10 skills every manager should have

Managing companies and employees effectively takes a specific skill set. To build your managerial expertise, consider attaining these skills:

1. Ability to delegate

As a manager, the ability to delegate can offer you a variety of benefits. First, sharing tasks with others saves you time at work and reduces your stress levels. Delegating also engages and empowers your employees, helps build their skill sets, and boosts productivity in the workplace.

2. Ability to inspire and motivate

Employees depend on managers for support and guidance. By providing goals and objectives and a clear vision for how to meet them, you can keep employees motivated to perform their best. Other ways to inspire and motivate employees include finding ways to make work more engaging and rewarding and providing positive and helpful feedback.

3. Conflict-management

Workplaces typically have occasional conflicts, so knowing how to navigate them makes managing easier. This skill involves identifying the cause or causes of conflicts and coming up with quick and effective remedies.

4. Decision-making

Decision-making involves identifying an issue, weighing options, and taking action. The ability to make decisions can save time, boost productivity, build trust, and reduce confusion in the workplace.

5. Effective communication

Being a manager involves interacting with people regularly. On any given day, you might run a staff meeting, make a presentation to board members, or resolve a conflict between two employees. In addition to conveying information, listening when communicating is essential. Practicing good listening helps you be present, maintain eye contact, and paraphrase what your speaker says.

6. Emotional intelligence

If you can manage your emotions and help manage the emotions of others, chances are you have emotional intelligence. Emotionally intelligent managers often have empathy for others, a sense of self-awareness, an ability to think before speaking or acting, and a high degree of resilience.

7. Flexibility

Roadblocks pop up in any workplace, and good managers know how to get around them. Flexibility involves finding multiple ways to manage a team, complete a task, or solve a problem.

8. Organization

As a manager, you may have much to handle at once, including tasks, reports, meetings, projects, and presentations. Good organizational skills can help. These include goal setting, scheduling, time management, and recordkeeping.

9. Problem-solving

Problem-solving goes hand-in-hand with decision-making. The process involves identifying a problem, weighing solutions, choosing the best one, and evaluating whether or not it works. Managers who are good problem solvers have an easier time meeting company goals and objectives.

10. Strategic thinking

Managers who can strategically think offer great value to companies. Strategic thinking involves the following:

Analyzing data to come up with strategies

Creating strategies for meeting company goals and objectives

Thinking of ways to implement strategies

Directing others in the completion of goal-related tasks

Communicating the results to company stakeholders

Ways to develop managerial skills

Gaining new skills or improving the ones you have can help you be more successful in a management position. Whether you're a current manager or hoping to become one, consider these tips for developing management skills:

Seek advice and guidance from a mentor.

Read books about management theories, techniques, and styles.

Think about areas you need to improve, set goals, and take steps to achieve them.

Go back to school and get a certificate or a degree.

Attend industry-related training, conferences, and workshops.

Practice skills like active listening, delegating, and organization.

Join a public speaking group or take a public speaking or business writing class.

Look for opportunities to be a leader at work, home, class, or through volunteering or sports.

Develop people management skills.

You’ll ideally concentrate on developing specific people management skills. By focusing on specific competencies, you can build higher competency levels in each area compared to a general competency approach.  Enrolling in professional development courses is a great way to learn new management techniques and improve your existing skills.

You might also want to find a mentor or business coach to guide you on competency gaps and how to refine them. Asking other managers for feedback or advice is another great way to learn more about yourself—and what you need to do to improve as a manager.

What is a project manager? Responsibilities and best practices explained

Browse topics.

A project manager, or PM, coordinates the elements of a project, aiming for timely completion within budget and with high standards. They're the central figure connecting project goals with the collective efforts of their team and help navigate obstacles to guide projects to their goals.

This guide explores the role of PMs, highlighting their critical responsibilities, key skills, and best strategies. It also examines how platforms like Confluence can help PMs enhance team collaboration and communication across the project life cycle .

What is a project manager?

A PM is a leader who guides projects from the drawing board to the finish line. They make sure everything runs smoothly and stays on schedule. They gather necessary resources, unite team members, and work on continuous improvement .

