Introduction

Welcome to our guide on how to assign an IP address in VMware Workstation. As a powerful virtualization software, VMware Workstation allows users to create virtual machines and run different operating systems on a single machine. Whether you’re setting up a test environment or developing software, being able to assign IP addresses to your virtual machines is crucial for network connectivity and communication.

Understanding how IP addresses work and knowing how to assign them effectively is essential for anyone working with virtual machines. In this guide, we will provide you with a step-by-step process to assign an IP address in VMware Workstation. We will also discuss the different types of IP addresses and common issues that may arise during the assignment process.

Before we dive into the details, let’s briefly explain what an IP address is. An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical identifier assigned to each device connected to a network. It serves as a way to identify and locate devices within a network and enables communication between them. IP addresses consist of four sets of numbers separated by periods, such as 192.168.0.1.

Now that we have a basic understanding of IP addresses, let’s explore the different types you may encounter when working with VMware Workstation.

Understanding IP Addresses

Before we delve into the process of assigning an IP address in VMware Workstation, it’s important to have a solid understanding of what IP addresses are and how they function in a network environment.

IP addresses are numerical identifiers that uniquely identify devices on a network. They allow devices to communicate with each other using the Internet Protocol (IP) . Each IP address consists of four sets of numbers, ranging from 0 to 255, separated by periods. For example, 192.168.0.1 is a common IP address format.

There are two main types of IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 addresses are the most widely used and consist of 32 bits, resulting in approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses. With the rapid growth of internet-connected devices, IPv4 addresses are becoming scarce. To address this, IPv6 was introduced, which uses a 128-bit address structure and provides a staggering number of unique addresses.

IP addresses are typically divided into two parts: the network part and the host part. The network part identifies the network to which the device belongs, while the host part identifies the specific device on that network.

IP addresses can be assigned in a couple of ways. Static IP addresses remain fixed and do not change unless manually modified. They are commonly used for devices that require a permanent address, such as servers. Dynamic IP addresses, on the other hand, are assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. These addresses are temporary and can change each time a device connects to the network.

Understanding IP addresses is crucial for efficiently managing network resources and ensuring proper communication between devices. Now that we have a clear understanding of IP addresses, let’s move on to the process of assigning an IP address in VMware Workstation.

Types of IP Addresses

When working with IP addresses in VMware Workstation, it’s important to be familiar with the different types you may encounter. Let’s explore the main types of IP addresses:

1. Public IP Addresses: Public IP addresses are globally unique addresses that are assigned to devices connected directly to the internet. These addresses allow devices to communicate with other devices on the internet. Public IP addresses are obtained from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and are required for devices like web servers or email servers that need to be accessible from anywhere on the internet.

2. Private IP Addresses : Private IP addresses are used within private networks, such as a home or office network, to allow devices to communicate with each other. These addresses are not globally unique and are reserved for private use only. Common private IP address ranges include 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255, 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255, and 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255.

3. Static IP Addresses: Static IP addresses are manually assigned to a device and remain fixed unless changed manually. They are often used for devices that require a consistent and permanent IP address, such as servers or network printers. Static IP addresses are beneficial for services that need to be accessed consistently without the address changing.

4. Dynamic IP Addresses: Dynamic IP addresses are assigned automatically by a DHCP server. When a device connects to a network, the DHCP server assigns an available IP address from a pool of addresses. This allows for efficient allocation of IP addresses and simplifies network management. Dynamic IP addresses are commonly used for devices that do not require a fixed IP address, such as laptops, smartphones, and other devices that connect to the network temporarily.

Understanding the various types of IP addresses is essential when configuring your virtual machines in VMware Workstation. Now that we have explored the different types of IP addresses, let’s dive into the step-by-step guide to assign an IP address in VMware Workstation.

1. Check Network Adapter Settings: Ensure that the correct network adapter type is selected in the Virtual Machine Settings. Incorrect settings can lead to connectivity issues and prevent the virtual machine from obtaining or using an IP address properly.

