Don't like your launcher? Pick out a new one from among the best Android launchers. Don't like your garishly gray keyboard? Change it up! Got the same ringtone as that annoying coworker at the other end of the room? Just don't like the lame, old sounds that came with your sweet, new phone? No problem!

We have options aplenty for Android sounds these days, and once you get the hang of these tools, the world is your ringtone. Whether you need to find that sweet new sound or just need to know how to add a custom ringtone to your phone in Android 13 , we have you covered!

Let awesome ring.

If you already have a cool, custom ringtone you just need to add to your phone, then your job is very easy. All you need to do is head to your Android phone 's Settings menu and select the audio file to set it as your custom ringtone.

1. Open Settings on your Android phone.

2. Tap Sounds & vibration .

3. Select Phone ringtone .

4. Tap My Sounds .

5. Press the plus button in the lower-right corner to add your own ringtone.

6. Choose an audio file from your phone's internal storage.

7. Select your newly added custom ringtone.

8. Hit Save in the upper-right corner of the screen.

On some phones, the Settings app will see the new ringtones immediately, but if yours doesn't, reboot the phone. Upon reboot, the new ringtones should appear in the list of available ringtones in the Sound & vibration menu.

You didn't settle for a default ringtone, so why would you settle for a default notification tone? If you already have a text tone you like — I have about ten I'll cycle through myself — you can manually select it. The process should seem familiar by now since it is almost exactly the same as customizing your phone's ringtone.

3. Scroll down to select Default notification sound .

5. Press the plus button in the lower-right corner to add your own notification tone.

7. Select your newly added custom notification tone.

If your custom notification sound has been properly set, you will see its name underneath the Default notification sound option.

How to apply a custom ringtone to a contact

By giving each of your most-used contacts a unique ringtone, you can tell who is calling without having to scramble across the room and grab your phone off the charger. This is useful at all times, but especially during work hours, when answering personal calls can earn you a reprimand, but missing a client call could slow down your progress.

1. Open the Contacts app on your Android phone.

2. Select a contact.

3. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner.

4. Tap Set a ringtone .

5. Choose one of the presets or add your own custom ringtone.

6. To add your custom ringtone, tap My Sounds .

7. Press the plus button to choose a local audio file.

8. Select a custom ringtone and press Save .

How to find and set ringtones through the Zedge app

There are a lot of places to find ringtones, but far and away, the easiest is Zedge. Zedge is a customization app that looks to personalize your phone in a number of ways, most notably with its ringtone and wallpaper galleries.

Zedge even streamlines the process, letting you download and set your ringtone from the same screen! I will admit the ads on Zedge have gotten a bit much over the years, but if you like to change your ringtone every few weeks, you can shell out for the ad-free upgrade.

Browsing the Android app is a simple affair; you can browse by category or search for something specific. Once you find a ringtone in the app you like, here's how to set it:

1. Open the Zedge app on your Android phone. If you don't have it on your phone, install it from the Google Play Store first.

2. Select the Ringtones option from the side menu.

3. Choose a ringtone that you like.

4. Tap the download button on the ringtone's listing.

5. Select SET RINGTONE , SET NOTIFICATION , or SET CONTACT RINGTONE depending on what you want to do.

6. Give Zedge permission to modify system settings.

7. Select your option once more.

You'll see a toast notification at the bottom of the screen telling you the ringtone has been applied. If you wish to set a ringtone to a specific contact, as your notification tone, or even as your alarm ringtone, you can select those options from the same menu.

To confirm that your phone's ringtone has indeed been changed, you can check the Phone ringtone under the Sounds & vibration menu.

  • Back to the top ^

Your turn to give your ringer some zing

What awesome custom ringtones are you adding to your Android phone? I'm partial to Disney fireworks music, but Star Wars blaster and lightsaber sounds are pretty fun, too. Once you've customized your phone's sounds, don't stop there. Stay on track and customize your wallpaper and icons as well.

Personalize your device with the help of a great Android launcher . You can choose a theme and match your phone's notification sounds and ringtones to the wallpaper and app icons. There are some really cool icon packs available for Android phones, including one that lets you create custom icons .

