Equilibrium is the point at which the supply and demand curves cross; at this point, the quantity demanded and the quantity supplied are equal. The price indicated at that point is the price we see in the market, and the quantity illustrates the amount produced.

As events unfold, we can predict what will happen to product prices and output, based on changes in supply and demand. If demand increases (shifts to the right), the equilibrium point changes, as prices rise and the quantity produced rises.

However, if supply increases (shifts to the right), we will find that the price decreases, while quantity produced increases . Decreases in demand and supply will produce the opposite effects.

Now let’s translate this theory to real life. First you should print this pdf worksheet to answer the following questions.

Read the summary of news stories on the pdf worksheet and use the information to complete the pdf worksheet.

• Is McDonald’s attempting to change the demand for or the supply of Happy Meals? Is McDonald’s trying to increase it or decrease it? [McDonald’s is trying to increase the demand for Happy Meals.]
• Use supply and demand curves to illustrate the change McDonald’s is trying to make. [The demand curve shifts to the right.]
• If McDonald’s is successful in making this change to attract and keep female customers in the long run, what do you expect to happen to the quantity of Happy Meals produced? What do you think will eventually happen to the price? [The quantity and price would both increase.]
• Is Iran attempting to change the demand for or the supply of oil in Western nations? Are they trying to increase it or decrease it? [Iran is trying to decrease the supply of oil in Western nations.]

When we understand the dynamics of supply and demand, we can predict the effects of changes on the prices we see and the quantities produced. As a consumer, if you have knowledge of events that can affect product demand, you will be able to act on those expectations to protect yourself against price fluctuations. For example, if you read a news report that the supply of beef is expected to fall and you know that may signal higher prices soon, you could buy additional hamburger now, at lower prices, and freeze it for future use. Or if you saw news reports about an upcoming concert that would lead you to believe the demand for tickets would be much greater than the supply, you would be motivated to get in line for tickets early, rather than waiting to pay the higher prices charged by scalpers. Knowledge of supply and demand can help you to make good decisions as a consumer, to make the most of your hard-earned dollars.

Voters in Enid, Oklahoma, oust city council member with ties to white nationalism

ENID, Oklahoma (AP) — Voters in the northwest Oklahoma city of Enid ousted a city council member with ties to white nationalism, according to unofficial results posted Tuesday on the Oklahoma Election Board website.

With all four precincts reporting in Enid’s Ward 1, results show voters chose to recall 42-year-old Judd Blevins. They instead selected Cheryl Patterson, a grandmother and longtime youth leader at an area church, to fill the seat.

Blevins, an Iraq War veteran, was narrowly elected to the seat last year despite his ties to white nationalist groups.

Blevins acknowledged at a community forum last week that he marched in the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. He also admitted being connected to the now-defunct white supremacist group Identity Evropa.

When asked at the forum to explain his involvement in the rally and his ties to Identity Evropa, he responded: “Bringing attention to the same issues that got Donald Trump elected in 2016: securing America’s borders, reforming our legal immigration system and, quite frankly, pushing back on this anti-white hatred that is so common in media entertainment.”

The recall effort in Oklahoma was launched by two longtime Enid residents, best friends Connie Vickers and Nancy Presnall, both Democrats in a county where Republicans have a nearly 4-to-1 advantage in voter registration.

Secretary Haaland visited Pennsylvania this week, where she announced more than $244 million in funding from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to address dangerous and polluting abandoned mine lands in Pennsylvania communities. During the visit, Secretary Haaland, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Principal Deputy Director Sharon Buccino toured a neighborhood in Bovard, an area dealing with subsidence due to historic coal mining.

Interior this week announced the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s approval of the New England Wind offshore wind project – the nation’s eighth approval of a commercial-scale, offshore wind energy project under President Biden’s leadership. The project, situated approximately 20 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, is expected to generate up to 2,600 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power more than 900,000 homes with clean renewable energy.

Secretary Haaland this week took action to protect the Thompson Divide area in central Colorado, one of the state’s most cherished landscapes, known for its ranching heritage and grazing lands, important wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities and clean water. A new Public Land Order withdraws more than 220,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service land from new mining, mineral and geothermal leasing for the next 20 years. Colorado’s farmers, ranchers, hunters and anglers have worked to protect the area’s streams, aspen groves, and ecosystems for generations.  