PMs connect the day-to-day work with the bigger picture. They support the broader objectives of the company and satisfy stakeholder needs.

Project manager responsibilities

PMs juggle a variety of core responsibilities to lead a project through hurdles and changes. Mastery in each of these areas contributes to a smoother experience from the perspective of both team members and stakeholders:

  • Project planning : PMs initiate the planning process, clearly defining the project's scope, goals, and objectives. They develop detailed plans outlining tasks, resources, timelines, and deliverables, creating a solid foundation for project execution.
  • Team coordination : Project managers assemble and direct project teams, assigning tasks based on members' skills and experience. PMs focus and unify team efforts by promoting collaboration, resolving conflicts, and leading effective team meetings .
  • Risk management : PMs identify potential risks early, analyze their possible impact, and develop mitigation strategies. This proactive approach minimizes disruptions to the project’s schedule, quality, and budget.
  • Budget oversight : PMs estimate costs, establish budgets, track spending, and adjust as necessary to keep the project within financial boundaries while achieving fiscal efficiency.
  • Client communication : They maintain open and transparent communication with clients and stakeholders. PMs provide updates, respond to inquiries, and use feedback to adapt project scope to meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Maintaining quality standards : PMs implement quality control processes to ensure deliverables meet agreed-upon standards and satisfy client requirements. This helps maintain project integrity.

Project manager skills

The success of any project depends heavily on the unique blend of soft and hard skills possessed by the PM. Here are some of the critical soft skills that PMs need to excel in their role:

  • Communication : PMs must master verbal and written communication to convey project objectives, updates, and feedback to all stakeholders. This fosters alignment and collaboration throughout the project life cycle.
  • Adaptability : PMs need to respond to project shifts and unforeseen challenges with flexibility. They must be able to adjust strategies and plans to keep projects moving forward.
  • Problem-solving : PMs must approach issues decisively. They use critical thinking to analyze problems, devise solutions, and apply them effectively. This minimizes the impact on project progress and outcomes.
  • Leadership : PMs provide team leadership to inspire and motivate. They guide team members, support their development, and cultivate a collaborative environment.
  • Organizational skills : Exceptional organizational abilities allow PMs to balance multiple tasks and priorities. They skillfully map out schedules, allocate resources, and monitor project timelines to guide their team toward success.

Best practices for project managers

Great PMs commit to applying best practices consistently across projects. They understand that good project management comes from a blend of skill, strategy, and continuous refinement. Here are some key best practices:

Prioritize clear communication

Clear communication keeps everyone moving in the same direction and places transparency and efficiency at the heart of the team's workflow . Encouraging open exchanges of ideas, progress updates, and concerns helps the team tackle obstacles head-on and propels the project forward.

Create effective project plans

Well-structured project plans contain the following key elements:

  • Scope : Define the project scope clearly. This helps prevent scope creep and ensures everyone understands the project boundaries.
  • Goals and objectives : Establish what the project aims to achieve. Objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
  • Milestones and timeline : Identify crucial milestones and create a timeline that outlines when each project phase should be completed.
  • Resources : Detail necessary resources (people, budget, technology) and allocate them effectively. This includes identifying roles and responsibilities.
  • Risk management : Anticipate potential risks and strategize how to address them. This fosters a proactive approach to uncertainty management.
  • Communication plan: Outline how you will handle communication within the project team and with stakeholders. This includes frequency, methods, and key points.

Use project management tools

Using specialized project management software empowers PMs to excel in their roles.

Project manager software is a centralized hub for everything project-related, including plans, tasks, and resources. This simplifies outlining projects, distributing tasks, and tracking deadlines. Everyone stays in the loop, reducing mix-ups and enhancing teamwork .

Project management software also improves how teams communicate. Tools facilitate smoother updates, collaborative problem-solving, and efficient coordination. This includes commenting, file sharing, and simultaneous editing.

Confluence is the premier project management solution for PMs seeking to overcome the common PgM challenge of fragmented communication and scattered data and documents. The platform serves as a central repository for all project-related documents and knowledge. Information is readily accessible to anyone who needs it, allowing PMs more time to focus on strategic tasks.

