Boost team engagement with an employee survey template

Employee surveys are a crucial part in organizational improvement. By asking your employees for their honest feedback, you empower them to make the organization a better place to work for everyone. Our template includes 29 questions and a simple rating scale that will allow you to gain insight into your employees well-being, their perception of the company culture, and whether or not they’re happy with the benefits you offer.

Organizational success heavily depends on your employees’ satisfaction. The more they like to work for you, the better they’ll perform, and the more success you’ll see as a company. The best way to figure out how satisfied your employees are with your organization is to ask them.

Simple as it may sound, conducting an employee survey can be quite the undertaking. To make it easier for you, we created a template with 29 questions that you should ask in your next employee survey.

What is an employee survey?

An employee survey is typically conducted by the Human Resources (HR) department once a year. The purpose is to give your employees a chance to anonymously and honestly report how they feel about your organization. 

Questions usually cover topics like employee well-being, compensation and benefits, team dynamics, and company culture , among others. Once the data is collected, the HR department or an unbiased third party will analyze and evaluate the data. Based on the findings, you should create action items that address weaknesses or issues your employees pointed out in the survey.

Employee surveys are critical for gauging and managing things like job satisfaction, employee morale , and perceived work environment. You can also use employee surveys to evaluate your onboarding processes or as a part of your exit interview process.

Anonymity in employee surveys

If possible, aim to keep everyone’s feedback anonymous. When you clarify that the survey is anonymous, employees are more likely to feel comfortable being honest about how they really feel. To ensure anonymity, use an online survey or hire a third party to collect data. If you’re conducting the survey in-house using pen and paper, ask your employees to refrain from writing their names on it. 

In addition, make sure you aren’t asking questions that make it easy to identify which employee is filling out the survey. The smaller your organization and team are, the more important it is to avoid questions that are too personal. For example, if you’re asking what department a person is in, avoid asking for their age group and gender so they don’t feel like they could be singled out. 

Employees who feel like their anonymity isn’t guaranteed in a survey may hold back with their honest feedback fearing there will be consequences.

Pulse survey vs. employee survey

Pulse surveys are short employee surveys that consist of 1–15 specific questions. While employees typically complete surveys once a year, pulse surveys can be conducted quarterly, monthly, or even weekly.

Pulse surveys are a great tool to use when you’re trying to get quick insights into your employees' job satisfaction. As the same suggests, these questionnaires are a great way to get a pulse check on how you’re doing in between more in-depth evaluation surveys.

There are a few good reasons why organizations should conduct an employee survey:

Empowerment: Asking your employees for their feedback and input gives them a sense of empowerment and ownership over their careers. However, this only rings true if they know that the action items that follow the employee survey address their biggest concerns and your organization is making a true effort to change things.

Engagement: Employee surveys can help you manage and improve employee engagement. Since they’re encouraged to provide feedback, employees are more likely to feel engaged. Plus, they get to report how engaged they feel on a day-to-day basis.

Growth: Your employees can give you insights into weaknesses and strengths that you may not be aware of. This data allows you to make improvements that increase employee engagement and performance—ultimately leading to growth.

Benchmark: By regularly conducting employee surveys, you’ll eventually be able to create a benchmark for your organization that you can use to measure progress. 

Satisfaction: Employees who feel engaged and know they’re contributing to your organization’s success are more likely to feel proud and satisfied with their work. This can directly impact your retention rate and, in turn, your organization’s overall performance.

There are different types of employee surveys for all kinds of organizations, departments, teams, and scenarios. The kind of survey that every organization should conduct at least once a year is an employee satisfaction survey.

It’s a great opportunity to get holistic employee feedback —that is, if you ask the right questions. The following 29 questions cover the most important areas of employee satisfaction .

Employee well-being

Whether or not your teammates feel satisfied with their job depends on more than just their salary. A healthy work-life balance is key in employee retention. To ensure that your team members feel like they can balance their personal and professional lives, just ask for their feedback.

