it is possible that some seats are blocked and will be released closer to departure or at the airport. It is possible if overbooked that there may be passenger(s) upgraded to C.ub World to free up seats in WT+ (It may not be you though)

At OLCI, 24 hrs before departure, that may change and you may then get to choose your seat. Otherwise, whichever seat you have been allocted will be revealed if you cannot see which one right now. For example, any bulk head bassinet seats not booked might become free then, if you like to sit there.

Although not 100% accurate.... I would suggest you set up a free account with expertflyer.com and you can search the cabin for available seats.

You may get an upgrade, but if the PE is full I suspect they will upgrade high tier frequent flyers first.

ps... if you want a regular to look at expertflyer just give the date and flight number and it can be quickly searched.

There is virtually no chance they would upgrade YOU they would give the upgrade firstly to someone who booked and paid for premium economy and would start by looking at loyalty status

I believe it is also possible, if the section is full, that you will be sent back to coach.

'What does this mean?' That you'll be able to select a seat at OLCI.

If you're travelling to CPT on 6 March then neither BA43 nor BA59 are heavily sold in WT+; both have plenty of seats available in WT as well, which means the chances of you moving to Club World are submicroscopic. The same holds for BA55 and BA57 to JNB on 6 March.

In my experience this has been accurate, as when I've bought tickets in (eg) fare bucket T the change in availability has shown at the EF site within five minutes of booking.

Why Can't I Select Certain Seats for My Flight?

It doesn't matter if you pay for your ticket with miles or cash or whether you choose to travel in economy, business or first class; the fact is that not every seat in the cabin is created equal. TPG reader Kathy wants to know why she's unable to select certain seats for an upcoming United flight ...

When looking at a seat map to select your seats, it can often be hard to tell the difference between seats that are blocked (i.e. you can't select them) and seats that have already been reserved by someone else. Still, there are several different reasons an airline might block seats, so let's take a look at a few of the more common ones.

While showing off a first class boarding pass is sure to make your friends jealous, flashing a picture of you in Seat 1A on a 15-hour flight may be even better. However, this isn't always possible, as a number of airlines have been known to reserve Seat 1A in first class for elite members of their respective loyalty programs. A good example of this would be Japan Airlines, which blocks the window seats 1A and 1K on its 777-300ERs until the day of departure. If you can't select them, don't worry; seats 2A and 2K will give you just as good of a flight experience .

Outside of seats in row 1 that sound prestigious (even if they're identical to the seats in row 2 behind them), airlines might also reserve specially configured seats. Qatar's Qsuite business class has absolutely set the gold standard for the industry, with incredibly well-designed suites with closing doors. If you're traveling in a group, you can even convert the center four seats into a quad layout and talk or work with your group. TPG got to try this out firsthand when he flew back from South Africa with his parents and TPG Reviews Editor Nick Ellis. While you can select some seats in the Qsuite cabin online, Qatar will only let you select a middle pair or quad if you're traveling with someone else. This means you'll have to call in to make the selection, but don't be dissuaded if you see all the middle seats "blocked" on ExpertFlyer.

Another reason you might see seats blocked off is that the airline needs them for a very important purpose — including rest spaces for pilots or other crew members. Larger jets like the 777, 747 and A380 have dedicated crew rest spaces tucked away in areas you'd likely never notice, but on medium-sized planes like the 757 and 767, airlines will often block off certain seats for crew rest during long-haul flights.

Finally, once the departure time of a flight approaches, most airlines will turn the seat assignment process over to the gate agent(s) in charge of the flight. You should be able to select seats during the online check-in process, but once you're within an hour or two of your flight, you may need to visit the gate if you're wanting to switch seats. This "gate control" allows agents to more easily accommodate confirmed passengers without a seat assignment, and it also enables them to clear standby passengers. However, if you ask nicely during a lull in the agent's pre-flight procedures, you may be able to score a better seat.

Bottom Line

There are a bunch of different reasons airlines might block seats, but in most cases you can simply pick the next available row and it won't matter all that much. If you truly have your eyes set on seat 1A, you can try calling the airline directly or checking in for your flight exactly 24 hours in advance when the hold might expire. If you're flying Qatar Qsuites with a friend (or three), make sure to call in and reserve your double bed or Quad office in the sky.

