A business administration has a range of possible career paths, including accounting, finance, human resources management, marketing, public relations, consulting and technology.

Business administration majors study a wide range of topics related to work in corporate settings. The major typically includes coursework in management, analytics, accounting, finance, operations, marketing and human resources. Business administration is a highly flexible major that allows students to specialize their studies as they go along.

What Is a Business Administration/Management Major?

Business administration and business management degrees prepare students for jobs, and potentially graduate study, in the business world, particularly at the managerial level. You can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of how companies set goals, implement processes, track progress, manage their people and keep their books.

While most businesspeople ultimately specialize in one particular industry or aspect of their trade, a degree in business administration provides graduates with a wide base of knowledge that forms a solid foundation. Many colleges facilitate hands-on experience opportunities – like internships or projects for real-world clients – which also help students learn more about their own interests during their undergraduate program.

What’s the Difference Between a Business Administration and an Accounting Major?

Students considering a business administration major may also be considering a major in accounting . Both majors focus on aspects of business, but accounting is a more specialized degree. It's a good fit if you're drawn to the financial side of running a business. If you're more interested in general management and corporate strategy, a business administration major might be a better fit.

Common Coursework Business Administration/Management Majors Can Expect

Because business administration is an intentionally broad major, course offerings may vary significantly from one college to another, and from one specialization to another even within the same school. If you're receiving a liberal arts degree, you'll have general education requirements in addition to your specialized business classes.

Core Coursework

Business administration majors can expect to enroll in courses that provide the basics of corporate operations in both theory and practice, including:

  • Accounting.
  • Finance and economics.
  • Management and operations, including leadership and project management.
  • Organizational behavior.
  • Marketing and communication.
  • Business ethics.
  • Business law.
  • Information systems.
  • Human resources.
  • Strategy and strategic management.

Concentrations

Business administration programs often provide the opportunity for students to specialize in a specific subfield by taking additional coursework in that area. Typical options include:

  • Management.
  • Entrepreneurship.

Other possible concentrations include accounting, international business, project management and supply chain management. Some schools also offer specializations in specific fields of business, such as real estate or health care.

How Long Does it Take to Complete a Business Management Degree?

While specific requirements vary among schools, full-time students typically are able to complete a bachelor's degree in business administration in four years, earning a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students who transfer credits at the time of enrollment may be able to graduate faster.

Is Business Administration a Good Major for Me?

Students who do well as business administration majors typically thrive in team-oriented work settings and have a sharp eye for analysis. Since business administration coursework is so wide-ranging, it can also help you determine where your particular skills and interests lie.

That said, it's possible to start your career with a variety of degrees. If you do have a strong interest elsewhere, consider choosing a different major and minoring in business administration to add some business skills to another course of study.

What Can I Do With a Business Administration/Management Major?

Graduates with a degree in business administration can be good candidates for management-track positions at a wide range of employers. They typically apply for entry-level positions in the department they choose to pursue, working their way up to higher-level management positions within that area or even eventually to senior-level management roles.

Most industries have some business component, so you may choose to focus on a particular sector that piques your interest. Below are five common jobs sought by business administration degree-holders. While you likely won’t attain a management-level position straight out of college, a business administration degree will provide you with the skills to become qualified for one with the right amount of post-college experience.

Data sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A bachelor's degree in business administration is also a step toward further training and credentials, including graduate degrees such as a master's of business administration (MBA) . Many businesspeople also pursue professional certifications, which can demonstrate deep knowledge in a particular area and can bolster a resume. These include Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) and Project Management Professional (PMP), as well as certifications on specific platforms such as Salesforce.