Empower your team

An inspired and empowered team not only boosts productivity but also becomes a driving force behind project success. Effective PMs cultivate a positive work environment through various team management strategies , such as:

  • Ensure each team member knows their role, expectations, and how their work contributes to the project's success.
  • Give team members the freedom to make decisions about their work. This builds trust and encourages innovation.
  • Provide opportunities for team members to develop their skills and grow professionally. This can include training, workshops, or taking on new challenges within the project.
  • Regularly acknowledge and celebrate achievements, both individually and as a team.
  • Create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and feedback.

Project manager: Frequently asked questions

What does a project manager do on a daily basis.

PMs juggle various tasks daily, including monitoring project progress, talking things through with stakeholders, tackling issues that arise, and tweaking plans to keep everything on track with the project's goals.

What are project management methodologies?

Project management methodologies act as blueprints for navigating a project's life cycle. Agile and Scrum are great for fast-paced, iterative projects. Waterfall and Lean work better for projects with a defined sequence or a focus on minimizing waste.

Why is a project manager important?

A project manager is vital because they act as the bridge between a project's plan and its execution. A PM's core role is to ensure that projects meet deadlines, stay within budget, and adhere to quality standards. Their expertise in managing timelines and resources prevents miscommunication and scope creep.

What is the difference between a program manager and a project manager?

A program manager oversees a group of related projects, focusing on long-term objectives and the overall impact on the company's goals. A project manager is responsible for the daily operations of a single project. They concentrate on meeting specific deadlines, budgets, and scope.

After all, these tools have been proven to seriously improve productivity when it comes to a wide range of tasks performed in the workplace.

Which Jobs Is AI Replacing?

Our research into the Impact of Technology on the Workplace solicited a lot of information, not the least important of which was the kinds of jobs and tasks that are being replaced by AI.

Given the generative nature of AI platforms on the market today, some jobs seem riper for replacement than others. However, our research actually found the opposite, with writing (63%), design (51%), and language translation (50%) representing the tasks where AI tools have no impact on removing job roles.

However, other roles were not so lucky. Supply chain optimization , for example, was the most likely to be replaced by AI, with 72% of businesses admitting that had removed at least some jobs to perform the task. Other roles at the bottom of the list include legal research (65%), financial analysis (64%), and predictive maintenance on fixed assets (65%) .

As for why, the report had some notable insights around the reasoning for job roles being replaced by AI:

“This is likely nothing more than a bottom-line decision, with these time-consuming, complex data-processing roles costing a lot of money to fill with well-trained professionals. Subsequently, being able to replace them with an automated system will save the company the most money, which is why they’re willing to risk forgoing a full-time employee to make it happen.” – Jennifer McIlveen, managing editor of Tech.co

As is often the case, the decisions on which roles are replaced by AI is largely driven by money. Subsequently, understanding how widespread AI job replacement can help you plan for the future.

How Widespread Are AI Job Replacements?

Artificial intelligence (AI) and the many platforms that have arisen from its advancement over the last few years are providing businesses with the tools to tackle big problems. In many cases, these services are streamlining and even automating roles, which means that some jobs are being replaced.

But how widespread is this change? Our research found that AI isn't influencing job replacement nearly as much as you'd think, with only 4% of businesses saying that AI has had an extensive impact on replacing job roles. Even better, a whopping 53% of businesses surveyed noted that AI has had no impact on removing job roles.

“The problem isn’t dire just yet. Obviously, technology and AI have begun having an effect on job roles, but for the majority of professionals, there’s plenty of time before the need to sound any alarms.” – Jennifer McIlveen, managing editor of Tech.co

Simply put, if you're worried about your job being replaced by AI, you probably have some time before you need to start updating your resume, particularly because the AI platforms on the market now are far from perfect.

What Is Keeping AI Job Replacement Low?

Considering AI platforms have become so popular and productivity over such a short period of time, it might be hard to understand exactly why job replacement isn't higher. Don't get us wrong, we're happy to global economy isn't crumbling due to this new technology, but what is keeping AI job replacement so low?

Well, according to our research, trust in AI isn't very high right now, particularly when it comes to providing false information. In fact, 49% of businesses surveyed said that they were concerned about the risk of large language AI models generating false information.