And when all else fails, check-in with the gate agent an hour or so before your flight. You never know when a polite request might improve your ride.

First time travelling with BA, Phx to London direct Oct 2024. I booked business class, Club World, but it looks like you still have to pay a huge seat upgrade to select your seats in advance? Anyone else experience that? Do the seat upgrade prices go down as you get closer to departure date? Since there are limited seats in this class (56) and half of those are single seats, I'm wondering if I have to suck it up and pay the high seat fees?

We've flown business class with BA several times, and we always pay the seat selection price (toward the back is less, but still not cheap.) I didn't see the prices drop as departure approached, and we didn't want to be "sleeping" apart.

You can book your seat for free 24 hours in advance. Which plane are you flying? The newly remodeled BA business class seats are all great- there's no first class seats. Check the configuration. Good luck.

We fly BA Premium Economy and always suck up paying the extra as often there are few seats left when we book and we want to sit together. It was suggested that seats further back tend to be less and that is true in PE, so might be your best bet. I’m nervous that waiting for the 24 hr free choice will put us in separate and middle seats. With Business the middle seat option goes away, but you could still be separated.

I’m flying business class on AA in Oct for the first time in my life and I booked my seat for no additional cost at the time of purchase. I assumed this was standard procedure for all airlines. So you’re saying for BA you pay for business class and then again depending on where you want to sit!? Do other airlines do this too?

And thus the reason my preferred airline to fly to London is Virgin Airlines. Premier Economy seat.

Next time, start by looking at BA flights as codeshares from the American Airlines site - you may be able to avoid the seat reservation fees.

It depends on what’s comfortable for you. You will have a seat in the class that you paid for. If where you sit is critical then that may come at a cost. If it doesn’t matter then a roll of the dice (waiting) will still be a win.

We waited for the free 24 hour seat selection on BA Premium Economy, London to Seattle flight last summer and the only seats left were up against the bathrooms. Pay for the seat selection!

BA's seat-selection fees were somewhat higher than everyone else's the last time I researched that question. I avoid BA for that reason (along with the crazy taxes and fees it charges on frequent-flyer tickets). I do often end up paying a seat-selection fee for trips to Europe on non-US airlines. It's annoying, but I want an aisle seat and am not willing to roll the dice on the long transatlantic flight. I'll take a chance on short intra-Europe hops.

I just booked an eastbound frequent-flier ticket on Austrian Air through the United website and was surprised and pleased to see that I could choose an ordinary coach seat at no cost.

@lyndash - on United Polaris, no. You get to select your seat for no additional fee.

It is not a “seat upgrade”, it is what British Airways charges for the “privileges” of choosing your own seat in advance of the check-in time. That is on top of the “supplemental” fee they charge if you book the flight with miles/Avios. And it does not go down (or up)as the flight date approaches. I believe have read, however, that the fee is slightly lower if you pay it as the time you make the booking, and pay in the same transaction.

The fee applies to Economy, PremiumEconomy, and Business Class seats, but it is much higher for Business Class than Economy. Within each cabin, the more desirable seats (usually those toward the front of the cabin) are more expensive.

As noted above, American Airlines does not charge for seat selection like this. I don’t know about United or Delta. If you do not want to pay extra, you can wait until Online Check-in (24 hours in advance of the flight) and move yourself to any available seat for free, if you do not like your assigned seat. In all the flights we have done on BA in Business Classs with our miles, I have never done that. I always pay so we can be sure of having the seats we want. (It is actually not guaranteed; they can move you for operational or other reasons, but once you have paid you can move yourself around if you want. Thus, if they change the airplane type and the seating is different, you can pick your seat for free on the new airplane. )

The new BA single row seats - against the windows- are fantastic. You have lots of room and storage. Even if you sat together in the new double seat configuration, you're still not very close, with the additional room, and conversation is hard. My advise is wait , and get your seat 24 hours out - free. In the new configuration, there really aren't any bad seats. Safe travels!

Thanks all, very helpful! Yes, I am used to American where I would pay for the premium Economy & seat selection as one fee. I could have booked thru American this time, but I really wanted to fly on the Airbus 350 with the new seat configuration. It sounds like it is well worth it. Thanks again! Cindy

When we fly BA business, we pay on the way over and take our chances on the way back. So far, we’ve always had seats together on the way back. It did seem that the fee was less this year than last, but I don’t know if it made a difference that we’re on a codeshare leg from LHR to Barcelona.