What Business Administration Majors Say

"Since my college degree is very versatile, I can take on any job — besides the jobs that have specific requirements for schooling — in the future. My college coursework has helped me prepare tremendously for any real-world professional experience as the classes I have taken have taught me many soft skills as well as different technical skills for my career after college." - Maci Arjes, University of Iowa Tippie College of Business, Class of 2024
"Last semester, I participated in Questrom Core which is a semester-long team-based core project, integrating coursework across finance, operations management, marketing, and data analytics. This is a team project that requires developing a comprehensive new product or business service plan, and one of the end results is a formal presentation for the project. As challenging as this project was, it served a great purpose in equipping my teammates and I with the skills to solve problems, make pitches, work together creatively and bring different perspectives to the table. I think this helps prepare us for the real world." - Shazaib Khan, Boston University Questrom School of Business, Class of 2024
"My biggest piece of advice is that you don’t need to know what career path you want to pursue as soon as you step on campus. As you take classes in the business administration major, you’re able to explore career paths and subjects. Make sure to make the most of these introductory classes to talk with your professors about your interests, their experiences, and the topics they cover. Further, make sure to open yourself up to experiences outside the Business Administration major as most colleges like UT Austin offer a ton of unique classes through different colleges." - Scott Fonseka, University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business, Class of 2024
"I was able to participate in a competition for business students from 30 different universities: we had to create a multifaceted environmental justice toolkit. That was the exact experience where I saw most of the business administration content applicable, extracting information and being able to apply it in a real-world company. Honestly, I think this is a major that you can't go wrong with. It's applicable in pretty much any field of work just because it's so broad, and there are so many different ways that you can get into concentrations like sports business or marketing. It's just such a diverse major." - Lorena Garcia, University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business, Class of 2024

Upon completing this bachelor's degree, you'll have earned vital competencies that can be applied to your personal and professional life, including communications and critical thinking skills as well as economics, finance and organizational leadership.

The sample academic plans of study below have been created by the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program faculty and are constructed with prerequisites and co-requisites in mind. You will work with your Success Coach on a personalized academic plan that works for you.

  • These sample plans offer suggested sequences, depending on one’s desired pace, and are intended to assist students in developing their own academic plans.
  • These plans reflect the program coursework only, and do not necessarily reflect any general education requirements, electives, or certificate courses a student may choose to add.

How to use this page:

  • Select your desired academic plan (note: you may scroll horizontally to see more options depending on the size of your screen)
  • Review the recommended courses, and the total credits, for each of the numbered subscription periods.

How much time will it take me to complete my coursework?

One credit hour is equivalent to 42-45 hours of work. This is about 3-4 hours per week for a 12 week subscription period. The amount of work required for a credit hour is federally defined. Your courses will all have suggested pacing plans so you can see how the faculty recommend pacing individual courses.

So for example, if you think you could commit to, say, 20 hours a week (which is less than 3 hours a day), you can reasonably expect to finish 6 credit hours in a subscription period.  As a competency-based program , there may be some courses you can move faster through, and other courses that take you longer, but on average you can expect that your coursework will typically land in that standard range. Use our time management calculator to help determine the time you have in your schedule for schoolwork.

How long might it take me to finish my degree?

There are two factors here: Once you determine how much time you have available in your schedule, and consider your experience level in a course’s subject area , you will have a pretty good sense of how many credits you can complete in a subscription period. Then, when you review your transfer credit report with your Success Coach, you will also know how many total credits you need to finish your degree. Dividing your total number of credits needed by your expected ‘credits per subscription period’ will give you an estimate of how many subscription periods you need to graduate.

The UW Flexible Option is flexible, but it also is affordable. For example, if you choose to finish your degree with the 8 subscription period sample plan, your total cost will be $18,000. The national average tuition for that same two year period of time is $32,636**. You can earn your degree for considerably less total tuition than the average student nationwide will pay.

Let’s look at an example. Laura has 65 credits to complete the degree after reviewing her credit evaluation. She has determined that she has time for, on average, about 6 credits per subscription period based on her schedule and experience. That means, to finish her degree she’ll need approximately 10 subscription periods. Laura then multiplies that number by our flat rate tuition to arrive at her total cost to her degree. And remember, with the Flex Tuition Guarantee, your tuition will not increase once you start , making it easier to plan for the future.