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Michael Brain, and Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton headed west this week, to highlight the President's Investing in America agenda when it comes to securing critical water access. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Brain visited the Kern Fan Groundwater Storage Project in Bakersfield, California, to highlight a $3.9 million investment for small storage water projects. In Arizona, Commissioner Touton joined Tribal, local and state leaders to announce a $25 million investment to protect and maintain the Yuma East Wetlands and Topock Marsh. And in California the leaders announced a $19 million investment from the Investing in America agenda to install solar panels over irrigation canals in California, Oregon and Utah, simultaneously decreasing evaporation of critical water supplies while advancing clean energy goals.  

Interior this week announced that up to $320 million is available through the President’s Investing in America agenda through the Bureau of Reclamation to assist federally recognized Tribes and Tribal organizations plan and construct domestic water infrastructure. The Inflation Reduction Act invests an overall $550 million to expand domestic water supplies in historically disadvantaged communities.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management this week signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States Coast Guard. The new agreement strengthens federal collaboration in support of the Biden-Harris administration’s priority to deploy clean energy to combat the global climate crisis.

Canadian Lawmaker Testifies Chinese Students Were Bused In to Elect Him

Han Dong, a member of Parliament who is accused of benefiting from the Chinese government’s help, testified at a public hearing on foreign interference.

A member of Canada’s Parliament testified on Tuesday that high school students from China were transported by bus to vote for him in a party election that is at the center of a federal inquiry into interference in Canadian elections by China and other foreign countries.

Testifying during a public hearing in Ottawa, the Parliament member, Han Dong, a Chinese-Canadian politician formerly from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, said that he had met and sought the support of the students from a private high school in 2019, but that he did not know who had chartered or paid for the bus on the day of the election.

A Canadian intelligence report disclosed during the hearing said there were indications that a “known proxy agent” of the Chinese Consulate had provided the students “with falsified documents to allow them to vote” even though they did not reside in Mr. Dong’s electoral district.

Noncitizens over the age of 14 can register and vote in party elections as long as they show proof they live in an electoral district.

According to the report, there were also indications that the Chinese Consulate had coerced the students to back Mr. Dong by issuing “veiled threats” related to their visas and their families back in China.

The Chinese Embassy has consistently denied interfering in Canadian politics.

Mr. Dong’s testimony was part of an ongoing federal inquiry into foreign meddling in Canada’s political system, especially the general elections of 2019 and 2021. The inquiry was called after a series of intelligence leaks to the Canadian news media indicated that the Chinese government had interfered in both elections by supporting candidates favorable to its policies and by undermining its critics .

The public hearing on Tuesday before a commission appointed by Mr. Trudeau featured for the first time political officials directly involved in the 2019 and 2021 elections.

Mr. Dong denied receiving help from the Chinese government during his campaign for Parliament in Canada’s 2019 general elections. Asked whether he believed that the Chinese government has interfered in Canadian politics, Mr. Dong said, “I’ve never seen any evidence of it.” When pressed, he added, “It’s possible.’’

In recent years, Canadian intelligence officials have issued public warnings about China’s intensifying efforts to sway votes in the populous suburbs of Toronto and Vancouver, which are home to Canada’s biggest Chinese diasporas.

Under President Xi Jinping’s aggressive foreign policy, China has tapped into its diasporas worldwide to try to influence local politics, according to intelligence officials, academics and diaspora members. Other nations like Australia have tried to curb China’s influence, including by establishing a registry of foreign agents.

Canada under the government of Mr. Trudeau — whose Liberal Party candidates were generally favored by China, according to Canadian news media — has long faced criticism for not doing enough to combat foreign meddling.

Mr. Trudeau steadfastly opposed a public inquiry into the topic, but, facing increasing attacks by the opposition and leaks to the news media, agreed to one in September.

On Tuesday, the Liberal national campaign director in 2021, Azam Ishmael, testified that the issue of foreign interference had been “low on the radar” in 2021.

But much of Tuesday was spent on Mr. Dong’s 2019 party election in his electoral district in Toronto, Don Valley North, before that year’s general election.

The outcome of the party race was significant because the district was a Liberal stronghold and the winner was almost certain to become its member of Parliament.