We have given up on British Airways for all the reasons mentioned above.

If you have status on another One World airline that allows you to book fee free reservations on that airline then you don’t have to pay on BA for seat selection. For example, I have status on Alaska and when I book on BA I don’t have to pay for seat selection.

We previously preferred BA Business but our last experience was not pleasant so the shine has worn off (it was just at that point when the airlines were adding additional flights coming off COVID peak. Cabin service was disorganized/haphazard, and food quality was very much lacking. I think they were using staff not sufficiently trained or experienced).

Our next flight (March 2024) is with KLM Business and no seat fee so that was great. We’ve used KLM/Air France Business before and were happy so likely will go back to them.

I can see worrying about sitting next to each other in economy or premium economy, but business? You are each going to be in your own little cubicles anyway.

I made my reservations for a round trip Seattle to London for the summer of 2022 with American Airlines, but the flight was operated by British Airways. I was in the main cabin -- not the absolute cheapest location. As a solo traveler I didn't need to worry about sitting near anyone in particular.

So I decided to wait till the 24 hour window for free seat selection. For the SEA-->LHR flight I got online within 5 minutes of the opening of that window and easily got my preferred aisle seat toward the front of the main cabin seats. When I did the same thing for the LHR-->SEA flight, I'd already been assigned a middle seat farther back in that section. There was more than one aisle seat still available and I easily switched the seat assignment to a great one for my return home.

Maybe I was just lucky, maybe preferring an aisle seat is a good thing or maybe getting online right after those 24 windows open improved my luck. The major point is that if you're assigned a seat you don't like and there are seats available that will work for you, it is possible to switch to one of those and have a guaranteed seat of your choice without paying extra.

BTW, I did pay extra for RT SEA<-->LHR seats on a trip in 2016. I did it out of some of the fear others have reported and because it was only $25 each flight. By the time I made my reservations for 2022, the price had escalated so much that I wasn't willing to pay that much in advance for my pick of a seat.

I don’t ever travel business but this is something that I am aware of people being annoyed about. On the other hand, regular travellers tend to have a favourite seat and are happy to pay in order to get it.

I have silver status with BA so get to choose my seat at the time of booking for free however, as others have noted, if you're flying in the new Club Suite seats (which you most likely will flying from PHX) then there really is little point in worrying about sitting together as you're so coccooned in your own 'suite' that it's actually quite difficult to converse with someone in the adjacent seat. I flew business from Phoenix with BA last December and whilst I was in a single window seat my two sons were sat together in the central aisle but because of the style of the seats they found that they could easily avoid interracting with each other.

We have those Club Suites on the later Seattle flight, on a 787. I agree that the seats are isolated from one another, even in the paired seats in the center. My husband and I have tried all combinations—-window seats one behind the other, window seat plus aisle seat directly across, and the pair in the center. None of them give us as much contact with one another as we are accustomed to, but we manage to survive. Since I end up passing half my food to my husband, we will take the center pair on the overnight flight from now on, so we don’t pass have to pass things across the aisle. But for the return flight in the daytime, I still want my window seat!

I just bought my first British Airways ticket (economy) and it looks like this is just their standard procedure - charge extra for the privilege of choosing a specific seat. It's bad enough that it's an added charge, but they wouldn't even display the cost until after I bought the ticket. This made comparing prices to other flights extremely challenging. I'm still shocked to hear that they also do this for business class. For those curious the cost of an Economy ticket seat (excluding exit rows/extra leg room seats) was:

$53-99 for PDX-LHR (one way) and $11-$27 for LHR-DUB.

I hope this doesn't become a trend. Unfortunately I couldn't find an equivalently convenient ticket with another airline, but I did spend extra time researching to try and not go with British Airways.

  • Plus:  Seat selection (opened 48 hours before departure), checked and carry-on baggage, and free changes on departure day
  • Plus Flex: Seat selection at any time, checked and carry-on baggage, and free changes or cancellations at any time (up to 1 hour before departure and fare differences may apply)

When flying Club Europe, you receive the following benefits:

British Airways’ baggage policy is pretty straightforward for checked-bag allowance. However, its excess baggage policy is less straightforward, with costs dependent on where you’re flying to and from.