Here are some questions you can ask your team to find out how they’d rate their well-being at work: 

1. Does your work feel meaningful and stimulating?

2. Do you feel valued by our organization?

3. Do you have a clear understanding of our strategic objectives and how you can contribute to them?

4. Do you ever feel as though your work impacts your personal life and well-being?

5. Do you believe our organization is doing its best to promote employee well-being?

6. How would you rate your overall experience with employee well-being?

You can view employee well-being as the foundation of job satisfaction. Some of the other building blocks that make your team feel valued are the opportunities they receive when it comes to career development.

Career development and growth opportunities

The professional development options you offer your employees can have a big impact on their overall satisfaction. After all, career growth is what keeps many employees motivated to do their best work. Ask your team the following questions to find out whether or not they appreciate the career development you’re offering:

8. Do you feel motivated by your work and the opportunities that are available to you?

9. Have you taken advantage of the career development opportunities that we offered in the past 12 months?

10. Do you know what you have to do to move forward in your role?

It’s important to leave room for comments in your employee survey—especially in this area. If your team members have additional questions on professional development or feedback on the growth opportunities you offer, they can leave them here for you to answer and discuss later on.

Team dynamics and communication

When people spend 40 hours per week in an office (virtually or physically), it’s vital for their overall job satisfaction that they get along with their teammates.

Figure out if your employees can rely on their team members and whether or not they feel treated fairly by asking the following questions:

14. Is it easy for you to collaborate with your teammates?

15. Do you feel supported and valued by your manager?

17. Do you believe that team communication is clear and effective?

Look for large-scale trends around communication and collaboration in your organization but also within each department. For example, the survey could uncover that your marketing team is struggling with cross-functional communication. You can address that issue by asking further questions with a targeted pulse survey that may reveal your marketing team isn’t sure which channels to use for what kind of communication. 

Creating or updating your communication plan could resolve the issue and make cross-functional communication easier for your marketing team. 

As a leader or manager, it’s important to keep a pulse on your team’s workload to recognize signs of overwork . In fact, 80% of global knowledge workers report feeling overworked and close to burnout. This can lead to less engagement and be detrimental to your organization’s overall success.

Ask your employees about their current workload to get a pulse and see if there’s anything that you can improve to alleviate stress. Example questions include:

19. Do you feel like work is distributed evenly between your teammates and yourself?

20. Are your job responsibilities clearly defined?

If necessary, find ways to reduce or more effectively manage team workload . Perhaps, solving this issue is as easy as introducing work management software that defines your workflow, and reduces work about work with clearly assigned tasks.

Compensation and benefits

While money isn’t everything, fair compensation and healthcare benefits are important. These factors impact retention rate and will make it easier for you to attract new talent. After all, security and compensation are the two basic levels in the employee hierarchy of needs .

Find out what your employees think about their salary and the benefits you offer with questions like:

21. Are you paid fairly for the work you do?

22. Are you satisfied with our retirement benefits?

23. Are you satisfied with your insurance benefits?

24. Do you feel like you get enough paid time off to rest and recharge?

By hearing directly from your team, you can get a clearer idea of what employees are looking for and make internal changes that strive toward improvement. Transparently communicate your efforts to ensure your team feels heard and understood.

Company culture

Last but not least, you’ll want to inquire about how employees view the workplace culture at your organization. You can offer all the free benefits, events, or perks—if they’re not perceived as intended, you’ll have to make changes.

Ask you employees how they view and feel about your company culture, so you know if you’re on the right track:

How to evaluate employee surveys

You’ve collected all the data—great! Now what?

To ensure that your employees feel valued and appreciated, take some time to really digest and process the feedback survey. In order to improve the employee experience, you need to aggregate and evaluate their overall satisfaction levels. Here’s how:

Say thank you: Send a message to everyone who filled out the questionnaire thanking them for their time. Include the next steps and an approximate timeline in the message, so your employees know what’s happening next. The more transparent you are with this process, the more likely it is that your team will trust you.

