How to Finish Your Homework
Last Updated: July 7, 2023 Fact Checked

While studying can differ for different age groups, many of the things that get in the way are the same. Whether it's your environment or time management skills, it easy for things to discourage you from finishing your homework. With a little organization and help, your homework can become approachable.
Managing Your Time
- For instance, try setting aside a time you know you can work well such as an hour or 2 before dinner, or if you're a night owl, after dinner.
- Work in hour blocks, with 50 minutes spent studying and 10 minutes spent taking a break.
- It can also be helpful to move around when you are taking your break, especially if you are working at a screen. Go for a walk outside to get your blood circulating and enjoy some fresh air.
- You might also want to eat a healthy snack on your break to improve your focus. Avoid junk food and choose something like a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, veggies, or a small portion of cottage cheese.
- Identify which assignments are worth the most points for each class. Most likely these will take the longest to complete. [5] X Research source
- Consider how long you have to do each project, and if possible, see when the assignment is introduced. Oftentimes, primary and secondary school classes do not have syllabi, so it might be harder to plan out an entire term, but if you are in college, you will most likely have a syllabus with at least a partial course schedule. Knowing how long you have to complete an assignment will help you prioritize which assignments to do first. You can also ask the teacher how long you have to complete an assignment. [6] X Research source
- Use highlighters or stickers to mark which assignments are most important.
- If you're using an online or mobile schedule, create alerts or notifications for the projects and any time-sensitive steps for those projects.
- Don't let a big project overshadow the smaller assignments you need to complete!
- Assignment outlines can help you visualize the necessary tasks to get the assignment done.
Creating a Productive Work Environment
- A desk or table would be a better location than a couch or a bed.
- Turn your phone off or on silent (not vibrate). It might be best to put the phone out of sight, or in another room while you work, as the temptation to text or get on social media can be as much of a distraction as actually using social media.
- Use an app that blocks social media. There are plenty of applications out there that can help block social media and other distracting sites (such as shopping or gaming sites). [10] X Trustworthy Source Pew Research Center Nonpartisan thinktank conducting research and providing information on public opinion, demographic trends, and social trends Go to source
- Use a white noise app to block out noise.
- Use earplugs or noise-blocking earmuffs. [12] X Research source
- Work in a quiet place, such as a library or a home office, if you have one.
- Avoid listening to music while studying. Studies have shown that although listening to music while studying lowers overall performance, this does not affect everyone equally. [13] X Research source However listening to music before studying has been shown to improve performance on cognitive tasks. [14] X Research source
Using Your Resources
- If you're too afraid to ask a teacher during class, see if you can stay behind to ask your questions.
- First, contact your school to see if there are any after-school tutoring programs. While not all primary and secondary schools offer tutoring, a vast majority of universities do. If your school does not offer tutoring, they may know of other resources for you to contact.
- Then, contact your library to see if they offer any tutoring. [18] X Research source
- In some areas, there may also be free community tutoring programs. Contact your local community center for more information.
- There are plenty of private tutors out there as well, but they can be costly (ranging from $20 to $100 an hour). [19] X Research source You can find tutors online through a number of websites, such as Craigslist or Angie's list.
- If you need to work at a library after school, ask your parents or search the web to find your local library.

Tonight’s Homework review – Kiarostami-inspired snapshot of Iran’s wealth gap
Inequality is exposed in a series of interviews with schoolkids in a heartbreaking doc that echoes Abbas Kiarostami’s documentary Homework
A cheeky-faced boy of seven or eight is asked what he would wish for. “A big bike and a balloon that never bursts!” he replies with a huge grin, tickled with his answer. Another boy around the same age, more shabbily dressed and serious looking, is asked what life is about. He chews his bottom lip: “Life is something that is filled with difficulty.” This often heartbreaking, painful documentary from Ashkan Nejati and Mehran Nematollahi has a simple premise: interviewing Iranian schoolkids to camera about their lives, school, homework and hopes for the future.
It’s a sequel of sorts to godfather of modern Iranian cinema Abbas Kiarostami’s 1989 documentary Homework , which put the same questions to children growing up in the shadow of the Iran-Iraq war. The new film features plenty of kids-say-the-funniest-things moments. A boy is asked which countries he’d like to visit? “Europe, America … Neptune!” And there’s some commentary on the Iranian education system. But what lingers is the film’s devastating snapshot of the gap between rich and poor. One of the rich kids, a placid round-faced boy, brags about how well-off his dad is and how many cars they’ve got. The interviewer gently probes him: do you know what wealth is? “Yes, someone who has a lot of cash like my dad.” Do you know what poverty is? “No.”
If he ever watches the film he’ll find out. You can spot the poor kids instantly, and not just from their faded, many-times-washed sweaters and DIY haircuts. It’s their clenched body language and lined-before-their-time serious faces – a reminder that for them there’s no time for silliness or play. The headteacher of these boys explains that in calendar years, they are eight to 10, but maturity wise, more like 17 or 18. Most work afternoons and evenings, selling goods on the street or busking. One boy explains how he burns newspaper and rubs the soot on his face to look dirtier, more pitiable. Another pays his family’s rent and food. “I don’t buy toys. When you need to fill your belly, you don’t buy toys.” It’s not an easy watch, but these kids are invisible enough without the world shutting its eyes.

