This article will help you go through the steps and will teach you how to start a poultry farm business and get a share in the market.

Chickens are already an integral part of human life. Chickens are one of the major sources of animal meat, aside from pork and fish. As a business, they offer an opportunity for people to earn big that’s why there are many poultry farms out there. One of the major customers for poultry farms is the major fast-food companies, although some of them have their own chicken farms to supply their needs.
Don’t get behind the profits, and start setting up your poultry farms now. It is not hard to do so. Here are some useful tips that can help you along the way.
Get Financing for your Poultry Farm to Start Quickly
Setting up a poultry farm requires a lot of money, as poultry farming requires an expanse of land a hectare or more wide. You would also have to procure a large herd of chickens that are more than hundreds in number in order to generate the proper returns in income. Fortunately, you can avail yourself of loans that are offered to those that are starting or even those that are already in the business.

The loans can be used to cover these aspects of the business:
- Start-up costs for the farm
- Construction expenses
- Animal feeds
- Operational expenses that need to be paid urgently.
It is also easy to apply for these loans, as there are lenders that can be found online aside from the local loan providers in your area. The terms and conditions of these loans can also be customized for your needs and your circumstances. You can also choose from secured and unsecured poultry loans. Some lenders will also offer you advice from experts on the poultry business, aside from the monetary aid that you will be getting.
Getting Your Poultry Farm Compliant With Regulations
Another important preparation is to comply with regulations. If you plan on engaging in free-range farming, then you have to make sure that the operations of your farm and the treatment of your chickens comply with regulations that are formulated for businesses like yours. Check with your local government agencies regulating laws and regulations promulgated for poultry farms.
Adequate Medical Coverage for Your Chickens
Chickens are just like your children and other animals. To ensure the continuous production of chicken and eggs , your chickens should be regularly checked by veterinarians to ensure their health. Sick chickens will negatively affect your production, so it is important to have adequate medical coverage for your poultry animals.
Q. How much floor space is required per chicken? A. It depends on the chicken type. 3 sq ft is needed for light chicken and 4 sq ft is required for general-purpose chicken .
Q. How many types of chicken sheds are used these days? A. Most popular ones are the cage sheds and floor sheds are the ancient ones.
Q. What is the shed area required for 10,000 birds? A. 30,000 sq ft house is needed for 10,000 chickens, if you prefer a cage type of shed then the built-up area will be 4000 sq ft to 7500 sq ft depending on the type of cage you use in your poultry farm. The average space needed for a bird-in-cage type shed is from .4 - .75 sq ft.

- PHILIPINHO beginner adviser said on January 30, 2009 Everybody!!! We are all not from the same place (COUNTRY), so getting a loan will always differ, and chicks are not of the same price. But anybody can start a poultry farm, just don't start with too much loan from the bank. The best and assured thing to do is to start on a very small scale, maybe 100 chicks, then see what happens from there. Why should you get a loan for something, and then start using your profits for repaying the loan? Think twice. The bank is there not get everything you own, you might think they are of help, but they are not. TRUTH BE TOLD.

Poultry Farming Basics.
What is poultry farming.
It simply means raising different types of domestic birds commercially for the purpose of meat and egg production.