Analyze and evaluate the survey responses: Whether you’re analyzing the data internally or letting a third party handle it, now’s the time to find out what your employees think about your organization. Uncover commonalities and look for trends within different teams, departments, or your entire organization.

Create an action plan: This step is absolutely critical and the whole point of conducting a survey in the first place. Gather your data and evaluate which strengths and weaknesses you want to address. Your action plan should clearly define in which order and how you plan to implement changes.

Share the survey results and your action plan: Transparency is key. Share the insights you’ve gained from the survey with your organization. Ensure that the way you share results keeps everyone’s individual responses anonymous. Follow each insight with the corresponding action item so your employees know how you plan to change things.

Follow up and repeat: Keep your employees informed about the steps you’ll take. This will ensure that they continue to feel valued and taken seriously throughout the year until you conduct your next employee survey.

We explore the differing survey reporting needs of several key stakeholder groups and consider channels and templates to use when sharing results.

Perhaps the most common pitfall that companies fall into when running employee surveys is in poor reporting of the results and a lack of action afterwards. Failure here will almost always fatally undermine the whole process. So, we thought we’d offer some guidance on this crucial aspect of surveys based on best practice and our experience in the field.Whatever the makeup of your organisation, you’ll need to report employee engagement survey results to different stakeholder groups in different ways and potentially using different channels and delivery formats. We shed some light on what this might look like, share some sample templates and the aspects of results you may include in each.

Reporting to your employees

You’ll likely want to give employees a results overview, perhaps including key findings, successes and improvement areas, and planned next steps. Naturally, the right format here will depend on where your employees are based and what will be most easily accessible to them. If, for example, lots of employees don’t have easy access to a PC, you could consider results roadshow events with a presentation by leaders supplemented by posters in staff areas. Where your employees are all online, you could utilise the company intranet or email to reach them – possibly with a short and snappy employee report. Alternatively video is a great medium to use to convey high level survey results in an impactful way.

Reporting to your people managers

At the manager level, this group will be most interested in the results within their immediate team or business area. We suggest providing them with PDF format manager reports that are ‘action-oriented’, clearly setting out their team’s scores. These might include information such as highest and lowest-scoring questions, a benchmark comparison with the rest of the business or external organisations, and key areas to focus on for follow up (likely to be areas proven to significantly influence employee engagement, and where scores are lower).The level of detail you choose to provide to managers should depend on their comfort with, and appetite for, data. For example, you may keep the initial reports quite light but then separately provide them with access to a more detailed breakdown of results.

Reporting to your executives and business leaders

For your senior leader population, they will want an overall view of survey scores across the business, and likely some more detailed analysis of results and the factors underpinning them. The report format we invariably recommend here involves creating a PowerPoint report for Executives, taking them through the results, highlighting major themes, presenting the outcomes of a key driver analysis to show those questions (and areas) most influencing engagement, and exploring where to focus action planning at a business level.Another aspect that can be tremendously insightful for senior leaders is open comments analysis of results. This would include categorised responses, showing commonly occurring themes and giving real-life examples of comments that fall within each and explore how they relate to quantitative survey data.

An employee satisfaction survey allows HR pros to measure employees’ feelings of contentment and empowerment regarding various components of their job. It’s accessed via an internal online link, allows anonymity and gives HR pros direct employee feedback on a number of specific topics. They’re simple and effective, and provide a lot of data HR pros can use to improve the employee experience and productivity.

Employee satisfaction and employee engagement aren’t interchangeable

One important factor to note is employee satisfaction surveys and employee engagement surveys are two different measurements. They both aid in making organizations better places to work, but they’re not the same thing.

Employee satisfaction surveys are “direct feedback tools that let employees share their opinions and experiences,” according to Indeed . They measure the contentment of an organization’s employees and identify areas that need improvement. Employee “satisfaction is tied to elements such as compensation, benefits, recognition, work-life balance, workload, company culture, effective leadership, etc. Ensuring [an organization] meets both the material and intangible needs for employee satisfaction is critical for retaining top talent and improving engagement in [an] organization,” details SurveyMonkey .