ZEDGE Wallpapers & Ringtones

ZEDGE Wallpapers & Ringtones

Pick a theme and go all out with this awesome Android app for your phone. You don't need to go hunting for audio files when you have Zedge, because it has a vast library of ringtones and notification tones for you to choose.

What To Know

  • Most Phones: Settings > Sound > Phone Ringtone . Choose the tone, and press OK or Save .
  • Samsung: Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone . Choose your ringtone, and press the back arrow .

This article explains how to set your ringtone on a variety of Android phones as well as how to download new ringtones and transfer them to your phone. The instructions below apply no matter who made your Android phone: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

How to Set Default Ringtones

Depending on the model of Android phone you have, you can choose from several stock ringtones. Here's how to find and browse through them:

Open your phone's Settings app.

Tap on Sound .

The sound settings contain all sorts of options to adjust the different volume levels and tones on your device. These vary slightly based on your device and the version of Android that it's running, but they should all be fairly similar. Find the Phone Ringtone option and select it.

Depending on which version of Android you're using, the Phone Ringtone option might be under the Advanced section. If so, tap on the down arrow to open it up.

From here, you see a list of ringtones or a list of ringtone categories available on your device. You can tap a ringtone once to hear what it sounds like. When you find one you want to use as your default ringer, tap OK or Save to save the selection.

How to Set Default Ringtones on Samsung Phones

If you own a Samsung device, the process for setting a ringtone is a little different. Here's how to do it:

Launch the Settings app, then tap Sounds and vibration .

Find Ringtone in the list and tap it.

Choose the ringtone you want to set for your phone.

Finally, tap the back arrow at the bottom of your screen to set your new ringtone. You can tap the Home button to dismiss the Settings app.

How to Download New Ringtones From Your Computer

The simplest and least expensive way to get new ringtones is to transfer them over from your computer. Most Android devices can use regular music files as ringtones.

While plenty of devices accept other formats, sticking to MP3 and OGG is generally a good idea.

Connect your Android device to your computer via a USB cable. Usually, you can use the cable that's part of your charger.

On your Android device, swipe down from the top of the screen to see your notifications. You should see a system notification stating that your device is connected via USB for charging. Tap that notification.

A new dialog box opens up and allows you to choose what the USB is used for. Choose File transfer . Your computer might automatically open a window showing the phone's storage. If it does, skip to Step 6.

If your computer doesn't automatically navigate to the phone's storage, open Windows Explorer or whichever file browser is available on your system.

Navigate to where your device is mounted. This is the same location your PC displays connected USB drives. On Windows, it's This PC .

In your Android device's internal storage, find and open the Ringtones folder.

Copy any music files you want to use as ringtones into this folder. When you return to your phone's Sound settings, you should find them listed among the default system ringtones.

Where to Find Ringtones Online

If your phone's default ringtones don't offer the level of customization you want, go to Google Play  and do a quick search for ringtones. The search results include many apps—some paid and some free. Here are two free apps worth considering:

ZEDGE Ringtones & Wallpapers

Make your phone a conversation starter with free ringtones when you download the ZEDGE app . It also includes notification sounds, app icons, alarms, and free wallpapers. You can download and use a high-quality ringtone for each member of your family or for each of your friends. Categories include rock, rap, and country, plus classic ringtones and sound effects. Assign the ringtones to individual contacts from within the app.

When you download the RingDroid app , you'll be able to use up to 30 seconds of a song in your media library and create a ringtone from it. It takes a little while to get used to the interface, but once you make a few ringtones, the process is easy and effective.

How to turn any song into a ringtone on your Android phone

NextPit How To Make Ringtones

Want to stand out from the rest of the crowd? Custom ringtones are the way to go, and here we will show how to make a ringtone for Android way to personalize your Android smartphone. You can use your favorite songs as ringtones and assign each one to specific friends, family members or even your boss. Read on below to know how you can turn a song into a ringtone for Android via a step-by-step tutorial.

How to custom ringtone on Android

Create custom ringtones using a third-party app.

Android has a way to create custom ringtones baked right into its operating system. Since  Android 9.0 Pie  is possible to download anything special to get this to work. All you need is a song or audio file on your device. For this tutorial, we use the Google Pixel 5 running on Android 12 .

Once you have your file stored on your phone, head over to Settings and then Sound & vibration . Tap Phone ringtone > My Sounds and then at the bottom right of the screen click on the + icon to add a new ringtone to your list of default options.

