Craft Room Tour: My Organization and Storage Projects

I’m so excited to finally give you a craft room tour! Come peek inside my special place and see all of my organization projects and storage solutions.

I didn’t always have a craft room. In fact, for the longest time, I simply crafted wherever I could find some free space. But about a year into this blog journey, I decided it was time for a dedicated craft space . I came up with some designs and got to work, cleaning, sorting, organizing, and decorating. It’s been a year since I began, but I’m so happy to be able to give you a complete craft room tour!

Now, I think it’s important for you to see where this all started . The journey is as important as the destination, right? This is what this room looked like when we moved into the house.

And here’s what it looked like after we moved in and did some painting . This 14′ x 20′ room used to be our family room. Note the fireplace!

Then over the years, the room became my office and one corner of it changed to look like this (see the closet nook tutorial and desk tutorial here). You can still see the old yellow-orange paint on the wall here.

This was a fine space to work. The only problem was that the rest of the room looked all dark and dreary this:

That table and chair you see there is where I crafted for a year. It was WAY TOO SMALL and a terrible use of the space. I resolved to change this, and I did!

Let’s Do This: My Craft Room Tour!

As you walk into my craft room, this is what you are welcomed with. Quite a bit different than before!

First, let’s look at the final craft room floorplan so you can see how my craft room looks overall:

I created many of the storage solutions in this craft room, and nearly all of them have tutorials on my blog. There’s just one missing at this point, and that’s only because I just finished it!

My Craft Room Table

The focal point of the room is this HUGE craft room table, which is 5′ x 5′ and has room for me and guests, plus tons of storage. It even hides my two trash cans underneath. Here’s the full tutorial to make the IKEA Craft Room Table with Storage!

My Craft Room Tall Standing Table / Light Box:

I have another table in the room — my tall standing table. I use this mostly as a lightbox for taking well-light photos, but I can also close it and use the space for other projects, like sewing. You can read exactly how I attached the legs to the IKEA craft room storage in this tutorial.

Over on the right side of standing desk is my craft cart! I love this thing — it’s cute and it moves around the room as I need. I painted and decorated mine — learn more about where I got it and how I painted it here:  IKEA Raskog Cart: The Best Craft Organizer

Beside the craft cart is my hanging wall, where I can hang various things and projects. Right now it’s holding paper, but it could be used for any number of things. Learn how to make these curtain rods inexpensively and easily here!

Moving down the room, we come to my embellishment wall . This is where I keep my bits and bobs, as well as my craft paints. I love those embellishment shelf units ( here’s where you can get them ). (Tip: You can watch us put these up on the walls, and see each item as I put them on the shelves, in this video in my Facebook group .)

The flower in the middle is my Paint Flower! I made this from PVC pipe and a duct collar — get the Paint Flower tutorial here!

That overhead shelf with the lights is something we made, too! We have two of them in this room and they provide excellent illumination and storage. And, yes, I have an entire tutorial for the lighted shelf as well:

Remember, how I mentioned we had a fireplace in this room? You can see no trace of it now, other than the mantle. We completed covered (and insulated) the opening, then put a removable panel over it. I think it turned out great and serves as an excellent background for me when I’m doing video tutorials :

Moving around the craft room, we get to my giant pegboard! This thing is amazing for keeping tools handy, plus it’s just so darn cheerful that I can’t help but smile. You can learn how to make the large framed pegboard here .

Next to my pegboard is my paper storage tower , which holds 12″ x 12″ paper as well as letter-size paper. Here’s the tutorial to make the Paper Storage Tower .

And that little pegboard on the side is my framed and portable craft tool pegboard ( tutorial here ).

The last thing to show you is my latest project, a craft command center! It’s made from old shutters and a whiteboard, and it can store notes and papers. Here it is with the shutters closed:

Yan Jun will recreate his Living Room Tour project, initiated in 2011,the project was developed as a solo project and later with guests to become the Impro Committe collaboration project (2014, Beijing).

Yan Jun will recreate his Living Room Tour project, initiated in 2011,the project was developed as a solo project and later with guests to become the Impro Committe collaboration project (2014, Beijing). The Living Room Tour project has to takes place at someone’s home, a place while he/she lives. whatever the size is, with or without speakers, has or has no electricity; at least one audience is required and the owner of the home is encouraged to invite audiences. The performers may use furniture, kitchenware or anything available. The initial idea of this project came from feeling tired about low-end speakers and wanting to create a sonic space without the expense or formalities which go with this. He says the concert is a temporary mandala, a metaphor for the world. Within this environment is a destabilisation of hierarchy and there is no difference between large and small or professional and amateur. The quality of listening is from participants’s devotion.

Yan Jun is a musician, born in Lanzhou in 1973 and based in Beijing. His activities involve improvised music, field recordings and site-specific sound works/events. His feedback improvisation set always follows the unstable relationship between microphones, speakers, the space and his own body movement. He often plays with the environment and found objects at audiences‚ homes, along or with other artists, through the Living Room Tour project. He is member of FEN, Tea Rockers Quintet and Impro Committee . He has performed in more than 20 countries in North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. As a poet and artist he has attended Rotterdam International Poetry Festival, Berlin International Poetry Festival and Shanghai Biennale.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. ‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