Employee engagemen t surveys are “designed to measure and assess how motivated and engaged [an organization’s] employees are to perform their best at work each day,” according to PeoplePulse . They provide insight into how employees feel about their work and the overall environment.

The goal for any company is to have engaged employees , and satisfaction plays a crucial role in that. Note: A satisfied employee can be disengaged. But a dissatisfied employee can never be engaged unless they somehow change and become satisfied.

Developing employee satisfaction surveys

There are no one-size-fits-all instructions for creating effective employee satisfaction surveys. The development of a survey depends on the organization and what they want to garner from the results of the survey.

But here are some general steps employers can use to customize their survey:

  • Select survey parameters: First and foremost, HR pros need to know what their company wants to measure before they can create survey questions. Basic topics to survey can include things like the actual job, the employee’s direct supervisors, peers, professional development, benefits, compensation, company leadership, etc. From there, HR pros can delve deeper into these topics with additional questions on specific aspects.
  • Write questions: Keep survey questions short, friendly and easy to understand. Don’t use jargon. Make the questions conversational, but direct – don’t add extra information. Only ask a question once. Even if it can be asked in a different way using different words, don’t. Only ask one question at a time. And use a mix of question types – open-ended, multiple choice, rating scale, ranking, etc. – to get the best results.
  • Keep surveys short: Now there is an exception to this step. The first employee satisfaction survey conducted will be on the longer side because it’ll be used as the base survey that you can compare future surveys. This survey should be comprehensive and include up to 30 questions, advises SurveyMonkey. Warn employees the first survey is long and that their full participation is wanted and appreciated. After that, try to keep follow-up surveys to 10 questions to avoid too much data and survey fatigue from employees.
  • Test out the survey: Have executives and supervisors do a survey test run. The last thing HR pros want to happen is a technical glitch or users encountering questions that are confusing.

Running your survey

Surveys aren’t something you can sit down and whip out in an hour after lunch. They take meeting with key people in the organization to figure out what you’re going to test and why. Then there is the crafting of the survey, getting feedback on the survey from the key people and implementation of the feedback.

After all the time and effort HR pros put into developing their employee satisfaction surveys, they want to make sure they’re effective and successful in gathering the desired data. To do that:

  • Emphasize surveys are anonymous: It’s important to let employees know with every survey that their responses are anonymous, otherwise some people may not participate. And you want each and every employee to participate to get a true gauge of how the entire workforce is feeling.

After further analysis, you see 90% of the respondents were male when 50% of your workforce is female.   • Compare the results to your benchmark survey. Remember earlier when we said the first survey would be longer? That’s because you’ll compare future employee satisfaction survey results to it. How often should you conduct employee surveys?

But make sure you’re not verging on too much of a good thing. Conducting surveys too often might lead to survey fatigue, where employees roll their eyes at the sight of yet another internal survey landing in their inbox. If employees lose interest in too-frequent surveys, they might not give comprehensive answers, not finish answering the questions, or even not start the survey at all.

Statistics indicate that organizations see the most engagement when sending out surveys once a month . Once your survey strategy is up and running, consider settling into a quarterly cadence, giving you four surveys per year.

Types of questions to ask on an employee survey

Engagement level

Employee engagement  is one metric that’s essential to understand. Employees who are engaged are more productive, happier, and more likely to stick around for the long haul, improving employee retention – all things you want. 

  • On a scale of 0-10, how likely would you be to recommend this organization as a good place to work?
  • True or false: You feel a sense of pride about working here.

To do their jobs most effectively, employees need to trust each other, their leadership, and their overall organization. Your questioning should provide insights into whether or not your organizational culture is one of trust.

  • On a scale of 0-10, how confident are you in this organization’s leadership team?
  • How confident are you in the integrity of your manager?

Organizational and role fit

Role fit refers to how well a person fits into their job title. Organizational fit shows whether an employee’s values align with the organization’s culture. These are both important because employees who fit well will naturally be more at ease – which is the prime condition for  doing their best work .