NextPit Ringtones phone Android 12

You can choose from songs, artists, albums, genres or select a track from a folder. By searching through the files tab, you can even browse on Cloud storage for audio files. Once you have added a ringtone, it will appear in your list of tones. Simply select it and your new ringtone will be already set. The example pictured above is an MP3 track called Prince Johnny , by St. Vincent.

There are several apps on the Play Store which can do this, but for this tutorial, we'll be using an open-source app known as MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker. One thing good about this app is it does not blast you with ads right from the beginning, but only when you want to access select features. Removing the ads and unlocking all of its premium features (all songs, etc.) will cost a one-time fee of US$3.99.

In-app purchases are required to access additional features, but the bare basics are good enough for the average Android user who wants nothing more than cut a select segment from their favorite MP3 track. This app allows you to use any sound or song you have on your phone as a ringtone. Once you have created your ringtone, you can then set it as your default sound or assign it to a specific contact. In addition to ringtones, the app can also create custom alarms and notification sounds.

  • Download MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker from the Google Play Store

Getting started

First things first, you will need to install the free MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker app from the Google Play Store. To turn a song into a ringtone, you'll also have to have the audio files or music you wish to use on your smartphone's internal storage or its microSD card. MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker is compatible with MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG and FLAC audio files, among others.

  • Launch the MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker app on your Android phone.
  • Once the app launches, you'll see a list of options from trending TikTok tunes to Hindi Bollywood - whatever floats your boat! However, if you have an audio track on your smartphone that you would like to edit, you can select MP3 Cutter.
  • Select the song you would like to use as a ringtone from the list.
  • Once you have selected a song, its waveform will open up in the editor. Use the two sliders above and below the graph to choose a start and end point for your ringtone.
  • Finally, save the sound clip by selecting Save . You can rename it if you want to, and specify which type of alert you want to use it for (the default option is ringtone).

All the ringtones that you create will be stored in the Output Folder that can be accessed via the app’s main overview.

What song will you use as your ringtone? Let us know in the comments.

How to create and set custom ringtones for your Android phone

Mark Jansen

Making custom ringtones on our phones isn’t anything new, but with today’s devices, the process is now easier than ever. Here, we’ll show you how to make a custom ringtone for your Android device using a multitude of methods, including RingDroid, GarageBand, and AVCWare Ringtone Maker. Setting your phone to play Ed Sheeran’s newest tune every time your latest Tinder date calls has never been easier.

How to make a ringtone using RingDroid

How to make a ringtone using garageband (macos), how to make a ringtone using avcware ringtone maker (windows).

  • Copying your ringtone to your phone’s internal storage

RingDroid is an intuitive app that lets you create ringtones from any WAV, 3GPP, ARM, AAC, MP4, or MPE3 audio file stored on your Android phone. The process is straightforward and easy to grasp, at least after one or two attempts. The best part? It’s completely free, and you can create ringtones without your computer on hand.

  • How to save text messages on iPhone and Android
  • Google is launching a powerful new AI app for your Android phone
  • How to root Android phones and tablets (and unroot them)

Copy the song to your phone’s internal storage

The song will need to be in your phone’s internal storage before you can turn it into a ringtone. How you do this is up to you, but there are a couple of ways to do it.

  • The “retro” way would be to connect your phone to your computer to transfer it over manually.
  • Alternatively, upload the song file to your Google Drive account and then download it to your phone.

Create the ringtone using RingDroid

Step 1: Launch RingDroid. You can grab the app for free on Google Play if you don’t have it already.

Copying your ringtone to your phone’s internal storage

Once you’re done making a ringtone on your computer, you can upload it onto your phone in a few simple steps. Overall, it’s a relatively easy task:

Step 1: Find a USB cable and plug it into your phone, then plug the other end into your computer to stabilize a secure connection.

Step 2: Wait a few moments for your computer to identify the device. After it acknowledges it, make your way to your phone’s internal storage. From here, open up the Ringtones folder. If you have trouble locating a specific folder with this name, you will need to create one yourself.

Step 3: Disconnect your Android device. Follow the previous step-by-step directions on how to establish and assign ringtones successfully.