6 Subscription Periods

8 subscription periods, 9 subscription periods, 10 subscription periods, 11 subscription periods, 12 subscription periods.

*The 6 subscription period plan assumes a student has some transfer credit applied in their business major coursework in the following areas: Microeconomics (BAEF 100x &101x); Macroeconomics (BAEF 110x & 111x); Financial Accounting (BAEF 200x & 201x); Managerial Accounting (BAEF 210x, 211x, & 212x); Business Algebra (BAMA 100x, 101x, & 102x); and Business Statistics (BAMA 300x & 301x).

**Data from the most recent available National Center for Education Statistics digest . Multiplied the national average annual tuition and fees, $16,318, for two years to produce the equivalent educational cost of two years of study in the UW Flexible Option.

Note, some courses have a prerequisite. A prerequisite is a course that a student must master before enrolling in the more advanced course. Students may add an advanced course during the same subscription period for which the prerequisite is being satisfied; however, students will not be or granted permission to register for the advanced course until the prerequisite has been met.

Many cancer drugs remain unproven 5 years after accelerated approval, a study finds

Carla K. Johnson

Associated Press

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s accelerated approval program is meant to give patients early access to promising drugs. But how often do these drugs actually improve or extend patients’ lives?

In a new study, researchers found that most cancer drugs granted accelerated approval do not demonstrate such benefits within five years.

Recommended Videos

“Five years after the initial accelerated approval, you should have a definitive answer,” said Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a cancer specialist and bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the research. “Thousands of people are getting those drugs. That seems a mistake if we don’t know whether they work or not."

The program was created in 1992 to speed access to HIV drugs. Today, 85% of accelerated approvals go to cancer drugs.

It allows the FDA to grant early approval to drugs that show promising initial results for treating debilitating or fatal diseases. In exchange, drug companies are expected to do rigorous testing and produce better evidence before gaining full approval.

Patients get access to drugs earlier, but the tradeoff means some of the medications don’t pan out. It's up to the FDA or the drugmaker to withdraw disappointing drugs, and sometimes the FDA has decided that less definitive evidence is good enough for a full approval.

The new study found that between 2013 and 2017, there were 46 cancer drugs granted accelerated approval. Of those, 63% were converted to regular approval even though only 43% demonstrated a clinical benefit in confirmatory trials.

The research was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and discussed at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in San Diego on Sunday.

It's unclear how much cancer patients understand about drugs with accelerated approval, said study co-author Dr. Edward Cliff of Harvard Medical School.

“We raise the question: Is that uncertainty being conveyed to patients?” Cliff said.

Drugs that got accelerated approval may be the only option for patients with rare or advanced cancers, said Dr. Jennifer Litton of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, who was not involved in the study.

It’s important for doctors to carefully explain the evidence, Litton said.

“It might be shrinking of tumor. It might be how long the tumor stays stable,” Litton said. “You can provide the data you have, but you shouldn’t overpromise.”

Congress recently updated the program, giving the FDA more authority and streamlining the process for withdrawing drugs when companies don’t meet their commitments.

The changes allow the agency “to withdraw approval for a drug approved under accelerated approval, when appropriate, more quickly,” FDA spokesperson Cherie Duvall-Jones wrote in an email. The FDA can now require that a confirmatory trial be underway when it grants preliminary approval, which speeds up the process of verifying whether a drug works, she said.

25 million student loan borrowers could see their balances shrink under Biden's new forgiveness plan

By kamaron mcnair,cnbc • published april 8, 2024 • updated on april 8, 2024 at 11:54 am.

President Joe Biden and his administration are moving forward with plans to provide student debt relief to as many people as possible.

The administration announced Monday the details of its new plan to reduce student debt balances for millions of borrowers. The proposed regulations — which were drafted as part of the months-long negotiated rulemaking process — feature several different ways for borrowers to see their debt balances reduced, if not eliminated entirely.