Subsequently, most businesses don't feel comfortable turning over their entire operation to an AI that makes mistakes , which means that there are still plenty of jobs and skills that won't be replaced in the near future.

AI False Information Graph

Which Job Skills Are Still Valued?

While some roles and tasks are eliminated by AI, there are still some valuable skills that recruiters, business owners, and managers are looking for when it comes to new employees, and they are some of the most human skills you can imagine.

“Those still worried about AI taking their job, or worse, preventing them from finding a new one, will likely be reassured by Tech.co’s findings on what hiring managers consider to be the most valuable skills in a new employee.” – Jennifer McIlveen, managing editor of Tech.co

Communication, problem solving, and time management , for instance, were at the top of the list, with 98% of respondents noting these skills as at least moderately important when it comes to hiring. People management (91%) and networking (90%) were also quite notable in regard to these kinds of valuable skills.

Perhaps more importantly, the value of AI skills in the workplace hasn't taken off yet either. In fact, only 43% of respondents said that AI expertise was at least moderately important to the hiring decision, the lowest score across our research.

Best free task management software

ClickUp

What you should know

ClickUp is an all-in-one solution for organizing your tasks, teams and projects. We chose ClickUp as the best task management software because it allows unlimited users and tasks and automates recurring assignments. The home screen is an impressive feature, as it centralizes all assigned comments and allows you to add new tasks with the drag-and-drop tool.

Although ClickUp doesn’t restrict the usage of checklists or dependencies, once users use a certain number of goals or milestones, this feature is blocked until the plan is upgraded. Unlike Trello, you can’t connect ClickUp’s free version to Google Drive or Dropbox. It’s also a bit more challenging for beginners than a straightforward platform.

Pros and cons

  • Unlimited tasks and members on the free version.
  • Provides task checklists and dependencies.
  • Home feature shows your daily agenda and tasks.
  • The free plan is only good for sole proprietorships.
  • Usage limits don’t reset.
  • More complex to configure than Trello.

Best for remote team task management

Monday.com

Business managers leverage Monday.com’s intuitive work management platform to assign tasks and oversee progress. It supports diverse workforces with highly rated mobile apps, pre-made templates and drag-and-drop functionality. It is easy to customize the task manager board to display due dates and handle multiple departments. Consequently, we chose Monday.com as the best task management software for managing remote teams due to its automations, integrations and updates section that keeps employees informed.

While finding a downside to Monday.com is challenging, the free and Basic versions are disappointing. Both lack integrations and calendar views, which Trello provides. Companies with more complex tasks may prefer Asana because it supports dependencies on the less expensive Premium plan ($13.49 monthly versus Monday.com’s $20).

  • Daily task manager dashboards and views.
  • Drag-and-drop tools are user-friendly.
  • Updates section shows recent comments or changes.
  • Limited views on the Basic plan.
  • The free version isn’t for teams.
  • Only Pro and Enterprise users can set dependencies.

Most customizable task-tracking tool

Airtable

Airtable is a unique cloud-based platform companies use to build custom no-code apps. Unlike other task-tracking tools, you can start from scratch or choose a base published by Airtable users. As our top pick as the most customizable task management software, Airtable stands out for its automation capabilities, sub-task options and multiple views (up to 1,000 per table).

While the free version allows unlimited bases, only five people can edit it. Paid subscriptions are pricier than competitors, making Airtable less budget-friendly than other solutions. It also offers fewer customer support options and may take a bit longer to set up compared to Asana or Monday.com.

  • Many base templates created by Airbase users.
  • Highly customizable for various workflows.
  • Can track sub-tasks and automate notifications.
  • More expensive than other task management apps.
  • No phone support available.
  • Not an out-of-box task-tracking tool.

Best for content creators

Notion

Notion is a block-based project and task management app. Users add a to-do list to every page or insert one list block per project. We selected Notion as the best task management software for content creators because it has over 50 content blocks, supports guest collaborators (like freelancers or clients) and allows custom dashboards. Creators can sort design tasks by category or client and customize fields by due date or team member.