An additional possibility for you is to upload the ringtone to a cloud-based account like Google Drive or OneDrive. Immediately after you do that, you can instantly download it to your Android device. The good news is that this process doesn’t require a single USB cable, making it quick, easy, and stress-free.

  • Select Sound & notifications .
  • Tap on Phone ringtone .
  • Your new ringtone music should appear in the list of options.

You might not want your ringtone music to start from the song’s beginning. To pick your favorite section, you need to trim the audio, which requires some specialized software. Professional audio editors probably don’t need much help with paid software like Adobe Audition, Reaper, or Pro Tools, so we will offer guides for simpler and free solutions.

How to trim ringtone music using Audacity (macOS, Windows, Linux):

  • Download, install, and launch Audacity .
  • Go to File > Import > Audio .

  • Drag your audio to the beginning of the timeline.

  • Now go to File > Export and select your preferred format. I would use mp3.
  • Move the file to your smartphone and follow the tutorial in the section before to turn it into a phone ringtone.

Yes. You can use mp3 files as ringtones, as well as other file formats such as M4A, WAV, and OGG.

There is no actual limit to how long a ringtone sound can be. If the phone rings for longer than the audio is, it will just loop. Of course, if the phone rings for less time than the ringtone audio length, it will just be cut off.

Introduction

When it comes to personalizing your Android device, one great way to add some flair is by setting a custom ringtone. The default ringtones on your Android phone may not always reflect your unique style or personality. By setting a custom ringtone, you can add a personal touch every time your phone rings.

Setting a ringtone on an Android device may seem like a daunting task, but no need to worry! With the help of this guide, you’ll be able to set the perfect ringtone on your Android phone in just a few simple steps. Whether you want to use one of your favorite songs or a sound effect of your choice, we will walk you through the process.

In this article, we will cover everything from downloading a ringtone app to setting your custom ringtone as the default for all incoming calls. We will also discuss how to assign specific ringtones to individual contacts, allowing you to identify who’s calling without even looking at your phone.

So, if you’re ready to add some personalization and make your phone truly yours, let’s get started with setting a ringtone on your Android device!

Step 1: Download a Ringtone App

The first step in setting a custom ringtone on your Android device is to download a ringtone app from the Google Play Store. There are several great ringtone apps available that provide a wide selection of ringtones to choose from, both free and paid.

To download a ringtone app, follow these steps:

  • Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  • In the search bar, type “ringtone app” and tap the search icon.
  • From the list of results, browse through the various ringtone apps available.
  • Select the app that best suits your preferences and tap on it.
  • Tap the “Install” button to download and install the app on your device.

Once the ringtone app is downloaded and installed, you’re ready to move on to the next step of choosing a ringtone that resonates with you.

It’s important to note that some Android devices may come with a pre-installed ringtone app, so you might not need to download one separately. In that case, you can skip this step and proceed to the next one.

Step 2: Choose a Ringtone

Now that you have a ringtone app installed on your Android device, it’s time to choose the perfect ringtone that reflects your personality and style. The ringtone app will provide a wide variety of options, including music, sound effects, and even voice recordings.

To choose a ringtone, follow these steps:

  • Open the ringtone app that you downloaded from the Google Play Store.
  • Browse through the different categories or use the search bar to find a specific type of ringtone.
  • Once you find a ringtone that catches your attention, tap on it to listen to a preview.
  • If you like the ringtone, tap the “Set as Ringtone” or “Use” button. Some apps might have slightly different labels, but the idea is the same.

Alternatively, some ringtone apps also allow you to set a custom ringtone by uploading your own audio files. If you have a specific sound or song in mind that you want to set as your ringtone, check if the app supports this feature.

Take your time to explore the different options and listen to the previews before making a decision. You can always go back and change your ringtone later if you decide you want something different.

Once you have chosen your desired ringtone, it’s time to move on to the next step of setting it as the default ringtone for all incoming calls on your Android device.

Step 3: Set the Ringtone as Default

After choosing the perfect ringtone from the ringtone app, the next step is to set it as the default ringtone for all incoming calls on your Android device. This ensures that your custom ringtone plays whenever someone calls you.

