continue .

Tap Export in the top-right corner of the screen, and Garageband will begin exporting the new ringtone for you.

Tap OK to continue, or Use sound as if you want to use the new ringtone for something specific.

If you choose the latter, you can set the new clip as a Standard Ringtone , a Standard Text Tone , or Assign to contact .

Otherwise, you can go into your iPhone’s Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone to set your new ringtone manually. It will appear in the list alphabetically as “My Song” if you didn’t change the name or under whatever name you decided to give it in Garageband .

Change ringtone on WhatsApp? That’s how you do it on your iPhone

Nowadays we call more often via WhatsApp than via your subscription. It therefore makes sense that you want to personalize the app, such as setting a different ringtone. But how do you do that exactly? We explain it to you.

Of course you can call via your subscription, but you often only have a limited number of minutes. It is then understandable that you choose to make calls via the internet, especially if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. WhatsApp is an ideal app for this. But how exactly do you set a ringtone?

Set a ringtone on WhatsApp for iPhone

Unfortunately, it is not possible on the iPhone to choose a ringtone other than the ringtones available in WhatsApp itself. You can choose from the selection of the app itself. You can also set a different ringtone for each contact. You do this as follows:

• Open the chat with the person whose ringtone you want to change.
• Tap the name of the contact you want to set a custom ringtone for.
• Go to ‘Wallpaper and Sound’.
• Tap “Notification Sound.”

In that WhatsApp menu you have several options to adjust the notification sounds per person. You can do this for a notification when you receive a new message, but also when someone calls you. You can choose from seven different ringtones.

Set a ringtone for regular calls

It is possible on an iPhone to set your own ringtone for telephone calls. There are two different options for this. The first is to buy one from the iTunes Store.

Most ringtones in the iTunes Store will cost you $1.29. You can also buy separate notification sounds for when you receive a message, for example. Unfortunately, that does not apply to WhatsApp.

Not on WhatsApp, but your other ringtone

In addition, you can create your own ringtones for your iPhone via GarageBand. There you create a new project and click on the Audio Recorder . Then tap the button with the staggered bars and then the loop on the right side of the screen. Here you can get a song from your Files or Music .

Then swipe the song on the open track and select which part you want as a ringtone. You then need to cut this out and assemble it. Then click My numbers and save your created project. Now press a little longer on the file and then select Part . You should now see ‘Ringtone’ appear. There you export it to your ringtones. It will then be among your ringtones and you can use it immediately. Unfortunately not on WhatsApp.

Apple no longer offers iTunes on Macs starting with macOS Catalina, so you'll need to use an alternative method to get custom ringtones onto your iPhone on newer versions of macOS . The instructions in this article still work if you're using iTunes on Windows or if you have an older version of macOS that still has iTunes. Additionally, we had some issues with the version of iTunes downloaded from the Microsoft Store, but the version available for download on the Apple website worked perfectly. If you encounter problems, try installing the version downloaded from Apple.

Of course, you'll need a sound clip you want to convert and use as a ringtone for this. You probably already have some idea of what you want to use. if not, go ahead and find something you like. You can use absolutely any sound file you find.

Your ringtone file must be a maximum of 40 seconds long. iTunes will refuse to copy ringtones longer than 40 seconds to your phone.

If the file is long and you just want to use one part of it, you can cut it down to just the part you want using an audio editor. You can use any audio editor you like. We like the free and open-source Audacity audio editor for audio editing, but it's more complex than necessary for simple things like this — so we actually recommend a simple online tool like mp3cut.net . To use this website, click the "Open file" button and browse to the MP3 or other type of sound file you want to edit. It can also extract the sound from video files if you upload those.

Select the part of the audio file you want to use and click the "Save" button.

Download the edited clip to your PC by clicking "Save" again. This is the file you'll need to import into iTunes.