Passengers can bring a personal item and 1 standard carry-on piece for free.

1 cabin bag is permitted for infant necessities required during the flight.

Stroller Check Policy

One collapsible stroller per child can be checked at the gate for free. If the stroller meets the maximum dimensions of 46 x 15 x 15 inches (117 x 38 x 38 cm) when collapsed, then the stroller can be checked at the gate and collected from the arrival gate immediately after disembarking.

Strollers that exceed these dimensions will need to be collected at the baggage carousel.

Passengers traveling with a child may also bring an additional item, such as a car seat or travel cot. Infants under 2 are permitted to bring 1 piece of checked luggage with the same size and weight restrictions as the ticketed adult’s bag. This does not apply to passengers traveling on a Basic Economy fare.

Checked Baggage Allowance

  • Size Restrictions : 35.5 x 29.5 x 16 inches (90 x 75 x 43 cm)
  • Up to 50 pounds (23 kg) for Euro Traveller and World Traveller Plus
  • Up to 70 pounds (32 kg) for Club World, Club Europe, and First Class fares

The number of checked bags that is permitted is based on the fare class you’re flying:

  • Basic Economy Euro Traveller, and World Traveller: 0 bags included; carry-on baggage only
  • Standard Euro Traveller and World Traveller:  1 bag included*
  • W orld Traveller Plus :  2 bags included
  • Club Europe and Club World:  2 bags included
  • First:  3 bags included

*2 checked bags included for economy flights to/from Ghana, Kenya, Japan, and Nigeria, connecting between India and U.S./Bermuda/Canada, and connecting from Saudi Arabia to U.S./Bermuda/Canada

Additional/Excess Baggage Fees

Excess baggage fees start at $46, depending on the departure airport, destination, cabin class, and where the fee is paid.

Booking With Call Center: $13

  • Free for British Airways Executive Club Gold Members booking a reward flight

Booking at Airport Ticket Office: $25

Change Fee:  Free (online); $25 (phone); $35 (at an airport ticket office). A ticket change fee may also be charged depending on your fare type. This ranges from $0 to $275 and will be displayed at the time of booking. Any fare differences would also be payable.

Change Fee for Reward Flight Bookings: $55 (free for British Airways Executive Club Gold Priority members)

Same-Day Change: Free for domestic short-haul flights; fees for international tickets depends on route and fare class. Same-day changes can be made up to 1 hour before departure. Unfortunately, same-day changes are not permitted if you have a flight connection or are traveling on a long-haul flight.

Cancellation : Free (online); $25 (phone); $35 (at an airport ticket office); $55 for reward flight cancellations (free for British Airways Executive Club Gold Priority bookings)

Seat Selection

  • Standard Seats: short-haul flights starting at $11, long-haul flights starting at $30
  • Twin Seats: starting at $45
  • Exit Row Seats: starting at $75

Unaccompanied Minor : Accompanied service was discontinued, so adult fare would be charged for minors, 14 years-of-age or over, who will be traveling alone.

Transporting a Pet: Pets are not permitted to be transported in a carry-on.

British Airways Food and Beverage

Note: Buy on board, prepay, and preorder services are temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Where meals are included in your ticket, these are served in an enclosed box to reduce interaction between passengers and cabin crew.

For short-haul flights, food and beverages can be purchased on board. Sweet and savory snacks, fresh food, soft drinks, and alcoholic drinks are available to purchase either with a credit card or even with Avios points:

  • Fresh food: starting at £3.90 (~$5.23)
  • Snacks: starting at £1.15 (~$1.54)
  • Soft drinks: starting at £1.50 (~$2.01)
  • Beer: starting at £4.45 (~$5.96)
  • Wine: starting at £4.60 (~$6.16)
  • Spirits: starting at £4.50 (~$6.03)

For long-haul flights departing London Heathrow, a complimentary meal is provided. You can also opt to upgrade your meal to BA’s exclusive online menu. There are 6 meals to choose from, ranging in price from £15 to £18 (~$20.10 to ~$24.12).