To set the ringtone as the default, follow these steps:

  • Open the “Settings” app on your Android device. You can usually find it in the app drawer or by swiping down on the notification panel and tapping the gear icon.
  • Scroll down and find the “Sound” or “Sound & vibration” option and tap on it.
  • Look for the “Phone ringtone” or “Ringtone” option and tap on it.
  • A list of available ringtones will appear. Scroll through the list or look for the option to select a ringtone from your ringtone app.
  • Select the ringtone that you previously downloaded or set as a default within the ringtone app.
  • Once you have selected the desired ringtone, tap the “OK” or “Save” button to set it as the default for all incoming calls.

Now, whenever someone calls you, the custom ringtone you have chosen will play, giving your phone a personalized touch. It’s worth mentioning that the steps to set the default ringtone may vary slightly depending on the Android version and device manufacturer.

Congratulations! You have successfully set the ringtone as the default for all incoming calls on your Android device. But, if you want to take it a step further and assign specific ringtones to individual contacts, then proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Customize your Ringtone

Setting a custom ringtone is not limited to the options provided by the ringtone app. You can also customize your ringtone by using a specific section of a song or creating a unique sound. This allows you to add a personal touch and make your ringtone even more special.

To customize your ringtone, follow these steps:

  • Open the ringtone app or any audio editing app on your Android device.
  • If you want to use a specific section of a song, choose a song from your music library.
  • In the audio editing app, trim the song to the desired portion by selecting the start and end points. Make sure the duration is not too long to ensure it plays smoothly as a ringtone.
  • Save the trimmed portion as a new audio file. Some apps may have a “Save as Ringtone” or similar option.
  • In the ringtone settings of your device, locate the custom ringtone option and select the newly created audio file.

If you want to create a unique sound for your ringtone, you can use sound effects or recording features available in audio editing apps. Experiment with different sounds and effects until you find the perfect one.

Remember to save the customized ringtone as a new audio file and then proceed to set it as the default ringtone or assign it to specific contacts using the methods described in the previous steps.

By customizing your ringtone, you can truly make it your own and stand out from the crowd. Enjoy the personalization and uniqueness that comes with a tailor-made ringtone.

Step 5: Assign Specific Ringtones to Contacts

If you want to add an extra level of personalization to your Android device, you can assign specific ringtones to individual contacts. This way, you can identify who is calling you without even looking at your phone.

To assign specific ringtones to contacts, follow these steps:

  • Open the “Contacts” app on your Android device.
  • Select the contact to whom you want to assign a custom ringtone.
  • Tap on the “Edit” or “More” button, which usually appears as three vertical dots or lines.
  • Scroll down and look for the “Ringtone” or “Set ringtone” option and tap on it.
  • A list of available ringtones will appear. Scroll through the list or choose a ringtone from your ringtone app.
  • Select the desired ringtone for that specific contact.
  • Save the changes by tapping the “Save” or “Done” button.

Repeat these steps for each contact to whom you want to assign a custom ringtone. This way, you can easily distinguish different callers by the unique ringtone you’ve selected for them.

Assigning specific ringtones to contacts is not only fun but also practical. You can assign different ringtones for family members, friends, or important contacts, making it easier to prioritize or identify their calls.

With this step completed, you have fully customized your Android device’s ringing experience. Now, every time a specific contact calls you, their personalized ringtone will play, adding a touch of familiarity and individuality to your phone.

Setting a custom ringtone on your Android device allows you to add a personal touch and make your phone reflect your unique style and personality. With the help of a ringtone app and a few simple steps, you can easily customize your Android device’s ringing experience.

Adding a ringtone to android, method 1: using the default ringtone option, method 2: using a file manager app, method 3: using a ringtone maker app.

One of the great things about Android devices is the ability to customize various aspects, including the ringtone. Whether you want to set a catchy tune or use a personalized sound, adding a ringtone to your Android phone is a simple process. In this article, we will explore three different methods to help you add a ringtone to your Android device.

The easiest way to add a ringtone to your Android device is by using the default ringtone option. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Go to the “Settings” on your Android device.
  • Select “Sound” or “Sound & Vibration” from the menu options.
  • Look for the “Phone ringtone” or “Default ringtone” option.
  • Tap on it and browse through the available ringtone options.
  • Choose the desired ringtone and tap on “OK” or “Apply” to set it as your default ringtone.

That’s it! You have successfully added a ringtone to your Android device using the default ringtone option.