However, Notion’s free version is more limited than ClickUp’s complimentary plan. It’s best for a single content creator. While Notion offers several task management templates, it requires a bit more configuration than Trello. Notion has various templates for tracking hours but lacks the built-in billable hours feature, making Teamwork perfect for virtual assistants.

  • Customizable task management dashboards.
  • Built-in text editor.
  • 10 to 250 guest collaborators.
  • No built-in or automated client billing tools.
  • The free task management app is only for sole proprietorships.
  • Slight learning curve for new users.

Best for client task management

Teamwork

Teamwork’s task-tracking tools help virtual assistants and agencies handle workloads for one or more customers. We named Teamwork the best task management software for client task management because it allows users to establish task lists, get immediate progress updates and view dependencies. Aside from all the basics, like setting due dates and assigning work, Teamwork lets businesses track billable hours, improve time estimates and chat with co-workers or contractors.

However, Teamwork doesn’t provide much storage space compared to competitors. The 50 GB and 100 GB limits on Starter and Deliver plans pale in comparison to Notion and Asana ’s unlimited offerings. Moreover, we wish Teamwork included additional reports and the tasklist budgets feature on lower-priced packages.

  • Plans include billable time tracking.
  • Integrated team chat.
  • Unlimited tasklist templates.
  • Limited reports on most subscriptions.
  • Tasklist budgets only available on top-tier plans.
  • Less cloud storage than Notion or Asana.

Best for SMBs managing complex tasks

Asana

Asana’s collaborative work management system enables small and medium-sized business (SMB) leaders to break down high-level tasks into manageable parts for individuals and departments. The my tasks view lets employees visualize assignments, priorities and changes in real time. The automation features make Asana the best task management software for SMBs managing complex tasks. Teams can create tasks from a meeting, email or Slack message, share status updates to third-party tools or change task dates in team calendars.

Although leaders can assign many collaborators to a task, only one person is the “assignee” and can view the task under “My tasks.” This could pose an issue for projects with two or more responsible parties. Asana locks time-tracking tools behind the more expensive Business tier, whereas Teamwork includes built-in features on the free version. However, you can integrate third-party apps with Asana with all subscriptions.

  • Paid plans show task dependencies.
  • Automates actions across third-party tools.
  • Unlimited file storage.
  • More expensive than Teamwork for time tracking tools.
  • Only one assignee per task.
  • 24/7 support limited to Enterprise users.

Best for reporting to senior leaders

Smartsheet

Smartsheet takes the familiar spreadsheet for tracking tasks to a new level. Users can create custom dashboards and reports to find at-risk, due or not yet assigned tasks. Or quickly generate reports to see all tasks assigned to specific employees. It supports sharing permissions so companies can send task lists to internal and external stakeholders. Smartsheet is the best task management software for reporting to senior leaders because it provides real-time metrics and high-level data for keeping executives informed.

While senior leaders may appreciate the progress summaries, everyday users may be less enthused. Smartsheets can be trickier to navigate than Asana or Monday.com. The Pro plan maxes out at 10 users, and Business costs $32 per user monthly. Companies that require skills-based resource management or digital asset tools could pay even higher prices.

  • Automated recurring reminders and alerts.
  • Task scheduling and task list sharing.
  • Real-time metrics and reporting options.
  • Steeper learning curve for new users.
  • Some functions or features may require add-ons.
  • Pro plan is limited to 10 users.

Best for light task management

Confluence, an Atlassian product, is a team collaboration workspace that integrates with Jira. Companies use Confluence to develop knowledge bases for high-stakes projects. Users can add tasks to a requirements or meetings notes page. Putting action items anywhere is possible, making Confluence the best task management software for flexible light task management. We like tagging tasks with due dates and seeing a task list in our profile.

Yet, Confluence lacks the deeper task management features of other solutions like ClickUp and Monday.com . It doesn’t monitor milestones or offer billable time tracking. Also, companies that don’t use Confluence or Jira for current projects will find the software less helpful in tracking tasks.

  • Coordinates with Jira.
  • Tasks report blueprint shows team or project-specific tasks.
  • Multiple ways to view tasks.
  • Not for managing task scope and milestones.
  • Lacks billable time tracking.
  • Not a standalone time-tracking solution.