2. Verify DHCP Server Availability: If you are using DHCP to assign IP addresses, ensure that a DHCP server is available and functioning correctly. A misconfigured or unavailable DHCP server can prevent the virtual machine from obtaining an IP address dynamically. Check the DHCP server settings and restart it if necessary.

3. Check IP Range and Subnet Mask: When assigning static IP addresses, ensure that the IP address falls within the appropriate range for your network. Additionally, verify that the subnet mask matches the subnet configuration of your network. Incorrect settings can cause IP address conflicts or connectivity issues.

4. Firewall and Antivirus Settings: Check the firewall and antivirus settings on the host machine and virtual machine. Make sure that they are not blocking network communication or interfering with the assignment of IP addresses. Temporarily disabling these security measures can help identify if they are causing any conflicts.

5. Restart Network Services: Restarting the network services on both the host machine and virtual machine can help resolve network configuration issues. It can refresh the network settings and establish a proper connection between the virtual machine and the network infrastructure.

6. Ensure Proper Virtual Network Configuration: VMware Workstation relies on virtual networks to establish network connectivity for virtual machines. Ensure that the virtual network settings are correct and match the desired network configuration. Incorrect settings can prevent the virtual machine from obtaining or using an IP address effectively.

7. Update VMware Tools: VMware Tools is a set of utilities and drivers that enhance the performance and functionality of virtual machines. Outdated or incompatible versions of VMware Tools can cause network connectivity issues. Ensure that VMware Tools is updated to the latest version in the virtual machine.

By following these troubleshooting techniques, you can resolve most IP address assignment issues in VMware Workstation. If problems persist, refer to the VMware Workstation documentation or seek assistance from the VMware community or support team.

How To Configure Vmware Esxi With A Static IP Address

' src=

After the complete installation of VMware ESXi onto a server, you will probably want to give it a static IP address rather than using DHCP.

There are two ways through which you can configure ESXi with a static IP:

Via the server console management screen. Via the web GUI interface.

Set Static IP for ESXi via Console management screen:

1. First of all, get to the main screen on VMware ESXi server that tells you where to download the tools to manage the host (till ver6.0) or the web management url (for ver6.5 & above).

On this screen, press the F2 key to get the system customization screen.

2. Login into the VMWare ESXi Server by entering the Login Name and Password.

image 2

3. Here, select the Configure Management Network option. On the right-hand side, you can see information about the host name and the current IPv4/IPv6 addresses for the server.

Configure Management Network

4. Press Enter, you get another screen where you can configure the network adapters, VLANs, DNS, etc. Here we want to set or change the IP so we select the IPv4 or IPv6 configuration option. So, here, I am going to select the IPv4 configuration option and then press Enter.

IPv4 Configuration

5. On the IPv4 Configuration screen, select the Set static IPv4 address and network configuration option and then press the space bar. When you press the space bar, all the IPv4 configuration lines become editable. Type in the new IP address, subnet mask and default gateway that you would like to use.

Set Static IP for ESXi via the web GUI interface:

If you do not have the physical access or remote bios mgmt. tool to the host, you can use the vSphere Web Client to configure static IP settings.

Download Our Services Brochure

## There are high chances of losing access, if you are making other additional changes with IP, like gateway (accessed from different routed network) or VLAN. Based on our experience, ESXi server registers only a single change at a time. So use this option only if you are accessing the ESXi server from the same subnet and no change for the VLAN is required.

1. Log in to the vCenter Server from the vSphere Web Client.

2. Select the Host from inventory >On manage tab, select Networking>VMkernel NICs

Image 3

3. Here you can see the virtual switch of the management network, the VLAN ID and how many active ports are being used. At the bottom, in the vSwitch Topology box, you get the virtual name for the physical port being used on the server. In my case, it’s vmk0 . Click on that to edit it.

Management Network

4. Here you should see the entire current TCP/IP configuration, which you can change by clicking the Edit settings . Expand the IPv4 section.