Why should you invest in a poultry farm business?
Before you venture into poultry farming in Ghana, you should have some reasons backing you. There are a lot of poultry farms in Ghana, yet the increased demand for poultry products does not cease. Some of the reasons I think you should start one are:
- It requires less special skills
- Poultry products are always in high demand
- You can start with very little capital.
- It gives a high return on the investment made.
- It serves as a continual source of income.
Choosing a poultry sector.
In Ghana, most people think poultry farming is only about raising chicks for eggs and meat.
However, it is a broad niche.
To ensure adequate success in the business it is important that you narrow it down.
Basically, you can choose from two types of poultry farming in Ghana: broilers and layers.
Broilers are raised for meat whilst layers are raised for eggs.
Many poultry farms in Ghana engage in multiple sectors in poultry: egg and meat production, incubating and raising chicks.
For someone like you who is just venturing into a new business, either decide on one sector, whether to raise broilers or layers.
When the business grows you can expand and operate in multiple sectors in the poultry business.
Writing a business plan.
This is the part most young Ghanaians fail to pay attention to.
It is, however, a very important part of your business.
Note that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.
Before you start any business make sure you have carefully written out a well-detailed business plan.
A business plan is basically a road map leading you to success in business.
It shows how you intend to grow and sustain your business. It should include the following:
- Type of bird you want to raise: in this post, I am choosing Chickens (either broilers or layers). If you want to focus on meat and egg production choose broilers and layers respectively.
- The location of your business. I will dive deeper into how to choose a location for your poultry farm in the next chapters.
- The capital you need to start the business.
Check your finances.
How much does it cost to start a poultry farm in Ghana? We are going to discuss that in this section.
Capital is required to start every business.
You need to do your financial projections to see how much you can begin with.
This is a small-scale backyard poultry farming starting with very few chicks; therefore, you don’t need a huge capital to venture.
All you need is commitment and dedication to the process.
Like every other business, the bigger you plan to start, the more capital required.
Since you are starting as small-scale poultry farmer you need to start with about 50 birds or less kept in cages at the backyard of your house.
This won’t cost you much. See the breakdown of the finances needed below.
- Small scale chicken rearing (about 10 birds) kept in cages at your backyard will cost about GHC 300 to start.
- A medium-scale poultry farming (50 or more birds) that requires land and other equipment will cost about GHC 2,800 – 6,000 to start.
As you’ve seen clearly from the above projection, it is wise to start small and grow big.
Finances in poultry is allocated to:
- electricity
- staff wages
- medications/vaccinations
- and many more
Now that we are done with the basics let’s dive into the step-by-step process of choosing the right location.
This is covered in Chapter 2 below.

Choosing a location.
I have already discussed earlier in this post that using your backyard to start the poultry farm business in Ghana will cut down cost to the minimum.
However, if you prefer getting a bigger space/land, read this chapter and see how to accomplish that.
Your first step is to get a land or space that is cheap and also consider a location that has all the required accessories and favorable for the business.
You can choose a place slightly far from town which has available labour and relatively cheaper.
Don’t set up your farm in a residential area due to the bad odour poultry farms produce.
Lastly, do consider transportation and availability of water at the place.
Constructing a structure for the birds.
The shelter is very important for chicks rearing and effective management.
After securing the land you need to get the structure built.
There are different types of structures you can consider.
The common types of poultry housing in Ghana are:
- The deep litter system: in this system, a number of hens are housed in a covered space within which they can move freely, on a layer of sawdust. This method is suitable for small-scale poultry farmers as it requires a fenced enclosure filled with sawdust
- The battery cage system: chickens are housed in identical cages connected to each other. Chickens have lesser freedom in moving about as compared to the deep litter system.
There are other housing types for poultry farming but I am only giving the these two.
Choose from any depending on your financial strength.
You may also import prefabricated poultry house made of steel from China or buy locally-made.
Getting the required equipment.
Once all the above are done, it is time to purchase the necessary and needed equipment to start.
After getting them, stocking the farm with the chicks follows.
See the list of required equipment you will need for running a successful poultry farming in Ghana.
Note that you may not need some of the equipment listed below depending on how you are starting your business.
Small scale requires lesser tools as compared to medium or large scale poultry farming.
Equipment Needed To Start Poultry Farming
- Waste disposal system
- Brooders or heaters
- Good ventilation system
- Lightening instruments
- stock keeping materials (POS, Notebooks)
Buying the chicks.
You are done with the structure, bought all the required equipment, what’s next?
Obviously, you need to stock the structure with chicks to begin the real business.
This is where you need to pay extra attention to as the health of the chicks is a factor to the success of your poultry farm business.
Get quality chicks from renowned breeders in your area.
It is wise to start with day-old chicks as a beginner instead of older chicks.
Day old chicks cost an average of GHC 5.00.
See the price list of day-old chicks from Halaal Farms below.
You can contact any of the top poultry farms in Ghana or import day-old chicks from countries like Belgium.
Raising the birds.
This is where much work is required.
The least mistake you make here can ruin your business.
Kindly pay attention to this part.
Your investment is supposed to yield high returns.
Once you’ve stocked your poultry farm structure with the chicks it is time to care for them by feeding them, providing them with adequate light and giving them the required medications for maximum protection.
Feeding is also cost intensive; it takes about 50% of your total project expenses.
Success in your poultry farm business depends on the quality of feeds you give your chicks.
There are two ways to get the feeds and they are:
- Buying the feed ingredients and preparing it yourself or
- Purchasing ready-made poultry feeds from popular sellers in town.
For a complete beginner, I will suggest you buy ready-made feed to save yourself of the stress of preparing the feed entirely by yourself.
Health management.
Poultry birds are susceptible to various diseases.
It is therefore important that you ensure proper medication systems.
Vaccinate them on time and always provide fresh water and food.
Contact a veterinary officer or an expert for further information in case you face any challenges in their health management.
Profitability of Poultry Farming in Ghana
Branding your business..
If you want to make your poultry farm stand out you need proper branding put in place.
Many businesses pay lesser attention to branding that’s why they eventually fail.
As other businesses need branding so does a poultry farm.
Branding is ensuring that your business has an identity in the area that you serve.
Customers should be able to relate well with your poultry farm.
To ensure your business is seen do the following:
- Get a well-designed logo for the poultry farm. You can contact our graphic designer who is well-versed in logo creation on.
- Get dedicated telephone numbers for your business. Do not use your personal telephone number
- Create social media pages and show the world your poultry produce. This might land you contract.
- If necessary, get a website for your poultry farm where you can showcase your products and provide buying options as well.
Branding is not limited to the above. It is a process.