The party election in that district became a focus of the inquiry after Canadian news media, citing intelligence leaks, reported that Mr. Dong had received the help of the Chinese Consulate in Toronto.

A government-appointed special rapporteur said last year that the party election had been marked by “irregularities,” including “busing in of people and students,” and that there was “well-grounded suspicion” that Mr. Dong had benefited from the consulate’s support.

In an interview with federal inquiry officials in February, Mr. Dong did not mention the students who had been bused in. He acknowledged the fact for the first time in a written submission to inquiry officials on Monday, a day before his testimony. He did so, he said, after his wife “reminded” him of it.

Political scientists have said that the party nomination process of the Liberals and other parties was susceptible to foreign manipulation.

But Mr. Ishmael, the Liberal campaign director, said the party nomination process was “rigorous,” adding that he did not believe it was “vulnerable to foreign interference.”

On Tuesday, a lawyer representing an opposition lawmaker noted that even foreign students on “a one-year study program” could vote in a party election.

And a lawyer for a human rights organization pointed out during Tuesday’s hearing that authoritarian governments can coerce foreign students or diaspora members to vote in a certain way through various means, including monitoring cellphones and social media.

Would this fear “make members of diaspora communities vulnerable to coercion in a nomination race?” the lawyer asked Mr. Ishmael.

Mr. Ishmael said he had not thought about that “in depth” but added, “I would think so, yes.”

The inquiry commission, which is led by Marie-Josée Hogue, a Court of Appeal justice from Quebec, is required to issue a preliminary report in May and a final one in December.

The Chinese government leads other nations in interfering in Canadian politics, according to an intelligence briefing disclosed during the hearings. But worries over meddling widened last year, when Mr. Trudeau accused Indian government agents of killing a Canadian Sikh leader in Vancouver.

Minnesota man accused of faking military service charged with theft of $100k in government funds

Mikhail Robin Wicker purportedly spent more than a decade telling the people of Dilworth, Minn., that he once served in a Marine Corps unit that suffered one of the highest casualty rates of the Iraq War.

Federal prosecutors say he lied to Dilworth and to the federal government, to the tune of about $100,000 in veterans benefits.

Wicker, 37, never served in the military, according to an indictment filed Tuesday in a Minneapolis district court.

Prosecutors charged Wicker with theft of government funds, wire fraud and providing a false military discharge certificate. He also faces a charge of false use of military medals after fabricating a Purple Heart certificate, an honor given to troops killed or injured by enemy action.

Wicker received health care benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs as part of a scheme that ran from 2015 to 2020 in which he said he suffered from PTSD from his service and from injuries to his shoulder, knee and wrist related to a roadside bomb blast, prosecutors said.

The government accuses Wicker of submitting forged documents, including the fraudulent Purple Heart certificate, in 2016 as part of his disability benefits application.

After receiving about $1,000 a month for disabilities, Wicker applied for education benefits and used them to attend a nearby university, court documents said.

Wicker, who lived in the town of 4,600 people in northwest Minnesota, told people he had been a highly decorated prisoner of war from his time with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, according to the court complaint.

Forty-six Marines and two Navy corpsmen serving with 3rd Battalion in Iraq were killed during a roughly nine-month activation in 2005, according to “They Called us ‘Lucky,’” a book written in 2021 by Arizona congressman Ruben Gallego, who served in the regiment as a lance corporal.

Wicker made his initial appearance in federal court Wednesday. A jury trial is scheduled for June 10.

Government ignored warnings more than 100 companies may be misusing Centrepay scheme, Asic says

Services Australia’s failure to act ‘inexcusable’ and urgent action needed to help people struggling to get by, senators say

The corporate regulator repeatedly warned Services Australia that it should review and consider removing more than 100 companies from a government-run debit scheme that allows early access to welfare payments.

But it said its attempts to sound the alarm about potential misuse of the scheme have had no impact.

Guardian Australia last week revealed widespread problems with the Centrepay system, including its continued use by rent-to-buy appliance companies that had previously been sanctioned by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (Asic) for predatory conduct.

Last year Asic revealed in parliament it had repeatedly and privately expressed concern to Services Australia about 122 rent-to-buy appliance companies, many of which operate in Indigenous communities.