Best for large software development teams

Jira

Jira, an Atlassian product, is an agile project and task management system designed to mirror your company’s workflows, whatever those may be. This customizable solution gives powerful insights into task histories, status and workflows. Jira is our top pick as the best task management software for large development teams, thanks to its expansive integrations and drag-and-drop automations. We appreciate the interactive timelines and ability to create custom fields.

Companies that require advanced planning tools, like mapping dependencies or managing team capacity, must select the Premium or Enterprise plans. These subscriptions also provide unlimited file storage, whereas the other plans are limited (2 GB to 250 GB). While Jira helps large software development teams manage tasks, it can be overkill for smaller creative teams or service-based agencies.

  • Supports multiple assignees and custom fields.
  • Drag-and-drop automation.
  • Integrates with thousands of third-party apps.
  • Advanced planning tools only available for Premium and Enterprise users.
  • Limited file storage on the Free and Standard plan.
  • More complex interface than Monday.com.

Best for branding and marketing startups

Trello

Trello is a visual task management tool from Atlassian. Unlike Jira or Confluence, Trello is widely known for its user-friendly interface. Add a task and due date to a card, assign it to a team member and drag it to a column. Break large tasks into bite-size chunks by adding a checklist to a card and alert co-workers when the assignment is ready. Trello is the best task management software for brand and marketing startups because it’s free (or inexpensive) and simple to use.

However, as your agency grows, managing large projects is challenging on Trello. It doesn’t show dependencies and falls behind competitors in reporting options. You’ll need to upgrade for timeline and dashboard views.

  • Many task management templates.
  • Unlimited power-ups and file storage.
  • Easy to add task checklists to individual cards.
  • Lacks robust reporting tools.
  • Not for managing complex tasks or projects.
  • Limited views on Standard and free plans.

Best task management software comparison

Methodology

We extensively research the key competitors within an industry to determine the best products and services for your business. Our experts identify the factors that matter most to business owners, including pricing, features and customer support, to ensure that our recommendations offer well-rounded products that will meet the needs of various small businesses.

We collect extensive data to narrow our best list to reputable, easy-to-use products with stand-out features at a reasonable price point. And we look at user reviews to ensure that business owners like you are satisfied with our top picks’ services. We use the same rubric to assess companies within a particular space so you can confidently follow our blueprint to the best task management software.

The best task management software has positive user reviews on customer review sites and app stores. Task management software companies should provide customers with fast and reliable support. Using a combination of phone support, live chat and knowledge bases, customers should be able to quickly resolve issues 24/7.

Task management software should have role assignment features, timelines and dependencies. It should also allow businesses to use customizable templates, track expenses and track milestones.

And the best task management software should offer client access, billing and invoice capabilities and budgeting features.

What is task management software and how does it work?

Task management software helps individuals and companies track job or project-related assignments from a central location. Most task-tracking apps or to-do list tools let users create sub-tasks, establish due dates and monitor task progress.

These cloud-based tools typically offer mobile apps, allowing users to view tasks from iOS and Android phones, and any changes made on the mobile app update automatically when viewed on the desktop version.

Task management apps have different formats and functionality for creating to-do lists and managing tasks, but many systems work like this:

  • A team leader or individual makes a standalone task or turns a comment, meeting action item or Slack message into a task.
  • They assign themselves or one or more co-workers the task.
  • Depending on the software, the user may add a due date, priority level, description and other details in custom fields.
  • The assignees may receive an alert and new tasks or status updates appear on their main profile or dashboard.
  • Leaders can run reports, automate status notifications or view progress on dashboards.
  • Task management tools may have in-app messaging or chat features, support file attachments or let users complete the project within the software.

How to choose the best task management software for your business

Workflows and task assignments vary by company, and the best task management software should fit your process and require minimal process changes by your team. Follow these steps to identify the right system for your organization.

1. Determine your budget and goals

Task management and to-do list apps charge a per-user fee. Many offer free versions, which could work for freelancers, solopreneurs, small teams or startups. However, free task-tracking tools often have usage limits or lack automation and other advanced features.

If your funds are tight, consider starting with free task management apps or free project management software to stretch your budget and see which team members benefit the most from the software.