If you have a specific sound or music file that you want to use as your ringtone, you can do so by using a file manager app. Follow these steps:

  • Download a file manager app from the Google Play Store, such as “Files by Google” or “ES File Explorer”.
  • Open the file manager app and navigate to the location where you have saved the desired audio file.
  • Long-press on the audio file to select it.
  • Tap the options menu (typically represented by three dots or a gear icon).
  • Select the “Set as ringtone” or similar option from the menu.

Now, the selected audio file will be set as your ringtone on your Android device.

If you want to personalize your ringtone by creating a custom one, you can use a ringtone maker app. Here’s how:

  • Download a ringtone maker app from the Google Play Store, such as “Ringtone Maker” or “MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker”.
  • Open the ringtone maker app and grant the necessary permissions.
  • Choose the audio file you want to use or record a new one using the app.
  • Trim the audio file to select the desired section for your ringtone.
  • Save the trimmed file and set it as your ringtone on your Android device.

With a ringtone maker app, you can easily create and set personalized ringtones on your Android device.

Adding a ringtone to your Android device is a fun way to customize your phone and make it reflect your personality. Whether you want to use the default ringtone option, a file manager app, or a ringtone maker app, you now have the knowledge to add that perfect ringtone to your Android phone. Enjoy the personalized touch every time your phone rings!

One of the easiest ways to add a ringtone to your Android device is by using the default ringtone option. This method allows you to choose from a selection of pre-installed ringtones or use a custom sound file from your device’s storage.

Here are the steps to add a ringtone using the default ringtone option:

  • Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  • Scroll down and tap on “Sound” or “Sound & vibration.”
  • Look for the “Ringtone” option and tap on it.
  • You will see a list of available ringtones. Scroll through the list and select your desired ringtone. If you want to use a custom sound file, tap on the option to “Add ringtone” or “Choose ringtone from internal storage.”
  • If you chose a custom sound file, navigate to the location where the file is stored and select it.
  • Preview the ringtone by tapping on the play icon next to it. If you are satisfied with your selection, tap on “Save” or “Apply.”

Once you have successfully added the ringtone, it will be set as the default ringtone for incoming calls on your Android device. You can also assign different ringtones to specific contacts by editing their contact information in the Contacts app.

If you prefer a more hands-on approach to adding a ringtone to your Android device, you can utilize a file manager app to manually copy the audio file to the appropriate folder. Follow these steps to add a ringtone using a file manager app:

  • Start by downloading and installing a file manager app from the Google Play Store. Some popular options include ES File Explorer, Solid Explorer, and Total Commander.
  • After installing the app, open it and navigate to the folder on your device where the audio file is located. This could be in your Downloads folder or any other location where you have saved the file.
  • Long press on the audio file to select it, then tap on the “Copy” or “Move” option, depending on your file manager app.
  • Now, navigate to the folder where your device stores ringtones. This can vary depending on the device and the version of Android you are using, but common locations include the “Ringtones” or “Notifications” folder in the internal storage.
  • In the ringtones folder, tap on the “Paste” option to copy the audio file from the previous location to the ringtones folder.
  • Once the file is successfully copied, you can close the file manager app.
  • Now, go to your device’s Settings and tap on “Sound” or “Sounds & Vibration”, then select “Phone ringtone” or “Default ringtone” depending on your device.
  • You should now see the newly copied audio file listed as an option. Tap on it to set it as your ringtone.
  • Enjoy your customized ringtone on your Android device!

Using a file manager app gives you more control and flexibility when adding ringtones to your Android device. It allows you to choose any audio file from your device’s storage and copy it to the appropriate folder. With just a few simple steps, you can personalize your device’s ringtone and stand out from the crowd.

If you’re looking for a more personalized and customized ringtone, using a ringtone maker app is the way to go. This method allows you to create your own unique ringtone from any audio file on your Android device.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to add a ringtone to your Android using a ringtone maker app:

  • First, head over to the Google Play Store and search for a reputable ringtone maker app. There are plenty of options available, such as Ringdroid, MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker, and Zedge.
  • Once you’ve found the app you want to use, proceed to install it on your Android device.
  • Open the ringtone maker app and grant any necessary permissions it may require to access your device’s audio files.
  • Next, select the audio file you want to turn into a ringtone. This can be a song, a sound effect, or any other audio file stored on your device.
  • Once you’ve chosen the audio file, use the app’s editing tools to trim, cut, and adjust the duration of the selected portion.
  • After you’re satisfied with the edits, save the trimmed audio as a ringtone file. The app will usually give you the option to set it as the default ringtone or assign it to a specific contact.
  • Lastly, head over to your device’s settings and navigate to the sound and notification settings. From there, you can select the newly created ringtone as your default ringtone or assign it to specific contacts.