Asic asked the department to closely review the businesses and consider removing them from the Centrepay register. The deputy Asic chair, Karen Chester, told parliament’s financial services committee in November: “We have meetings with them regularly and we have brought these concerns to their attention. It just doesn’t seem to be having any impact in terms of the entities being removed from the register.”

Asic also raised concerns about 21 stores, mostly in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, that had access to Centrepay and were selling low-value household goods at a high cost.

Services Australia declined to answer Guardian Australia’s questions about steps it had taken to review the 122 rent-to-buy companies. A spokesperson said this was because it was currently reviewing the entire Centrepay system.

“We are committed to seeing this process through and won’t be providing further comment on individual businesses regarding Centrepay policy or compliance while it’s under way,” spokesperson Hank Jongen said.

But Labor senator Louise Pratt says the department should take “timely action” on the businesses that Asic has concerns about.

“I’ve raised concerns that businesses that Asic has concerns about have not been removed from Centrepay. This still appears to be the case,” Pratt said.

“Centrepay and Asic have assured me that they are working closely together. I hope this means that they will be pursuing timely action on businesses that Asic has previously had concerns about.”

Among the businesses that remain approved for Centrepay is Local Appliance Rentals, a franchise network of rent-to-buy operators working in areas with high Indigenous populations, which was fined in 2018 for irresponsible lending over an alleged failure to verify consumers’ financial situations, the inadvertent receipt of excess payments, the charging of excessive late fees and a failure to properly supervise franchisees.

A spokesperson for Asic said the regulator remained concerned that some businesses that are still on the Centrepay register “provide consumer leases which may place customers into financial hardship” because deductions for consumer goods “end up prioritised over essentials such as rent and food”.

“Asic hasn’t yet been informed of the outcome of Services Australia’s review of household goods businesses on the Centrepay register,” they said. “However, we engage regularly with Service Australia, including at the most senior levels; this engagement has strengthened in recent times.”

The Guardian also revealed that Centrepay has allowed hundreds of thousands of dollars to wrongly flow from vulnerable Australians to energy giant AGL. That money has since been paid pack, according to AGL. Services Australia is also seeking to return overpayments made via Centrepay to Ergon. It has refused to say whether other utilities companies have received overpayments via Centrepay.

The Greens’ social services spokesperson, Penny Allman-Payne, said the mismanagement of Centrepay was allowing exploitation. She called for an independent investigation of the system’s failings.

“There must be an urgent investigation into how Centrepay failed so spectacularly and a broader review into the appalling state of Services Australia and Centrelink ,” Allman-Payne said.

“And the government must come clean on just how widespread this problem of wrongful deductions really is and who else has profited from it.”

Independent senator Lidia Thorpe, a vocal critic of the failings of Centrepay, supported the call for an independent review of the system. She said it was causing real harm to Indigenous communities.

“The ongoing failures of Services Australia’s Centrepay system are inexcusable,” she said. “This system has allowed big businesses to rip off people who are struggling to get by, many of them First Peoples.”

Labor in opposition attempted to stop rent-to-buy companies using Centrepay through a private member’s bill.

“Now that they’re in government it seems they’d prefer to protect these big businesses rather than help the battlers who are being ripped off. It’s blatant hypocrisy,” Thorpe said.

Consumer advocates have been raising concerns about Centrepay for almost a decade and last year a coalition of groups wrote to the Albanese government, outlining 17 examples of Centrepay failings.

The letter alleged that, in one case, a 26-year-old Aboriginal woman in Tennant Creek had been forced to reach out to a financial counsellor for a food hamper for her two children and was later discovered to be paying hundreds of dollars in Centrepay deductions to local retailers, including a rent-to-buy scheme for home appliances and a local bus transport service, leaving her with a bank balance of zero on the day she sought relief.

In another, a Yolngu woman with a long history of homelessness asked for emergency relief in January 2023, a point at which her Centrepay deductions were more than $400 a fortnight to local retail stores for items no longer in her possession.

The rent-to-buy sector’s peak body, the Consumer Household Equipment Rental Providers Association Inc, says its members are subject to regular audits and strict regulation and had an industry code of conduct stipulating that anyone in financial distress could return goods and free themselves of debt, stopping them from entering into a debt spiral.

It rejected the suggestion that rent-to-buy operators that had previously been subject to Asic enforcement should be removed from Centrepay.