Many  travel rewards cards , like The Platinum Card ® from American Express and Chase Sapphire Reserve ® card  come with an annual airline credit that can be used to offset baggage fees.

Cardholders of the British Airways Visa Signature ® Card also have 2 ways to offset their baggage fees:

  • Pay for the taxes, fees, and carrier charges for your reward flight using Avios
  • Receive a statement credit of up to $200 — 3 times per year, up to $600 — when you book a reward flight using Avios and pay the taxes, fees, and charges on your card

British Airways has a fleet of over 260 planes made up of 12 aircraft types, making BA’s fleet one of the most modern fleets in the world. The fleet of Boeing 747, known as “The Queen of the Skies,” was retired in July 2020.

British Airways Customer Satisfaction

British Airways’ customer satisfaction has sadly tailed off in recent years, with stiff competition from low-cost carriers for its short-haul routes and competitively-priced Middle East airlines for long-haul flights.

Historically hailed as the “World’s Favorite Airline,” this doesn’t appear to be the case anymore, with customers taking to social media to voice their disappointment. These complaints are widespread and varied, covering lost baggage, poor customer service, decreased value, delays, and refund issues. Passengers have also voiced that BA seems to be unresponsive to comments on its social media channels, which simply causes more frustration.

Customers were not pleased with the 2017 changes to stop offering free food on short-haul flights. However, BA has formed a partnership with the much-loved British retailer, Marks & Spencer, to try to offset the displeasure of paying for food by offering such a reputable brand for purchase.

There is some good news on the horizon! BA is working through several aircraft refurbishments, and with the retirement of the older Boeing 747s, it looks like it is taking note of customer complaints about tired and outdated aircraft.

In 2010, British Airways partnered with Comic Relief to establish the Flying Start program that collects unwanted currency from customers and donates it to many Comic Relief projects around the world. To date, the project has raised over £24 million (~$32 million).

BA also donates to disaster relief projects and flies volunteers and aid workers to relief locations on chartered flights.

Final Thoughts

With its extensive route offering, preferred time slots at major airports, and professionalism, BA is still many passenger’s choice of airline. Greater competition across its route network has kept BA’s prices from soaring sky-high, with ongoing price wars between BA and Virgin Atlantic, in particular on transatlantic routes.

Now also heavily competing with low-cost carriers in the European market , BA has taken a risk changing up its business model when it had such an established reputation, and although it is striving to regain that respect, it’s not changing quickly enough for customers.

Even with the customer dissatisfaction, we acknowledge that BA offers great routes internationally, including its popular London-JFK route among business travelers, with many additional connecting short-haul flights to all major European cities.

Changing your seat

If you're flying with british airways.

You may change your seat at any time before you fly, up to and including at check-in (subject to availability). You can do this online in Manage My Booking .

  • If you've paid to choose your seat, you may need to pay the difference if you move to a higher priced seat, as seat prices vary. If you change to a lower priced seat, we'll be unable to refund the difference.
  • If you change your flight after choosing a seat, you'll need to choose your seats again on the new flight.

If your flight is operated by one of our partner airlines

You'll need to contact them directly to change your seat. You may have to pay to choose a seat, depending on the terms and conditions of that particular airline.

You'll be unable to change your seat on flights which are marketed by another airline and operated by British Airways.

What happens when we change your seat?

Sometimes we may need to change your seat, even after you have boarded the aircraft. Whilst we try to prevent this, it might be unavoidable for a number of reasons including a change of aircraft due to operational, safety or security reasons, so we cannot guarantee seating.

If we have to change your seat, we will attempt to find you a suitable alternative. We will try to seat your group together, then match your choice of window, middle or aisle seat, if possible. If you have paid for an exit row seat, we will try to offer you another exit row seat.

If we are unable to offer you a suitable alternative for seating you paid for, you can apply for a refund . See the paid seating terms and conditions below.

When you can claim a refund

You can claim a refund for seats you paid for within 30 days of the completion of the last flight in your itinerary where:

  • We change your seat to an alternative seat and you are unsatisfied with the alternative seat
  • We cancel your flight
  • You become ineligible to sit in an exit row and you inform us at least 48 hours in advance of scheduled departure of your flight, or
  • You have paid for a cabin upgrade and do not wish to pay the difference to select your seat in the alternative cabin

If your flight has been cancelled and already rebooked by British Airways within 48 hours of departure, there is no need to apply for a refund for your seat as this will be processed automatically. If you do not receive a refund within three weeks of your flight being cancelled, please fill in the r efund for paid seating form .