Companies choose online task managers to improve accountability and reduce missed deadlines. Yet, a virtual assistant needs a tool that tracks billable client hours, whereas a manager might want a powerful real-time dashboard for managing a remote workforce. Likewise, a software development company’s goals differ from those of a branding and marketing startup.

2. Consult with your team for a feature wishlist

Involve team leaders and employees in the early stages. Features desired by an office or remote worker may differ from those required by leaders or business owners. Therefore, it’s crucial to hear from people in various roles.

Consider the following task management features:

  • Task and sub-task creation, scheduling and assignment.
  • Ability to assign tasks to multiple people.
  • Recurring tasks.
  • Different task views (calendar, list, dashboard or Gantt).
  • Priority levels.
  • Collaboration tools, like in-app messaging or chat.
  • Time tracking, billable hours or timesheets.
  • Progress updates, reports and status monitoring.
  • Automation capabilities.

3. Identify top-rated task management apps

Read guides rating the top task and project management systems to understand your options. Then, check out mobile apps and user reviews to see how business users rate their experience.

Look for details about ease of use and customer support wait times. Head to each vendor’s pricing page to see if your must-have features are within your budget. Lastly, use your criteria and insights to narrow your list to a handful of task management tools.

4. Test software and request feedback

The best apps for task management provide free trials or versions, allowing businesses to test them before committing. Encourage your team and leaders in different positions to assign tasks and run reports.

Ask these questions:

  • Could you assign, track and manage tasks on the mobile apps?
  • How would you rate the setup and learning process?
  • Did features work as expected?
  • Were task priorities clear?
  • How easy was it to switch between views or task lists?
  • Did the format or visual structure make sense to you?
  • What customizations do you think are essential?

How much does task management software cost?

* Monday.com requires a three-user minimum. ** Teamwork has a three-user minimum for Starter and Deliver and a five-user minimum for Grow.  ***Smartsheet Business requires a minimum of three users. ****Trello Enterprise is billed annually.

Task management software ranges from $6 to $24 per user monthly for base plans. Most vendors provide discounts for annual prepayment, reducing the cost of entry-tier subscriptions by $1 to $4 monthly. At the high end, prices range from $11.55 to $54.00 per user monthly, and annual prepayment decreases monthly costs by $2.50 to $9.00. Several services have enterprise packages with custom pricing available.

Eight out of 10 task management apps have a free trial. Teamwork, Asana and Smartsheet give companies 30 days to test paid versions, which is a fantastic deal. However, all vendors offer a free version of their task management tools. Yet, only two users can access Monday.com’s free plan, whereas Trello says you can invite your whole team.

Why this Ethiopian navy officer ended up as a metro driver

task manager job

'I've seen everything there is to see overground'

task manager job

Tall, smiling Worku Bedasso is a bit of a legendary figure at the Moscow Metro. When asked how he ended up working here, he says noncommittally: "It just happened!"

In Soviet times, the young lieutenant of the Ethiopian Navy came here to study on an exchange program: first in Georgia in 1985, and a couple of years later in Azerbaijan. While Worku was learning how to build socialism, a civil war broke out in his native Ethiopia, and “old-school” officers were no longer needed by the new state. His wife and children remained in Ethiopia; they did not want to go to Russia. A few weeks later, the Soviet Union collapsed and foreign students based in Baku were sent to Moscow.

In Moscow, he was granted refugee status and issued with a work permit; however, during the 1998 economic crisis it was hard to find work. Then, his new Russian girlfriend, Olga, suggested he try working at a metro depot, since he was good with machinery. After six months of training, the former officer became a metro driver assistant.

“The first time felt strange and even scary,” Worku recalls. “But a military background helps. A metro driver needs to have stress tolerance, army discipline and a desire to work hard.”

While on the job, Worku enrolled at the Railways Institute (MIIT) to get a degree in engineering. However, it turned out that combining work and studies was too difficult and in 1999, he decided to quit the job...

By 2010, when he had decided to return to the Moscow Metro, Worku had been working for a logistics company in Moscow and Sochi, had married Olga and received a Russian passport. He once again had to make the journey from a driver assistant to a Category 1 driver, and looking back on it today, he is quite happy with his life: “It's fun to drive a train and get good money for it.” Furthermore, in all his years of working, he has never had any accidents: he attributes it to good luck.