  • Do you know how your role here contributes to the organization’s success?
  • Does your role align with your values and make good use of your skills?

Ownership and involvement

When employees feel a sense of ownership in their role, they are empowered to make decisions, take responsibility, and own their accomplishments *and mistakes. They feel more responsible for outcomes and work harder to ensure those outcomes are good.

  • True or false: You feel empowered to make decisions in your role.
  • Are you given an appropriate level of responsibility?

Remember: above all else, employees are people and they should always be treated as such. Conduct an employee satisfaction survey that touches on the relationships they’ve developed at work and how those dynamics play out within their daily work. 

  • Do you have good friends at work?
  • Does your manager treat you with respect and care about you as a person?

Personal growth

Another important aspect is your employees’ personal growth. Many employees strive for long careers, and one of your objectives should be to help them achieve that goal. You can do this by helping them develop into an accomplished professional who is skilled, confident, and qualified. 

  • Does the organization offer you adequate personal and professional development opportunities?
  • Is anybody in this organization encouraging and helping with your career development?

Rewards and recognition

Employees want and need to be recognized for their contributions and hard work. Are you giving your employees appropriate salaries, benefits, and additional rewards or incentives? Consider including a few questions that touch on your current benefits and others they may consider valuable.

  • Do you feel you are paid fairly for the work that you do?
  • Are the benefits available in this organization valuable to you? If not, what benefits would be more valuable?

Health and well-being

It’s worth reiterating that your employees are people, and they need time to disconnect and focus on their physical and mental health. As such, wellness (and the pursuit of wellness) should be a priority within your organization.

  • Do you feel that the organization values your health and well-being? What types of employee wellness initiatives would you like to see?
  • Do you have a good work-life balance? If not, why?

How effective is your leadership and management? Lower-level team members are the best people to answer this question. 

  • Does your manager make good, timely decisions?
  • How confident are you in the direction you receive from your manager?

Another good employee survey category is to ask specifically about each employee’s role and day-to-day tasks.

  • Does your team look for ways to improve customer satisfaction?
  • Does your role provide you with a great sense of achievement?

Communications

Strong, healthy communication is absolutely essential for any business that wants to succeed. Get your employees’ take on whether they’re clear on the expectations and information they need. 

  • Do you feel informed about what’s going on in the organization?
  • Are your expectations clear?

Customer focus

Your employees can provide valuable insight into whether your organization is doing a good job prioritizing customers and clients.

  • Does this organization believe in putting the customer first?
  • Are you given appropriate training to help you provide the best possible service to customers?

Employees can’t be expected to properly do their jobs unless they have access to the resources they need, whether tangible (uniform, work laptop, monitors, headset, communication apps) or intangible (training/knowledge).

  • Do you have the physical resources you need to do your job well?
  • Do you have access to the information, knowledge, and skills you need to do your job well?

The questions above can help you identify several important areas for improvement within your organization – but you won’t want to use them all at once. For the best outcome, keeping your survey short, relevant, and actionable is best, making your employees more likely to complete it.

What should I do with the results of an employee survey?

After completing an employee survey, your job isn’t done: now you need to put those insights into action. 

1) Review results

Share the survey results with anyone on your executive team who needs to know. Together, you can analyze the results and brainstorm ideas to help. But don’t jump to the next step too quickly – take some time to reflect on what your employees said, processing the feedback you received. 

2) Interpret and analyze

Once you better understand what your employees want, it’s time to drill down into the numbers. Quantify data where you can. To help with this, rather than asking open-ended questions, you may want to design your survey with true/false statements or those that employees rate on a scale of 1-10. Then identify any patterns or trends you see.

3) Discuss key findings

Reconvene with executive leadership to talk about what you discovered. Discuss what your employees said, what the survey results mean for each team or department, and the desired outcome. 

4) Create an action plan

Next, decide together how you’re going to take action. This is not the time to think broadly. Instead, consider starting with just one or two areas of focus – whatever stood out in survey results as most important (or, alternately, any areas of low-hanging fruit that would be easy to start with). Later, you can expand to improve other areas. 