In Homework (1989), Abbas Kiarostami put questions to students at a public school: questions about homework, punishments, and dreams of the future. The result was a portrait of the generation that grew up during the Iran-Iraq war, trapped by uncertainty and a rigid upbringing. Now, some 30 years later, directors Ashkan Nejati and Mehran Nematollahi repeat Kiarostami’s questions and come to the conclusion that the school system and society itself have changed dramatically. The gulf between rich and poor has grown far wider, and that has become evident in the schools. Parents, many of whom are illiterate, are unable to help their young ones, or otherwise too busy with their careers to supervise homework. Any sense of interest or guidance is absent.

Here’s the thing about Vanderbilt: they offer really, really interesting classes . I’m talking Harry Potter classes and Meaning of Life classes– it’s great.
One of my personal favorites this semester is my Shakespeare on Film class. I know, I know- Shakespeare? I’ll admit that I love his work (a lot actually, considering I’m planning to major in English ), so this class was right up my alley. But even for the students who aren’t necessarily huge Shakespeare fans, this class adds the element of film, and who doesn’t love a good movie?
This year, we have read four of Shakespeare’s most well-known plays: Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, and Macbeth. We start off by reading and analyzing the play, not only in the context of Shakespeare’s world, but in ours as well. We question how the meaning of the play has perhaps changed over time and look at social implications of certain pieces of plot or specific lines and characterization. My professor, Dr. Chapman, challenged me to engage with the text in a new way and welcomed our own, unique interpretations. I’d read three of these plays before, but this class allowed me to see them in a whole new light and take away something new the second time around (one of the marks of great literature if you ask me).
After we read each play, we explored different film adaptations of the work, so yes, I got to watch movies for homework! How awesome is that? Some of the films followed a more traditional adaptation, but we watched a lot of modern takes on the classic Renaissance plays as well. We analyzed specific film techniques in order to read how the film interpreted the original text and understand what the movie thought the play was ultimately about.
As a result of taking this class, I have a new appreciation for film adaptations of literature. Before, I typically only liked faithful film adaptations that did not take out scenes or major themes and ideas, but now I realize that films create new levels of interpretation when they cut or change certain things. The appreciation and skills that this class has given me makes me even more excited to see the new Frankenstein movie and Macbeth movie this year!
Even more, our final for this class is to make a ten minute Macbeth film adaptation with a group, and I am so excited about it! We are going to have way too much fun, something you don’t necessarily think of when someone mentions “finals.” I’ve had the best time in this class, and I’m sad that it will have to end soon, but I know Vanderbilt has many more interesting classes waiting for me.
Also, as a side note, can I mention again how absolutely gorgeous Vanderbilt’s campus is? I talk about it way too often, but seriously, how could you not? After a pretty heavy downpour yesterday morning, Nashville delivered, and the campus trees turned a whole new kind of beautiful. Pictures won’t do it justice (come take a tour if you get the chance), but look at it!
As always, please send any questions you may have!
Stay well and be kind,

Hi! I would like to ask a question about the use of the present continous for the future. If we use the present continous for something we have decided to do, does it have to be something that is decided or made between me and other people ? For example : Can I say the sentence : "I am doing my homework tonight" to mean that I have decided to do my homework and it is not a plan or arrangement between me and other people ? So, I am saying the sentence to mean that I have decided to do my homework tonight, so, it is just me and it is not between me and other people, is it possible ? Many Thanks!

What would your homework have to do with other people anyway? The progressive aspect is 100% natural in answer to a question in this sort of context: Fancy coming round to mine to watch the football night? Can’t, sorry. I’m doing my homework.
