Home > English Language Arts Worksheets > Reading Comprehension Worksheets > 9th Grade
One of the many anchor standards we see often asks students to examine passages for evidence that supports a hypothesis or major thought. While students are new to the High School setting as Freshman, this is the first step students take to prepare themselves for college. To have a level of reading comprehension that keeps students at the national average they should be fluent readers with a decent vocabulary and understanding of grammar mechanics and syntax. What sets students apart at this level is depth of vocabulary and having the ability to infer what they are reading. We will find some students who have fallen through the cracks. The best way to catch up these readers is to have them read often and discuss what they are reading actively.
These worksheets look to address this standard pretty thoroughly. Characters of stories are often deeply analyzed and you will find two sets of sheets here that address that as well. Please pay attention to directions of each sheet as they may look similar, but ask you to do something completely differently. We also have a few worksheets that will focus on external literature. These are the big titles that most schools always assign. As students enter high school their reading endurance begins to be tested. Gone are the days of the several paragraph long passages. This begin to become frustrate students who don’t realize quickly that whether you are reading four paragraphs or four pages your approach should be relatively the same.

9th - 10th Grade Common Core Worksheets
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) provide a framework of educational expectations for students in reading, writing, and other language skills. The goals of the CCSS ELA are broken out by grade and subject area, including Reading: Literature, Reading: Informational Text, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language, as well as expectations in additional subject areas such as science and technology, history, and further writing areas. Ninth and tenth graders are expected to master reading and analyzing fiction and non-fiction books, be able to execute complex writing and grammar skills, branch out into new technologies and collaborations in their oral presentations, and continue to deepen the complexity of their reading choices. See the subheadings for each ELA category for more information on the specific expectations for students.

All worksheets have 3 versions:.
Just the text
The text with the questions
The text with the questions and the answers
We constructed it this way in order to reduce the amount of pages you need to print. We encourage you to print the version with the answers just once, for your own reference.
Use these texts online
We more strongly encourage you to use these texts online. Other than ecological reasons, practicing reading comprehension online is also much easier to grade, simplifies tracking of progress, adaptive to the level of the specific student, and increases motivation to practice with the students.

9th grade teaching tips
Ninth-grade readers are tasked with learning the difference between formal and informal tone. More specifically, students should be able to analyze how the author’s word choices impact the tone of the reading. Additionally, readers acquire skills related to differentiating between primary and secondary sources by examining things like the author’s point of view, the date the text was written, and the source of the information. Utilize the exercises below to advance these skills on top of twice-a-week practice with reading comprehension worksheets.
Writing Formal Letters
This activity asks students to write a formal letter to a person they admire, asking them to come to speak at their school. This exercise focuses on the use of formal language (i.e., complex sentences, avoiding the use of contractions) to help students identify how formal language differs from informal language. For example, students would write, “I would like to request that you come speak to students at my school about your experiences in the armed forces,” rather than “Hey, I’d love for you to come talk at my school.”
Thinking Like a Historian
Present students with a range of documents that discuss the same historical event. Then ask students to identify which documents were written at the time the event occurred and which were written after the fact. In doing so, students will learn one key element of primary sources – pieces that were written at the time the event occurred are primary while those written after the fact are secondary.
Examining Point of View
To understand how authors can have differing viewpoints on the same subject, ask students to analyze primary and secondary resources on the same topic from multiple authors. Specifically, encourage students to write down the differences they find in each account of the event. Then, use those differences as a springboard for a discussion of how people’s perceptions of the same event can be different both at the time the event occurs and as authors recount the event later on.