5) Communicate with employees

Before launching your action plan, inform your employees that changes are on the horizon. Be transparent, explain why you’re making the changes, and invite questions to encourage two-way communication.

6) Implement changes

Next comes the moment everyone has been waiting for: it’s time to put your plan into action. Designate a team member to oversee each area of focus to help smooth out any obstacles as your plan unfolds.  

7) Monitor progress

Keeping track of your progress might look like holding one-on-one listening sessions to hear how employees feel. Or ask department leads about any improvements they see as a result of your changes. And in a few months, it will be time to conduct another pulse survey or questionnaire and repeat the process again.

There are multiple ways to collect these pieces of information. Some companies conduct frequent, short pulse surveys while others go for an elaborate one yearly. We’ll explore different employee satisfaction survey examples, but up first, let’s see what makes up this survey?

Gone are the days when employees weren’t empowered by their employers, still they worked for their growth and success. Now, without satisfied employees, there can be no business success.

#1 The Quick Fix

From our experience, this is one of the most used employee satisfaction survey examples. So, it’s befitting to mention it right at the start. As the name suggests, this employee satisfaction survey directly aims to find the parameter or change that’ll make employees satisfied.

This survey is not over 3 questions long, and in most cases, the HR team finds what keeps employees engaged and focused for long. Let’s look at one such survey example:

#2 Let Them Express

Employees at the workplace want leaders to give a chance of expressing themselves. They don’t just want to pick an option or give a rating in satisfaction surveys. They want to express, as openly as they can. And as a leader or manager, you ought to give them this chance.

We are advocating the use of such employee satisfaction survey examples, as they’re a win-win for both parties. The employer, who gets to know about his employees on a deeper level, and the employees, who get to express their engagement levels and suggest ways to improve that. Let’s look at an example for this type of satisfaction survey:

This survey would comprise only of open-ended questions. So, keeping the questions to a maximum of 5 would be great, as you don’t want the respondents to get bored, and write random things or single-worded answers just to get done with the survey.

#3 Recent Experiences

Employee satisfaction is not something that’s fixed for life. It keeps changing with new employee experiences, good or bad. Hence, it makes complete sense to conduct an employee satisfaction survey just a day or 2 after a mega-event, seminar, training, or some celebration. #4 Likert Scale Survey

Using likert scale is one of the best employee satisfaction survey examples we can give. The way likert scale questions are structured gives an understanding of what employees think about a topic without asking them to express themselves. Giving open-ended questions to seek honest expression is integral to any employee satisfaction survey, but not all questions can be open-ended. This is the case where likert scale questions come into the picture.

Let’s say your organization conducted a new training program. Now you wish to know if your employees were satisfied with it or not. The best way to do that in the least possible time is to conduct a likert scale survey. Here’s how it works:

Statement 1: Satisfied with the new employee training program.

Statement 2: Dissatisfied with the new employee training program.

Here are the options your employees can choose from;

  • Strongly agree
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Strongly disagree

#5 Use Number Scale

Just like likert scale, scale-based questions are also used for employee satisfaction surveys. The reason is the simplicity and fast completion using this question type. The scales used can be from 1 to 5, or 10, or 20, depending upon your question and the importance of each scale’s value.

Any question can be asked using these numeric scales. Here’s one of the employee satisfaction survey examples you can use for it:

#6 Ask Indirectly

A lot of times, asking if the employees are satisfied isn’t enough. Ask questions about their work, working space, colleagues, office culture, manager, and more. Why? Because these factors decide the satisfaction level of every employee, and that’s where you need to get it right.

One positive of such employee satisfaction survey examples is that you understand employees on a much deeper level. Their motivation levels, what makes them happy, what frustrates them, part of the daily routine they like the most, and so on. This helps in doing better employee management going forward, and one of the prime qualities of a supreme leader is their man-management skills.

Since this survey type has a lot to ask, the questions also can be of different types from likert scale to open-ended questions. Plus, there’s no restriction on the length of the survey, too. Have a look at this survey example. You can use this as it is. It’ll get the job done.