Using a ringtone maker app offers a great level of flexibility and allows you to truly personalize your Android device’s ringtone. Experiment with different audio files, get creative with the editing tools, and have fun crafting the perfect ringtone that reflects your unique style.

Adding a new ringtone to your Android device is a simple and straightforward process that allows you to personalize your device and make it truly unique. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily customize your Android device with your favorite songs, catchy tunes, or even custom recordings.

Remember, the key to successfully adding a ringtone to your Android device is to ensure that it is in the correct format (e.g., MP3) and saved in the designated folder. Whether you choose to use a third-party app or manually transfer the ringtone, it’s important to keep in mind that different Android devices may have slightly different procedures for adding a ringtone.

Now that you have the knowledge and the tools, go ahead and give your Android device a personal touch by adding a ringtone that truly reflects your style and personality.

How to change the ringtone on your Android phone

A recent discussion among friends wondered if anyone really used ringtones anymore. The idea was that most people (those who still use their phones to hold verbal conversations) either go with whatever ringtone their phone comes with or just use vibrations.

Once upon a time, ringtones were a thing. You could use them for amusement. (My favorite was a bored voice that said, “Ring. Ring. Ring.”) You could use them to know who was calling without having to look at the phone (so you knew when to pick up and when to let it go to voicemail). Now, maybe, not so much.

Still, Google recently added a bunch of new ringtones to its Pixel phones , so presumably, some of us are still playing around with these sounds. In case you count yourself in that group, here’s how to change your ringtone, create your own, and assign a unique ringtone to a contact.

Because the methods for Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones can vary, we’ve included directions for both. If you have a different Android phone, you should be able to use one of these as a guide.

These directions were tested using a Pixel 6 and a Galaxy S23 running Android 14.

Using a Samsung Galaxy

Change your ringtone.

  • Go to Settings > Sound and vibration > Ringtone .
  • Once you’re in Ringtone , you can choose from a wide variety of sounds. Your current volume and whether you have vibrate activated will be on top, along with Samsung’s brand sounds. If you’ve chosen a different sound, you’ll have to swipe down to find it.

Add a custom ringtone

  • Tap the plus sign in the upper-right corner.
  • You’ll see a list of all your available audio files on the Sound picker page. Select the one you want to use. A toggle above the list lets you play either the entire file or selected highlights.

Add a unique ringtone for a contact

To select a specific ringtone for one of your contacts:

  • Open the Phone app and choose Contacts from the bottom menu.
  • Select the contact you want to choose the ringtone for.
  • From the icons that appear, select the Information icon .
  • Tap the three dots labeled More and select Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone .
  • You’ll be back on the Ringtones page; select the ringtone you want to assign to that contact.

Using a Google Pixel

  • Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone .
  • Alternately, you can press your volume up or volume down key, tap the three dots under the volume indicator, tap the Settings button, and select Phone ringtone .
  • Once you’re in Phone ringtone , you can choose from a wide variety of sounds; your current ringtone will be on top. When you’ve chosen a ringtone, hit Save in the upper-right corner.

There are a number of apps available in the Play Store that will create and install ringtones for you. However, if you have an audio file of your own that you want to use, here’s how to make it available:

  • After creating or downloading the audio file, use Google’s Files app to locate it by going to Browse in the bottom menu, and then choose the Audio category. (If you use a different file app, of course you can use that instead.)
  • Find and tap the audio file.
  • Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right and select Set as ringtone.
  • Open the Phone app and choose Contacts from the bottom menu (or simply go straight to the Contacts app).
  • From the contact page, tap the three dots on the upper right, and select Set ringtone .
  • You’ll be on the Sounds page (which is, in essence, the same as the Phone ringtone page). Select the ringtone you want to assign to that contact.