There's a good chance your sound file is in MP3 format. You'll need to convert it to AAC format to use it as a ringtone. (If your sound file is already in AAC format or has a .m4r extension, you can skip this part.)

First, add the sound file to iTunes and locate it in your library. You can do this by dragging and dropping the file directly into the iTunes library. Look under Library > Songs for the file afterward.

Select the sound file in iTunes and click File > Convert > Create AAC Version.

You'll end up with two copies of the same song file in your iTunes library: The original MP3 version and the new AAC version.

To keep track of which is which, right-click the headings in the library and enable the "Kind" column.

You'll see a new "Kind" column telling you which file is which. The "MPEG audio file" is the original MP3, while the "AAC audio file" is your new AAC file. You can right-click the MPEG audio file version (that's the MP3) and remove it from your library if you like.

You now have your ringtone file as an AAC file. However, you need to change its file extension so iTunes will recognize it as a ringtone file.

First, drag and drop the AAC file from the iTunes library to your Desktop or any other folder on your system.

You'll get the ringtone file as an AAC file with the .m4a file extension . If you don't see an extension after the file name, you'll need to enable file extensions . Right-click the file, click "rename" or hit the rename button , and change the file extension to .m4r. For example, if the file is named Song.m4a, change it to Song.m4r.

Finally, connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac with its included USB-to-Lightning cable — that's the same cable you use to charge your iPhone.

Some cheap cables may support charging but not data transfer. If you plug your iPhone into your PC and it starts to charge but nothing else happens, try a different cable.

Unlock your iPhone and tap the "Trust" option on its screen to confirm you want to trust your computer if you haven't previously connected your phone to iTunes on that PC or Mac. You'll be prompted to enter your PIN.

In iTunes, click the device icon that appears to the left of "Library" on the navigation bar.

Click the "Tones" section under On My Device in the left sidebar.

Drag and drop the .m4r ringtone file from its folder to the Tones section in iTunes.

If drag and drop doesn't work, use copy and paste instead. Select the ringtone file in File Explorer and press Ctrl+C, or right-click it and select copy. Next, click inside the Tones list inside iTunes and press Ctrl+V to paste it. Additionally, this part seems to break with the Microsoft Store version of iTunes. If you can't drag and drop or copy and paste the file into iTunes, try downloading and installing iTunes from Apple's website instead. Scroll about halfway down Apple's page until you see "Looking for other versions?" and then click "Windows." Click "Download" once the option appears.

iTunes will sync the ringtone to your phone and it will immediately appear under Tones here.

You can now grab your iPhone and head to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, then tap "Ringtone."

Then choose your custom ringtone. Any custom ringtones you've added will appear at the top of the list, and all of the default ringtones will be listed below the small line.

You can also assign that ringtone to a specific contact , so you know who's calling just by the sound.

To remove ringtones, reconnect your phone to iTunes and head back to the On My Device > Tones section. Right-click a tone and select "Delete from Library" to remove it from your device.

If you're not short on space, there isn't any real need to delete the ringtones you add. You can have as many as you'd like!

What to do if you can’t receive phone calls on your iPhone

Unable to receive phone calls on your iPhone? In this troubleshooting guide, we share all the possible solutions to fix this issue.

Note: The solutions listed here will only help if you are not receiving calls at all. In case the call comes in, but you don’t hear the ringtone , we have a separate tutorial addressing that.

1. Toggle Airplane mode On and Off

This is the first thing you should do when facing phone calls or cellular data problems.

Open Control Center, tap the Airplane icon , wait for 15 seconds, and  tap it again . Your phone will reconnect to cellular services, and now you should be able to receive phone calls.

2. Make sure you have cellular coverage

Look at the signal bar on the top of your iPhone, and if there are none, go outside your room or closed area, and hopefully, your phone will latch on to a signal.

Running a manual network selection can also help. To do that, go to Settings  >  Cellular  >  Network Selection  and turn off  Automatic  to force your iPhone to do a signal search. Next, tap your carrier’s name when and if it appears.