When you can't claim a refund

  • If you cancel your flight
  • If you are upgraded by us
  • If you are are considered unsuitable to sit in the seat type you have selected e.g. an exit row seat
  • If you choose to change your flight you will be entitled to choose an equivalent seat on your new flight. If you change to a lower priced seat, we will be unable to refund you the difference
  • If you accept a voucher towards a future booking that includes paid seating (see further the relevant voucher terms and conditions)
  • If you booked a British Airways-operated flight marketed by another carrier and you choose to move to a different flight

How to apply for a refund

You have 30 days after the last flight in your itinerary to apply for a refund of paid seating, where due. Please apply for your refund on our website as we cannot process refunds at the airport or on-board.

Unless otherwise stated, we will refund the credit card used to pay for the seat reservation, or if you paid using Avios, will credit the amount into your Executive Club account.

Terms and conditions

Availability

  • All paid seating is subject to availability and is only confirmed once paid for.
  • Paid seating is available on British Airways mainline operated flights and on British Airways-operated flights marketed by other carriers.
  • Paid seating may be offered by British Airways franchisee airlines. The seating Terms and Conditions of British Airways franchisee airlines may differ from those of British Airways mainline-operated flights, therefore we recommend that you refer to the franchisee airline’s relevant Terms and Conditions.
  • Paid seating may be unavailable on some flights operated by codeshare partners.
  • Paid seating for group customers (bookings containing more than 9 passengers) is only available where the reservation has been made directly with British Airways Group Sales. Group customers who have made their reservation through a travel agent or a tour operator cannot currently book paid seating. Payment with Avios is currently unavailable for group customers.
  • All un-ticketed passengers, including those travelling on a cruise or package holiday who have not yet received confirmation of their ticket numbers, are unable to choose paid seating until they have received confirmation of their ticket numbers.

Changes to seats

  • On British Airways marketed and operated flights, you may change your seat (subject to availability) at any time. If you change your seat to a lower-priced seat, we will not refund the difference in price. If you change your seat to a higher-priced seat, you must pay the difference in price.
  • You cannot make changes to paid seating on British Airways-operated flights marketed by other carriers.
  • Paid seating is not guaranteed, as seating may need to be changed for operational, safety or security reasons, even after boarding the aircraft.
  • If we change your seat, we will attempt to find you a suitable alternative. If you are unsatisfied with your new seat, you can apply for a refund of the paid seating.
  • Paid seating is not transferable to any other passenger.
  • British Airways changes your seat to an alternative seat and you are unsatisfied with the alternative seat
  • British Airways cancels your flight
  • You have paid for a cabin upgrade and do not wish to pay the difference to select your seat in the upgraded cabin.

The above does not affect any right to a refund you may have during a “cooling-off” period, if and to the extent applicable under local law. Details of this under Israel’s Consumer Protection Law 1981 are set out in our legal information .

  • On British Airways marketed and operated flights, if, in accordance with your ticket type, you choose to move to a different flight, you will be entitled to choose an equivalent seat on your new flight. If an equivalent seat is not available, any sums previously paid for seating will be forfeited and will not be refunded. Alternatively, you may choose a more expensive seat and pay the difference in price.
  • On flights marketed by other carriers, if you choose to move to a different flight, you will not be entitled to choose an equivalent seat on the new flight and you will not be entitled to a refund.
  • You have 30 days after the last flight in your itinerary to apply for a refund of paid seating, where due. Please submit your refund application online using our seating refund form . We cannot process refund applications at the airport or on board.
  • Unless otherwise stated, we will only make a refund to the credit card used to pay for the paid seating, or in the case of Avios payment, to the Executive Club Member’s Avios account.  