Marketing your farm produce.
The chicks are fully matured, the eggs have been laid.
It is time to sell your produce to potential customers.
You need to do lots of advertisements to attract customers.
Advertisement can be word of mouth, referral, radio and TV advertisements, just to mention few.
Putting good marketing strategies in place influences the profit from your poultry farming business in Ghana.
If you are able to sell your products quickly and easily it is signal that you should expand the farm.

Illustrative Poultry Business Plan:
Executive summary:.
This business plan is for Myfamily Poultry Farm situated in the uncompleted potion of my house at No. 101 Family Road, Broilers Town. The business plan is a-three-year business plan and business projection for Myfamily Poultry Farm enterprise which is a family small scale poultry farm. Our operation is to cover only three aspects of poultry business. This is because we intend to keep only 200 broilers and 200 layers at a time. Turkeys re also to be kept. The capital outlay budgeted for this busines is only five hundred thousand Naira.
This business plan is a start-up business plan to define our operation and make projections for the business for the next three years.
Management team:
The 3-key players in our management team are myself, my wife and my grown-up son. The only experience we have for this business is that my son is a graduate of Agricultural Sciences specialising on animal husbandry. Since it’s not easy to get work in the country now, we have resorted to making do with what we can achieve by this poultry farming business.
The other member of our team which we must mention here is our business consultant, Complete Full Marks Consultants (CFMC) Limited that aided and supervised the production of this business plan.
Our marketing strategies re those that promote our farm and ensure that we grow in the business. They re marketing strategies that will enable us meet up with the projections of this business plan. To this effect, we have in place the following marketing strategies:
(1) Market Segmentation:
Considering our production value chain, we have been able to separate our market into segments. Such segments are those for:
- Public Market,
- Neighbourhood door to door calls,
- Wholesaler buyers by the market squares,
- Other poultry farms etc.
(2) Use of our social media platforms for our farm business promotions. (3) The distribution of a hand-full of farm fliers in our neighbourhood, nearby hotels and restaurants. (4) Attending and participating in some ongoing farm forum seminars and trainings to make our self noticeable.
Our Product & Production Processes:
We have plans and provisions in place to take adequate care of our birds. Such cares are in the area of:
Feeding : Feeding is major aspect of poultry farming. Therefore, poultry feeding is taking about 70% of budgeted expenses. We shall yet be buying the feed from the feed distributors until when we re capable of producing ours.
Good Water: Since our house has borehole already, clean water availability will not be problem for this business. We’ve bought reasonable number of drinkers (water cans) already. Our estimate for this is 15-birds-to-one drinker.
Environment: Environmental cleanliness is another aspect we have provided for. We have in mind of getting a young man whose duty will be to keep the environment clean all the time. We are aware of the fact that the birds could be sick because of dirty and infected environment.
Medication: Therefore, because of the environmental influence on the health of the birds, we have in place adequate arrangement for regular medication of the bird. In fact, we have contacted a Vet Medic for this purpose. Antibiotics, vitamines, and glucose re already stocked in our first aid box.
Farming Techniques:
The knowledge of certain poultry farming techniques re actually advantages for us. We’ve made good provisions for brooding chicks in such a manner that the mortality rate will be very low. In addition, we have gotten training on heath stress management. During the heat periods managing the poultry becomes something else. This’s also the same during the rainy/wet/cold seasons. These re in addition to what we already know about the bio-security measures to ensure high survival of the chicks.
On the part of our production activities, this will for now include:
Egg production – breeding of layers, Meat production – breeding of broilers, Turkeys and Poultry marketing, as need arises.
Feasibility Analysis:
Our business consultant, CFMC Limited has been able to conduct an elaborate research and feasibilit y studies which enabled our farm activities to be analysed as follows.
The feasibility analysis has revealed that the break-even point at different level of production are as follows. Egg production 6 crates/day Meat production 200 broilers/month Poultry marketing Turnover value N60, 000/month Turkey production 50/ 4 months
These break-even points are such landmark units and values that our operations must not fall below. Considering the variable and fixed costs element of these projection, Myfamily Poultry Farm is now in a position to maximise operations under incremental production principles to maximise turnover and profit. We are happy that this business is actually viable.
Financial Analysis:
Furthermore, our 3-year projected financial analysis consisting of projected Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Fund flow statement, and financial ratio analysis including financial indexes assumptions re attached as appendix.
The Business Viability :
The production and financial analysis above shows the business viabilty. It’s generating a gross income of N2,400,000.00 per year. 65% of this goes for operational expenses ( OPEX ) and capital expenses ( CAPEX ), leaving a net profit of N840,000.00. This is in fact, a great encouragement to my family to invest more in this farm.