That said, at the age of 62, he has started to think of ending his career as a driver and move to a job at a metro depot. “When you are young, you don’t feel the workload, but at my age it’s getting a bit hard! I don’t want to part with the metro. I have seen everything there is to see overground.”

Anton Khlynin studied Russian language and literature at Moscow State University and even spent a year and a half as a PhD student. But at some point, he realized it was time to stop. Anton seems a very serious man until he turns with his back to you and you see a biker's braid popping out from under the collar of his uniform.

“At university, I had a research topic that I thought was very interesting - the perception of Dostoevsky’s works in Scandinavian countries,” - says Anton. “He is the main writer there. I took it up with great fervor, but as I was writing my thesis, I found out that this subject had already been thoroughly researched by another academic. I was extremely disappointed.”

Academia no longer appeals to Anton, although he is still interested in literature: he even writes himself, albeit articles about railways. In 2007, he decided to fulfill his childhood dream and go work as an engine driver.

“I have been a fan of railways since the age of five. My first memory is seeing a locomotive on the tracks.”

Anton is now 40 and he recently qualified as a 2nd grade driver, by coming in the top three places in a professional competition. Unlike his colleague, Worku, Anton has seen many emergency situations in his career.

“Once, a passenger fell on the tracks at Park Pobedy [station] (dark blue line), but I managed to hit the breaks in time. Also, there are diggers who are just looking for adventure,” says Anton.  “When I was a kid, I was a member of a railway modeling club, and then of a literary society. I had things to do. Whereas they, it seems, have nothing to do!"

Yet, despite everything, Anton insists he does not regret having changed his career so drastically, even though he admits seeing trains in his dreams, too. “I used to occasionally dream I was running a red light, or that my train was derailing. But now all that is gone and I sleep normally!”

When asked whether knowledge of literature helps him in his work, Anton replies philosophically: “My general level of education helps me in my life. And work is part of life.”

'I drive 2,000 people during rush hour!'

When you look at tall, youthful Vadim Kalugin, it is hard to believe that he is one of the oldest drivers on the Moscow Metro, a veteran of labor. Vadim is 55 years old, and he has spent most of his life underground. Now he is a 1st grade driver. He joined the Moscow Metro straight after returning from military service, on advice from his mother-in-law.

“She herself worked in the aircraft industry and knew what responsible work meant. And she liked the uniform that metro drivers had,” Vadim recalls. “By the way, we are sometimes called ‘underground pilots’. But a pilot carries 300 people on a plane, while I drive more than 2,000 people during rush hour! I think our job involves even more responsibility.”

According to Vadim, the Moscow Metro is not only the most beautiful, but also the most reliable. “Even in the 1990s, during the economic crisis, when many people did not receive their wages, metro drivers were always paid on time and metro trains were on schedule. After all, if the metro stops, the whole of Moscow will stop.”

Vadim says that the main thing in his work is to strictly follow the instructions. “In the metro, everything happens at lightning speed! The driver has no right to make a mistake. In my 34 years of work, I have never had a single reprimand,” he says, adding that, sadly, he is still going to retire next year.

Fired Moscow Metro Boss Gets Job at Railways

task manager job

Ivan Besedin, who headed Moscow's subway system until he was fired in the aftermath of a deadly crash last year, will now work at the country's national railroad monopoly, Russian Railways said Wednesday.

Besedin will be in charge of a logistics and transportation department at Russian Railways and is tasked with "improving the economic efficiency of transportation," the statement said.

He had earlier headed the Kaliningrad branch of Russian Railways before heading the Moscow Metropolitan company.

Besedin was reportedly on vacation during the deadliest accident in the subway system's 80-year history, a derailment last year that killed 23 people and injured more than 160 others. He was subsequently dismissed by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

Russian Railways runs the second-largest railway network in the world, transporting almost a billion passengers and 1.2 billion tons of freight across Russia annually, according to its website.

The Moscow subway's current boss, Dmitry Pegov, who replaced Besedin, is a former director of Russian Railways' high-speed service department.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