3. Restart your iPhone

This is an essential solution if your iPhone is not receiving phone calls. Just turn it off, wait a minute, and power it back on to resolve the issue.

4. Check your mobile data plan

If you have a cellular signal but still can’t receive calls, it may be because your carrier has suspended outgoing and incoming calls on your SIM card as you have not paid your postpaid bill, or your prepaid recharge has expired.

Use your carrier’s app or the usual special code you use to check your plan’s remaining balance and validity.

5. Deactivate Call Forwarding

You or someone with access to your iPhone may have switched on Call Forwarding and forgot about it, which results in incoming calls on your number going to another line.

Head over to  iPhone Settings  >  Phone  >  Call Forwarding  and make sure it’s turned off.

6. Check your block list

Do you recall blocking an annoying number or friend ? If that’s the case, you won’t receive phone calls, FaceTime calls, emails, or texts from them.

To be sure, head over to  iPhone Settings  >  Phone  >  Blocked Contacts  and see if their number or name is listed here . If it is, swipe left on their entry and tap  Unblock . Now, you will receive incoming calls when this person tries to reach you.

7. Turn off Silence Unknown Callers

If enabled, your iPhone can automatically silence all calls from numbers that are not saved to your contact . You won’t receive incoming call alerts for such unknown calls. If you accidentally enabled this, you may miss calls from people like the delivery guys or customer care.

To change this, go to  iPhone Settings  >  Phone  >  Silence Unknown Callers  and turn it off.

8. Deactivate third-party spam call management apps like Truecaller

Do you use Truecaller or a similar call screening app on your iPhone? In some cases, this may lead to missing incoming phone calls. You just won’t see the call on your phone screen, but it will appear as a missed call notification on the Lock Screen and in the Recents section of the iOS Phone app.

To fix this, go to  iPhone Settings  >  Phone  >  Call Blocking & Identification and turn off all the switches for Truecaller or other apps you see here. After this, you will not miss incoming calls, especially from unknown people on your iPhone.

9. Turn off Wi-Fi Calling

On some occasions, Wi-Fi Calling , which is meant to help when your cellular signal is low, may lead to call failures. Go to iPhone Settings  >  Phone  >  Wi-Fi Calling  and turn it off.

10. Connect to cellular data or Wi-Fi for VoIP calls

If you’re not receiving calls on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Skype, or other VoIP apps, ensure your iPhone is connected to cellular data or Wi-Fi.

11. Update third-party calling apps

You may also miss calls because of bugs if the app has not been updated in a long time. So, head over to the App Store and install the latest version .

12. Try turning off the second SIM line

Do you use two or more SIM cards on your iPhone and fail to receive calls on one of the lines?

Head over to  iPhone Settings  >  Cellular  >  pick the other SIM card  and toggle off the switch for “ Turn On This Line .” After this, see if you can receive incoming phone calls on the remaining active SIM.

13. Check the news to see if call services are temporarily restricted in your area

Depending on the country you live in, local authorities may temporarily suspend cellular services entirely or just allow SMS texts and not phone calls or internet.

14. Check carrier’s downtime

On rare occasions, your local cell tower may go offline, or the carrier may face a major outage. Check the news and social media platforms like Twitter, or contact customer support to learn more about this.

15. Reseat the physical SIM card

If your iPhone uses a physical SIM card, eject it, wipe it carefully with a soft cloth, and reinsert it. Now, try making a call and see if it has done the trick.

Tip:  You can also use this SIM on another phone and see if it works.

16. Update your iPhone

Incoming calls may not work because of bugs in iOS. Go to Settings  >  General  >  Software Update  and install the latest version of the operating system available for your iPhone.

17. Reset all network settings

Lastly, this is a very important solution that you should follow if all the above tips have failed to work for you. After you reset your iPhone network settings , it should fix most issues related to carrier phone calls, texts, and mobile data.