HOW TO START YOUR BROILER POULTRY FARMING BUSINESS
Have you ever wondered why almost all restaurants in the world offer poultry or chicken meat? From the most famous fast-food chains like McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to 7 Star Hotels like the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab in Dubai. All of them offer a common product bestseller – “foods derived from chicken meat”.
This however implies that broiler poultry farming business, ‘if done right’ would be an all-time very profitable business in the world. Thousands of success stories have evolved on this business criteria with the owners having sufficient wisdom of how to efficiently raise poultry, best management skills and a better poultry farming business plan . This article will outline how to start the business, and the broiler poultry farming business plan.
Bill Gates, the richest man in the world wrote an article on his personal blog, “ Why I Would Raise Chickens ” saying that poultry farming is a viable investment which can give income for the common people. He regards poultry farming business as an excellent and profitable business. Thousands of chickens are being donated to charity by the Bill Gates Foundation as a means of helping the poor community to earn money by starting poultry farming business.
Broiler chicken farming is a lucrative business, providing income for millions of people, but there are some essential things you need to do before you venture into the business. You have to decide on the size of your poultry farming business project i.e. the number of broiler chickens you want to keep per cycle; location of the poultry farming business e.g. a chicken farm , and your target market. These choices will be affected by the amount of capital you have, and the size of your target market. If you do not have a lot of capital, you can always start small and grow your broiler farming business overtime, remember, Rome was not built in a day. You also need to carry out market research (Who are you going to sell the broiler chickens to? At what price?) and write a broiler poultry farming business plan before you venture into the broiler production business.
What you need
Land, housing and equipment.
The kind of housing you need and the size of the land will depend on the size of your poultry farming business project. When choosing the location for your poultry farming business, you have to balance the need for proximity to the market, with the cost of land, labor costs, security, and a good water supply. Your broiler poultry farming business plan should take into account all the costs of running the business.
When you are planning to construct a broiler chicken house, you have to select a site which is well-drained with plenty of natural air movement. Broiler Chickens cannot adjust well to temperature extremes, so it is very essential that the hens be housed, cared and provided with an environment that will enable them to maintain their thermal balance. You need to reduce temperature fluctuations, and this can be achieved by having the broiler chicken house oriented on an east-west axis to reduce the effect of direct sunlight on the sidewalls during the hottest part of the day. Good temperature control will enhance feed conversion and growth rate, making your poultry farming business more profitable.
Broilers chickens need sufficient space for them to grow well, they should not be crowded, otherwise they may suffocate to death and that will lead to a loss in your poultry farming business. Each broiler chicken requires about 0.1 square meters of floor space. which translates to 10 hens per square meter. So the size of the poultry house will depend on the number of birds to be reared. Your housing can be barns, chicken runs or hutches, and the cost of construction will depend on the materials used, and the size of the broiler poultry house. You also need poultry farming equipment which includes feeders, drinkers, lighting system and waste disposal system. The cost of equipment should also be take into account in your broiler poultry business plan.
DAY OLD CHICKS
You should purchase your day old chicks from a reliable accredited hatch ery or company where the parent stocks are well managed. The success of your broiler poultry farming business will partly depend on the type of day old chicks which you buy. Broiler chicks from different hatcheries vary greatly in terms of quality, and thus will be a determining factor in the success of your poultry farming business venture. You should assess the quality of the chicks by checking whether they are clean, dry, have bright eyes, are active and alert, and should not have any deformity on the body.