Image 4

5. Choose from DHCP or Static, and then type in the new IP address and subnet mask if you chose the latter option.

Image 5

6. That’s about it! You’ll be asked to restart the management network, which will update the IP info. Obviously, if you are doing this over the web interface, your connection to the server will be disconnected. You’ll need to type in the new IP address to connect.

How to Configure a Static IP for an Ubuntu Server VM in VMware

Table of contents.

Typically, in most network configurations, the IP address is assigned dynamically by the router DHCP server . Setting a static IP address may be required in different situations, such as configuring port forwarding or running a web server behind a NAT.

This post explains how to set up a static IP address on Ubuntu Server 20.04 .

Ubuntu 17.10 and later uses Netplan as the default network management tool. The previous Ubuntu versions were using ifconfig and its configuration file /etc/network/interfaces to configure the network.

Netplan configuration files are written in YAML syntax with a .yaml file extension. To configure a network interface with Netplan, you need to create a YAML description for the interface, and Netplan will generate the required configuration files for the chosen renderer tool.

Netplan supports two renderers, NetworkManager and Systemd-networkd .

NetworkManager is mostly used on Ubuntu Desktop machines, while the Systemd-networkd is used on servers without a GUI.

Configuring Static IP address on Ubuntu 20 Server

On Ubuntu Server 20.04 , the system identifies network interfaces using predictable network interface names.

The command prints a list of all the available network interfaces. In this example, the name of the interface is ens33 .

2. Netplan configuration files are stored in the /etc/netplan directory. You’ll probably find one or more yaml files in this directory. The name of the file may differ from setup to setup. Usually, the file is named either 01-netcfg.yaml, 50-cloud-init.yaml, or nn_interfacename.yaml, but in your system it may be different.

3. To assign a static IP address on the network interface, open the yaml configuration file with your text editor.

4. To assign a static IP address to ens33 interface , edit the file as follows:

  • Set DHCP to dhcp4: no .
  • Specify the static IP address. Under addresses: you can add one or more IPv4 or IPv6 IP addresses that will be assigned to the network interface.
  • Specify the gateway4 .
  • Under nameservers, set the IP addresses of the nameservers.

5. Once done, save the file and apply the changes by running the following command:

6. Verify the changes by typing:

That’s it! You have assigned a static IP to your Ubuntu server.

What Is a Static IP Address?

I f you’ve done any research on internet protocol (IP) addresses, then chances are you’ve run into the term “static IP address.” Static means unchanging, but is that a good or a bad thing for your overall digital security? We’ll break down what a static IP address is and figure out if it’s right for your devices.

A static IP address is an IP address that stays the same. Typically, users create static IP addresses manually; internet service providers, or ISPs, can assign them, as well. Static IP addresses can be either IPv4 or IPv6, although as of now, IPv4 is much more common.

What Is an IP Address?

If you’re not sure what an IP address is, we’ve got you covered. “IP” stands for “internet protocol,” and it’s a device’s identifying number both within a computer network and outside of that network. Think of an IP address like a street address that lets people send letters to each other, but in this case it’s data. IP addresses reveal the user’s approximate physical location including their city and ZIP code.

What Is a Dynamic IP Address?

The opposite of a static IP address is a dynamic IP address, one that changes periodically. A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server assigns dynamic IP addresses automatically; after a period of time, they expire and get replaced.

  • Makes you harder to follow online
  • No need to change your IP address manually
  • Bad for DNS servers
  • Less accurate geolocation information
  • Websites won’t remember who you are

Static vs. Dynamic IP Addresses

Now, let’s put static and dynamic IP addresses head to head. Both show a user’s approximate geolocation, but they’re useful for different purposes.

When You Need a Static IP Address

To be blunt, you won’t need a static IP address most of the time, except for websites that need to remember your IP address. If you have a business with your own website or internet service and employees working from home, use a static IP address along with a business VPN . This will help your employees work from home safely .

When You Need a Dynamic IP Address

For everything else, there are dynamic IP addresses, the choice of most consumers. Since dynamic IP addresses make it harder to track you online, they’re the default option the majority of the time.