The provisions of the plan include forgiving excessive interest that has accrued, discharging balances that have been in repayment for 20 years or more and relief for borrowers who attended now-closed or insolvent institutions.

"[The] plan is focused on the reasons that people are struggling with their student loan debt," James Kvaal, Under Secretary of Education, told CNBC Make It.

"People who are upside down on their student loans because interest has racked up faster than they could pay it, people who have been making payments on their loans for decades and still owe those loans — it's a sign of how aggressive the President is [being] in tackling the student loan crisis," he said.

The relief provisions will soon be open for a public comment period where the administration will consider revisions to its proposal before it goes into effect. Some provisions are expected to roll out as early as this fall, the administration said.

As with Biden's previous student debt forgiveness proposals, it's possible this plan will come under legal scrutiny if challenged by opponents. But this plan differs from his previous action by using a different legal authority — the Higher Education Act — and narrowing the scope of borrowers eligible for relief.

In the event this plan is enacted and a future presidential administration wanted to repeal it, it would need to go through the same lengthy rulemaking process, Kvaal said.

Here's the relief borrowers may expect to see in the coming months.

Up to $20,000 of accrued interest forgiven

Interest accrues daily on student loans and some borrowers have interest rates as high as 8%. As a result, many borrowers wind up with balances higher than what they initially took out for school, despite making regular payments.

Biden's plan aims to address that "runaway interest" by canceling up to $20,000 of the amount a borrower's balance has grown due to unpaid interest after entering repayment. Single borrowers who earn $120,000 or less and married borrowers earning $240,000 or less who enroll in an income-driven repayment plan would be eligible to have their entire excess interest balances discharged, the administration said.

Some 25 million borrowers stand to benefit from their interest balances being reduced if the plan goes into effect as proposed. An estimated 23 million of those borrowers will have their entire balance growth forgiven, according to the administration.

Automatic loan discharge for forgiveness-eligible borrowers

The Biden administration has canceled debt for over 1 million borrowers through existing forgiveness programs, including Public Service Loan Forgiveness , income-driven repayment and closed school loan discharges.

The administration estimates another 2 million borrowers are eligible to have their debt forgiven under these programs, but have not yet applied .

The new plan will allow the administration to use available data to identify and automatically clear balances for these borrowers as they are eligible, without borrower action.

Debt forgiveness for long-term borrowers

Another 2 million borrowers could benefit from a provision that will clear debt balances that are at least 20 years old for undergraduate borrowers and 25 years for graduate borrowers. It will apply to undergraduate borrowers with direct loans or direct consolidation loans who entered repayment on or before July 1, 2005, and graduate school borrowers who entered repayment on or before or July 1, 2000.

Currently, borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education plan or other income-driven repayment plans are eligible to have their remaining balances discharged after 20 or 25 years, but the new regulation would eliminate the IDR requirement.

Relief for attendees of 'low-financial-value' programs

The Biden administration has made a concerted effort to "hold colleges accountable when they leave students with mountains of debt and without good job prospects," it said in its statement.

As such, the new plan would waive loans for borrowers who attended institutions or programs the administration identifies as "low-financial-value."

That includes schools that have lost eligibility to receive federal student aid or were denied recertification due to cheating or taking advantage of students, as well as programs that have since closed or have a history of leaving students with high debt loads and poor earnings outcomes.

Help for borrowers facing financial hardship

The administration says it is committed to pursuing a "specific action" for student loan borrowers experiencing a variety of financial hardships , although it's not yet clear who may receive relief and to what degree their balances will be reduced.

"This could include delivering automatic forgiveness to borrowers predicted to be likely to default on their loans, or through an individualized applications where borrowers could detail their financial hardship that is preventing them from being able to fully pay back their loan, such as a child care or medical expense," the administration said in its statement.