Buy your stock from accredited hatcheries which have a comprehensive history of vaccination and health management programme for the breeding flock. If you are new to the poultry farming business, you should enquire from other farmers to hear where they buy their chicks from, as they will usually have experience with various hatcheries. When you have purchased the day old chicks, you need transport them carefully to avoid mortality, as the day old chicks are tender and must be handled with care. The costs of the chicks should be properly accounted for in your broiler chicken business plan.
FEED AND NUTRITION
To be profitable in the poultry farming business, you have to minimize the costs and the mortality rate, as well as optimize the target weight of the broiler chickens. Broiler chicken stock feeds are formulated to provide the protein, energy, vitamins and other nutrients essential for health and efficient growth of the birds. Just like with day old chicks, the type of broiler poultry feeds you choose will have a great impact on the profitability of your poultry farming business.
Most broiler chickens are sold to the market when they are six weeks old. Each bird will consume about 4 Kg of feed from 0 to 6 weeks. At this age, they will have an average of 2.2 KG to 2.5 KG. The broiler chickens are given a specific type of feed depending on the stage of production. There are 3 types of broiler poultry feeds, which are Starter feeds, Grower feeds, and Finisher feeds. The chickens also require enough water for efficient growth. You will also need a b roiler stress pack/vitamin supplements which can be used to promote growth of commercial broilers and chicks, and also to combat stress during periods of high temperature, after vaccination and as an aid in recovery from disease to boost performance of the stock. All the feed costs should be included in your poultry farming business plan.
MANAGEMENT AND LABOUR FOR BROILER POULTRY BUSINESS
The number of farm workers you need will depend on the size of your poultry farming business project. If you are running a small poultry farm business e.g. 100 birds/cycle, you and your family may be enough to take care of the birds, but if you are rearing 2000 birds per cycle, you will need full time employees to manage the poultry farm. There is need for good technical knowledge of broiler poultry farming rearing techniques for success in the business, and good management skills.
CAPITAL FOR BROILER POULTRY FARMING BUSINESS
The amount of capital required for the broiler poultry business depends on the scale of the project. You can get a loan from the bank, or funding from investors, to use as capital to start your poultry farming business. If you plan to raise capital from investors and a loan from the bank, you need a good poultry farming business plan. If you don’t have access to investors and bank loan, you can use your personal savings and start small, and grow your business overtime. Broiler chickens are very profitable, so if you reinvest the profits you get, you can quickly grow. Even if you are not planning to get a loan, you should still get a broiler poultry farming business plan to guide you in starting and operating the business.
MARKET FOR BROILER CHICKENS
The market for broiler chickens is very huge and is ever increasing. The annual global demand of broiler chickens is 90 million tonnes. That’s a lot! You can supply your broiler chickens to individual households, butchers, schools, restaurants, companies, supermarkets, organizations, events, abattoirs etc. You can sell your broilers as live birds or you can slaughter and freeze them and sell them as dressed chicken. The broiler poultry farming business plan ought to include a proper marketing plan to use in your poultry farming business.
The export market is also very huge! As you grow your broiler production business you will be able to export the meat to other countries. The largest importer of broiler chickens is the Gulf Cooperation Council, which is a political and economic alliance by six Middle Eastern countries which are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Currently, the top producers of broiler chickens are United States of America, Brazil, China, European Union, India, Russia, Mexico, Argentina, Turkey, Thailand and Indonesia. The largest importers of the meat include the previously mentioned Gulf Cooperation Council, Japan, Mexico, European Union, Iraq, South Africa, China, Hong Kong and Philippines.