Exit row seats

  • Exit row seats are situated either next to or immediately behind the exit door.
  • If you choose an exit seat, in the unlikely event of an emergency evacuation you will be expected to assist us in opening the emergency door. For this reason, you must: be over the age of 12 years old, not be pregnant, not have accessibility needs or be substantially blind or deaf, be fit enough to operate an emergency exit door, be able to understand printed or verbal instructions given in English, and be willing, as well as able, to assist in the case of an emergency evacuation. When requesting an exit row seat, you will be asked to verify your eligibility.
  • British Airways has the sole discretion to determine whether you meet the requirements to sit in an exit row seat. If you do not meet the requirements, you will be assigned an alternative seat. The additional amount paid for an exit row seat will be forfeited and will not be refunded.
  • If, after the date of requesting an exit row seat, you become unable to fulfil the requirements to sit in an exit row seat, please contact us at least 48 hours before your flight in order to claim a refund.

Using Avios as payment for seat selection

  • Executive Club Members can use their Avios to pay in full or in part for paid seating on British Airways operated flights in Manage My Booking on ba.com or by calling a British Airways Contact Centre.
  • Paid seating purchased with this payment option will be subject to these Paid Seating Terms and Conditions.
  • All seats selected must be eligible for full or part Avios payment in order for Avios to be applied to the booking.
  • The Avios payment rates are defined in a fixed set of currencies. If more than one Avios payment option is available, it is not possible to change the price option chosen once a booking has been made.
  • The Avios payable will depend on the cabin class, route selected and the number of people on the booking. This will be displayed on the booking page.
  • British Airways reserves the right to alter the applicable Avios payment rates at any time in its sole and absolute discretion, but this will not apply to bookings already made.
  • When an Executive Club Member pays for seating using Avios, the Avios will be debited from the Member’s Executive Club account for each passenger on the booking.
  • When Avios has been used as full or part payment for seating, those Avios will be refundable only in accordance with the rules detailed in these Paid Seating Terms and Conditions.
  • When a seat selection is made using Avios as full or part payment for a member who is either on the Household Account or the Family and Friends List, the Avios will be taken from each Member’s Avios points balance in proportion to the size of each Household Account Member’s Avios points balance. Members of a Household Account can make full or part Avios payment for paid seating for people outside of the Household Account.
  • Avios payment may not be used in conjunction with any other promotional offers, unless expressly stated otherwise.
  • Members do not earn Avios and Tier Points on paid seating.
  • It is not possible to use Avios for paid seating on bookings made through Concur or on group bookings.

If you’re not careful, airline fees can really add up. If you’re planning on traveling British Airways anytime soon, know before you book what the fees are for checked bags, ticket changes, redepositing miles and selecting seats. Here is your guide to fees when flying on British Airways.

The number and size of bags you can bring on a British Airways flight without incurring a charge depends on the flying class and your status level.

By ticket type

Basic economy: No free checked bag.

Standard economy: One free checked bag.

Premium economy: Two free checked bags.

Business class: Two heavier checked bags up to 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms) each.

First class: Three heavier checked bags up to 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms) each.

Size and weight limits for bags

Here are the size and weight restrictions for your bags when you fly British Airways:

Hand or laptop bags can weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) and can measure up to 16 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches (40 centimeters x 30 centimeters x 15 centimeters).

Cabin bags (carry-on luggage) can weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) and measure up to 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches (56 centimeters x 45 centimeters x 25 centimeters).

Checked luggage can be up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) and measure 35 inches by 30 inches by 17 inches (90 centimeters x 75 centimeters x 43 centimeters).

Baggage above the weight limit could be subject to a charge of $100. Bags over 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms) cannot be checked.

Elites get more bags free

British Airways’ frequent flyer program, Executive Club , offers four different levels of status: Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Silver members can check two bags for free, up to 70.5 pounds each (32 kilograms), in economy, excluding basic economy, for every person in your booking.

Gold members get an additional free checked bag when booking any class, except basic economy, for bags up to 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms). This applies to everyone on your booking.

How much you’ll pay for extra bags

If you need to check more luggage than is allowed by your cabin fare class, you can pay a fee online or you can pay at the airport, which costs more.

Online, you’ll pay $90 for a second checked bag and $170 each for your third and fourth bags. At the airport, you’ll pay $100 for your second bag and $200 for your third and fourth bags.

If you need to travel with extra bags, check fares for the next-higher cabin of service. It’s possible that you could move up and use that bag allowance for less than you would pay in extra bag fees.