#7 Recognition Is Crucial

#8 The Test!

The leadership group in any organization has got to do a lot with employees being satisfied or not. One thing employees have learned from the global pandemic is that it’s possible to work, and work productively, from home. Yes, continuous meetings on Zoom can get tiresome, but overall, employees can focus on the comfort of their living room. After doing that for over a year, 87% of employees don’t want to go back to their offices. They would prefer working from home over working from the office all day long. But what about the hybrid working model? Would employees be willing to work from the office 2-days a week, while working from home for the remaining days?

These are the questions that are currently affecting the employee satisfaction level. So, one of the best employee satisfaction survey examples is to talk about this topic and understand how satisfied employees are with the present working conditions and model. Here’s a survey example you can use:

#10 Address The Future

This is one of the few employee satisfaction survey examples that talks about the future of an employee rather than about their present or the past. See, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your employee’s satisfaction levels are no different (wow, what a comparison!). But knowing what they expect from the employer makes it easy for any organization to deliver on those expectations.

Since the conversation here is about the future, open-ended questions would work great. Why? As they’ll let employees freely express what they wish or expect, without restricting them to choose from given options. C’mon, we’ll look at an example for it:

You can include a variety of other open-ended questions depending on business needs, but make sure to not make the survey too long. As open-ended questions, coupled with a long survey won’t go down well with the employees. Try it and thank us later!

What Makes Up An Employee Satisfaction Survey?

“What’s exactly included in an employee satisfaction survey?”

That’s our clients’ first question about such surveys. The general notion is that questions and answer options make up these surveys, but there are other crucial constituents, too. Let’s talk about them one by one:

1) Survey theme: Before writing even a single question, figuring out the survey theme is important. Recognition, office culture, training experiences, and other more things affect the satisfaction levels of employees daily. The one you choose for a particular employee satisfaction survey becomes its theme.

2) Background & Fonts: Often the ignored side of an employee satisfaction survey, the background and fonts play a vital role in attracting employees to take up the survey. Not just take up, but do it with full seriousness without giving random answers.

3) Introduction: This is a constituent that many would suggest skipping, but not us. Giving a crisp survey introduction sets the right tone for the survey.  It leaves the employees with a hint of what to expect from the questions. Talk about the survey theme, the length of the survey, or the upcoming holiday season! Tell them why each response is important for you as well as the employees while collecting basic employee information like name and designation.

4) Questions: This is where the survey starts, and this is where you need to get it absolutely right. Ask relevant questions using the right question type. Don’t dig in for more information, or tire them up with a barrage of open-ended questions. Keeping the right balance and overall length is of umpteen importance here.

5) Answer options: Imagine this. You’ve asked the right question, but given irrelevant options to select from. How do you think the survey responders will react? They’ll just hit the first option they see, as none of them are making sense to them. Please, don’t make this mistake. Choose the right answer options depending on the questions asked. Don’t unnecessarily include more options or scale numbers just for the sake of it.

6) “Thank you” Note: Every employee who’s taking up such surveys deserves a “thank you” from your side. The reason is it’s not a part of their job, yet they’re giving their time to help you and your organization get better. So their appreciation should start from right here, from this show of gratitude.

The “Holy” Tips For Creating A Relevant Employee Satisfaction Survey

Know Your “Why?”

Why are you conducting an employee satisfaction survey?

You and the HR team need to answer this before starting with such a survey. Otherwise, it’ll serve no purpose. As questions that are included with no end goal would be answered in the same manner. So, if relevant employee satisfaction surveys are the aim, this is how things should start.

Spread Its Importance

Once the why is figured out, letting employees know about the survey’s importance comes second. Employee satisfaction surveys shouldn’t come as a surprise to them. They should know about it and its importance right from the start. Only then would they be willing to spare their time. So, don’t miss out on being vocal about these surveys.

Ace The Timing

We talked about one example where an employee satisfaction survey was conducted right after a training session.
