Here is a description of the tools available in the expression entry module.

  • Basic:  This tab includes basic functions and common symbols. On a desktop, you may also use keyboard shortcuts to enter numbers and symbols directly from your physical keyboard. A complete list of shortcuts is found on the Help  tab .
  • Dynamic section : This section contains the most common buttons that may be useful to enter the type of the answer expected. The buttons here vary based on the type of answer expected. This section also may not appear at all. Skip to Examples of dynamic sections .
  • Basic functions : This section includes many of the basic functions you may need such as fractions, exponents, roots, factorials, absolute value, and logarithms. 
  • Common symbols : Use these buttons to enter x, t, šœ‹, y, šœƒ, ā€˜ (prime),  Ā° (degrees ) , āˆž, NO SOL (NO SOLUTION), UNDEF (UNDEFINED), or DNE (DOES NOT EXIST) .
  • DEL : Click this button to delete the term that's immediately to the left of the cursor (same function as keyboard backspace button on PC).
  • CLEAR : Use this button to delete everything in entry box.
  • Collapse : You can collapse the palette from view, which is similar to minimizing a browser window. The palette will move to the bottom of your Assessment and only show the top toolbar. Once the palette is collapsed, click the expand button in the same location to bring it back to full size.

The relative frequency shows the proportion of data points that have each value. The frequency tells the number of data points that have each value.

Answers will vary. One possible histogram is shown below.

Find the midpoint for each class. These will be graphed on the x -axis. The frequency values will be graphed on the y -axis values.

  • The 40 th percentile is 37 years.
  • The 78 th percentile is 70 years.

Jesse graduated 37 th out of a class of 180 students. There are 180 ā€“ 37 = 143 students ranked below Jesse. There is one rank of 37.

  • For runners in a race, it is more desirable to have a high percentile for speed. A high percentile means a higher speed, which is faster.
  • 40 percent of runners ran at speeds of 7.5 miles per hour or less (slower), and 60 percent of runners ran at speeds of 7.5 miles per hour or more (faster).

When waiting in line at the DMV, the 85 th percentile would be a long wait time compared to the other people waiting. 85 percent of people had shorter wait times than Mina. In this context, Mina would prefer a wait time corresponding to a lower percentile. 85 percent of people at the DMV waited 32 minutes or less. 15 percent of people at the DMV waited 32 minutes or longer.

The manufacturer and the consumer would be upset. This is a large repair cost for the damages, compared to the other cars in the sample. INTERPRETATION: 90 percent of the crash-tested cars had damage repair costs of $1,700 or less; only 10 percent had damage repair costs of $1,700 or more.

You can afford 34 percent of houses. 66 percent of the houses are too expensive for your budget. INTERPRETATION: 34 percent of houses cost $240,000 or less; 66 percent of houses cost $240,000 or more.

More than 25 percent of salespersons sell four cars in a typical week. You can see this concentration in the box plot because the first quartile is equal to the median. The top 25 percent and the bottom 25 percent are spread out evenly; the whiskers have the same length.

The data are symmetrical. The median is 3, and the mean is 2.85. They are close, and the mode lies close to the middle of the data, so the data are symmetrical.

The data are skewed right. The median is 87.5, and the mean is 88.2. Even though they are close, the mode lies to the left of the middle of the data, and there are many more instances of 87 than any other number, so the data are skewed right.

When the data are symmetrical, the mean and median are close or the same.

The distribution is skewed right because it looks pulled out to the right.

The mean is 4.1 and is slightly greater than the median, which is 4.

The mode and the median are the same. In this case, both 5.

The distribution is skewed left because it looks pulled out to the left.

Both the mean and the median are 6.

The mode is 12, the median is 13.5, and the mean is 15.1. The mean is the largest.

The mean tends to reflect skewing the most because it is affected the most by outliers.

Daren Starnes

Daren Starnes has taught a variety of statistics courses ā€” including Introductory Statistics, APĀ® Statistics, and Mathematical Statistics ā€” for 25 years. He earned his MA in mathematics from the University of Michigan and his BS in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Daren has been a Reader, Table Leader, and Question Leader for the APĀ® Statistics exam for over 20 years. As a College Board consultant since 1999, Daren has led hundreds of workshops for APĀ® Statistics teachers throughout the United States and overseas. He frequently presents in-person and online sessions about statistics teaching and learning for high school and college faculty. Daren is an active member of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), and the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE). He served on the ASA/NCTM Joint Committee on the Curriculum in Statistics and Probability for six years. While on the committee, he edited the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report: A Pre-Kā€“12 Curriculum Framework report. He is a past member of the APĀ® Statistics Development Committee (2005ā€“2009), as well as an experienced Table Leader, Question Leader, and Exam Leader at the APĀ® Statistics Reading. In 2013, Josh was named to the SATĀ® Mathematics Development Committee. Josh is a member of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and was a reviewer for the ASAā€™s Pre-Kā€“12 Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education II (GAISE II). Each year, Josh leads many workshops and frequently speaks at local, national, and international conferences. In addition to teaching and speaking, he has authored articles in The American Statistician, The Mathematics Teacher, STATS Magazine, and The Journal of Statistics Education. Josh is coauthor of The Practice of Statistics (now in its seventh edition), the best-selling textbook for APĀ® Statistics, and of Statistics and Probability with Applications (now in its fourth edition), a popular choice for high school introductory statistics. Combining his love of statistics and sports, Josh teamed with Christine Franklin to write Statistical Reasoning in Sports, an innovative textbook for statistical literacy courses. Outside of work, Josh enjoys gardening, traveling, and playing board games with his family.

Luke Wilcox is a National Board Certified teacher who has spent his 20-year teaching career at East Kentwood High School, the most diverse public high school in the state of Michigan. To further help statistics teachers, Luke co-developed the website statsmedic.com, which is positively transforming statistics instruction in classrooms around the country. Luke leads his students with an Experience First, Formalize Later approach to teaching statisticsā€”in which students engage in the mathematical thinking and reasoning before being provided algorithmic formulas and definitions. In his spare time, Luke enjoys traveling with his wife and two kids, running, and eating tacos.