Traveling with strollers, medical equipment and other items

If you are flying with children, you can check two of the following items:

Fully collapsible stroller.

Car seat or booster seat.

Travel cot.

Baby back carrier.

British Airways doesn’t have weight requirements or charge fees for heavy medical equipment that is above standard allowances. This includes wheelchairs and equipment to help mobility. But bring a letter from your doctor if you need to travel with medical supplies like heavy equipment, liquids or syringes.

If you’ve already booked your flight but need to change your itinerary, the fees you’ll pay depend on whether you bought your ticket using cash or Avios, the currency of British Airways’ frequent flyer program.

Change and booking fees for flights booked with Avios

If you want to redeem Avios for a flight over the phone instead of online, you’ll pay a $25 service fee. If you need to change your award flight or cancel and have your Avios redeposited into your account, the fee is $55 plus a $25 service fee. These fees apply to flights originating in the U.S.

If you have Gold status or higher with British Airways, you won’t have to pay a fee to change award flights.

Change fees for cash tickets

If you need to make a change to your booking, cancel your flight or buy new tickets then you may have to pay a service fee. Service fees vary by cabin class, fare price and/or local laws and can range significantly.

Unless you booked a basic economy, you can choose your seat for free when you check in for your flight. If you want to select your seats sooner, you’ll have to pay a fee that varies by ticket type and your travel class.

Basic economy holders normally have their seat assigned by the airline at check-in, but they can pay either at time of booking or at check-in to select a seat, with fees varying by itinerary.

Simple Flying

British airways' business class seats: what to expect onboard.

One of several configurations may used depending on the aircraft type.

Like any typical full-service airline, UK flag carrier British Airways offers a comprehensive business class offering across its mainline fleet. Known as Club World, or Club Europe on short-haul aircraft, this product comes in various shapes and sizes depending on the exact aircraft and its seating configuration.

Club Suites have taken the offering up a level

Recent years have seen British Airways begin to overhaul its Club World offering with the introduction of a brand-new product known as the Club Suite. The most notable change this new seat has offered is the introduction of a four-abreast 1-2-1 configuration, with every single seat offering direct aisle access.

With first class cabins becoming a rarity in the world of modern commercial aviation, high-end long-haul business class offerings with low-density configurations have taken on greater importance. The introduction of the Club Suite, which features personal doors for additional privacy, 198cm (6ft 6in) beds, and 17-inch entertainment screens, according to BA , is the airline's way of joining this trend.

A British Airways Club Suite seat.

However, as lovely as the new product is, it is yet to become a ubiquitous offering on British Airways' long-haul aircraft. According to aeroLOPA , it features on all of the carrier's Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 787-10s, but only some of its 777-200ERs, 777-300ERs, and 787-8s. Meanwhile, none of its A380s or 787-9s have been fitted with Club Suites, although retrofits are planned for the coming years.

The older product

For British Airways' planes that don't yet feature the Club Suite, passengers in Club World must contend with a product that is sadly now rather outdated. On wider aircraft such as the double-decker Airbus A380, these seats are laid out in a staggered 'yin-yang' configuration with a 2-4-2 layout.

In other words, this setup features twice as many seats per row as the new Club Suite product. Furthermore, half of the seats face backward, and both the bed and entertainment screen are significantly smaller than the new offering. Specifically, these measure 183cm (6ft) and 12 inches, respectively.

Of course, the same high standards when it comes to the onboard service of food and drink are still present. However, where possible, these older seats are best avoided from a comfort point of view. British Airways' 787s are slightly better in terms of their old Club World product configuration, with 'only' seven seats per row.

The short-haul offering is rather basic

BA's short-haul offering is Club Europe, and, like many European flag carriers, simply consists of a blocked middle seat . While this offers greater operational flexibility with varying business and economy loads, the comfort levels are obviously inferior to, for example, domestic first class in the US. That being said, Club Europe passengers do get better catering and baggage than their economy counterparts.

    BA's premium economy cabin (World Traveller Plus) is actually the smallest cabin/area on the plane, and usually quite a popular choice.Thus I suspect that the reason you cannot select any seat, whether free because you have privileges, or for money is that all the seats available other than the one the computer has allocated you by defaul have been booked already, given the short notice upgrade.