And last but not least, to find your iPhone’s IP address :

  • Open Settings.
  • Click Wi-Fi.
  • Under the lowercase i, click Network.
  • You’ll find your IP address under IPv4 Address.

Is It Hard to Change Your IP Address?

Once you’ve found it, changing your IP address isn’t hard. You can use a number of methods, but installing a VPN is the easiest option. But don’t worry; we’ll get to that soon.

How to Get a Dynamic IP Address

Now, to change your IP address (and change it again and again), we recommend using a VPN with dynamic IP addresses. However, although there are free VPNs as well as free trial VPNs , you’ll probably have to pay for a VPN in the long term. If that doesn’t work for you, we’ve provided some other options.

» Further Reading: Learn how to get a UK IP address

VPNs hide your IP address and change it periodically. Additionally, VPNs hide your browsing history for some added privacy, if that’s your reason for using a VPN .

Look for a VPN with dynamic IP addresses; we suggest ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, or IPVanish, to name a few. Learn more in our ExpressVPN review , Private Internet Access review , or IPVanish review . Once you’ve picked out a VPN:

  • Download the VPN from your app store.
  • Complete the installation process as guided.
  • Connect to a server. Your IP address will change automatically.

Another way to get dynamic IP addresses is to use Tor as your web browser. Tor is a free and open-source secure browser that isolates each website, clearing the cookies as soon as you move onto the next one. By changing your IP address and device information, Tor makes all users look the same, encrypting their IPs and web activity three times. You can download Tor for macOS, Linux, Android, or PC on the Tor Project website. 2

Proxy Servers

If you want to change your IP address only and don’t care about your web activity being hidden, you can use a proxy server in lieu of a VPN. Here’s how.

  • Open Safari.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Under the Proxies section, click Change Settings.
  • Update your settings with the necessary information that was provided to you.
  • Open your Settings.
  • Click Network & internet.
  • Click Proxy.
  • Click Set up under the automatic or manual section.
  • Enter your proxy information.

Click Save.

  • Select the lowercase i, in the WiFi section.
  • Scroll to HTTP Proxy section.
  • Click Manual.
  • Change the setting from Off to Manual.
  • Enter in the Server and Port information needed.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Connections.
  • Tap Settings next to the network name.
  • Tap View More.
  • Tap Proxy, then select Manual.
  • Enter your proxy port and hostname.
NOTE: Proxy servers encrypt your IP address only; your ISP will still be able to see everything you’ve done online.

How to Set up a DHCP Reservation

If you’ve ever tried to print wirelessly, then you know how hard it can be to connect your computer to your printer. That’s probably because your printer’s IP address keeps changing. So to combat this issue, some people set up DHCP reservations, which tell your Wi-Fi network to assign a device the same IP address every time. How to set up a DHCP reservation depends on the operating system, but if you use Google Home:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Click Advanced Networking.
  • Click DHCP IP Reservations.
  • Click the plus sign to add IP reservations.
  • Click the device you want to assign a static IP address.
  • Enter the static IP address.
  • Click Save. 3

How to Protect Your IP Address

The most surefire way to protect your IP address is to use a VPN, but you could also use a proxy server or the Tor browser, as we detailed above. If someone has your IP address along with your personally identifiable information , or PII, they could steal your identity , which is why it’s best to keep your IP addresses hidden .

And there you have it: everything you ever wanted to know about static IP addresses and more. But if we still haven’t answered your burning questions, keep reading below or check out our VPN how-to guides for even more information.

In most network deployments, generated MAC addresses are a good approach. However, you might need to set a static MAC address for a virtual machine adapter with unique value.

The following cases show when you might set a static MAC address:

  • Virtual machine adapters on different physical hosts share the same subnet and are assigned the same MAC address, causing a conflict.
  • Ensure that a virtual machine adapter always has the same MAC address.

By default, VMware uses the Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) 00:50:56 for manually generated addresses, but all unique manually generated addresses are supported.
